in this high inflation environment,’’ Mr ‘‘Cash means we can buy exactly what is
Gordon said.
needed as stocks run low, be it fresh
‘‘I was astonished by the generosity of produce, pantry staples or essentials like
the volunteers who donate their time, but toilet paper.
also the generosity of Waimakariri locals Toot for Tucker and other donations in
who donated food for those in need.’’ the lead up to Christmas also stocked up
Demand for help has not let up at
Kaiapoi’s food bank after volunteerswere
overwhelmed in the lead up to Christmas.
The Community Wellbeing North
CanterburyTrust food bank has been kept
busy supporting families across the
Waimakariri and Hurunui districts.
‘‘The demand was what we would have
expected for food parcels, given the rising
cost of living,’’ the trust’s marketing
manager,Louise Leitch, said.
‘‘There was high demand and it was on
apar with last year, which was our busiest
ever.’’
The Kaiapoi food bank gave out 250 food
parcels preChristmas, and demand had
been steady since it reopened in the New
Year.
district.
‘‘We have the good fortune of having
volunteers who provide these services for
those who need them and Iamgrateful to
those people.’’
Satisfy Food Rescue plays avaluable
role in providing food to the region’s food
banks throughout the year, rescuing food
from local supermarkets.
Since it was founded in 2014, Satisfy
Food Rescue has prevented nearly 1.2
million kg of food from reaching landfill.
Ms Leitch said 1435 gifts were
distributed as part of Wellbeing North
Canterbury’s Christmas gift giving
programme.
‘‘The demand was still there, but there
was afew less gifts donated, which is
understandable in the current climate.’’
