Surréalisme. Le Grand Jeu
2024 marks the centenary of the publication of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto,
and thus the birth of the Surrealist movement. This French-language book celebrates
100 years of Surrealism, combining historical retrospection, interpretation, and the
perspective of contemporary artists who explore Surrealist themes and forms in their
work. It is based on the Surrealist literary magazine Le Grand Jeu, which was published
between 1928 and 1930.
Games to which the Surrealists referred are a core theme of the volume: chess
and the “Jeu de Marseille,” a special set of tarot cards created by the Surrealists in the
south of France, where many had to flee from German occupation between 1940 and
1944. Alongside, the essays investigate topics such as identity, metamorphosis, esotericism,
kabbalah, and magic, as well as speculation, abstraction, and automatism.
Moreover, new light is shed on the female members and affiliates of the Surrealist
movement, including Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Suzanne Duchamp, Leonor
Fini, Gladys Hynes, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning, and others.
The book is also an homage to the never-published fourth issue of Le Grand Jeu,
which has been preserved as a maquette and is reproduced here in facsimile images.
Juri Steiner is the director of the MCBA, Plateforme 10 in Lausanne and
a leading scholar of the history of Dada, Surrealism, and Situationism.
sondern falsch identifizierte Pelargonien.
Vorwort Katharina Ammann
James Baldwins wegweisender Essay «Stranger in the Village»
Zeitschrift Harper’s Magazine erschienen. Ausgangslage war seine
Erfahrung als Schwarzer Mann in der Schweiz. Genau 70 Jahre
mein grosser Dank an Céline Eidenbenz, Sarah Mühlebach, Laura
Arminda Kingsley vom Aargauer Kunsthaus sowie an Mandy
Stranger in the Village
Le racisme au miroir de James Baldwin
James Baldwin (1924–87) penned his famous essay “Stranger in the Village” in the
early 1950s during a stay in the Swiss Alpine village of Loèches-les-Bains. It is the
starting point for an artistic examination of the subject of racism in Switzerland, and
in the art and culture industries in particular, that is documented in this multilingual
French-German book.
Works by international contemporary artists—including Igshaan Adams, Kader
Attia, Omar Ba, James Bantone, Marlene Dumas, Melanie Grauer, Jonathan Horowitz,
Sasha Huber, Pierre Koralnik, Glenn Ligon, Martine Syms, and others—reflect
and react to Baldwin’s literary-political treatise. Essays contributed by distinguished
authors supplement the artistic debate and highlight the consequences of the prevailing
structural racism.
The book is an invitation to break taboos. It holds a mirror up to us, raising
questions that concern us all, and reveals the topicality of everyday racism to every
one of us through the artworks it features.
Trasmette calore e immanenza,
Utilizzando i resti
sviluppano e proliferano nelle zone d’ombra.
Aldo Mozzini. Casematte is the first major book on the work of Swiss artist Aldo
Mozzini. It features his energetic art through more than 200 illustrations along with
texts by distinguished Swiss curators. A conversation with the artist rounds off the
volume, which highlights Mozzini’s contribution to the contemporary art scene in
Switzerland.
Born in Locarno in 1956, Aldo Mozzini has lived and worked in Zurich since the
1980s. Galleries and museums in Switzerland, Italy, and France have shown his works
in solo and group exhibitions, and he has won the Swiss Art Award twice, in 2012 and
2019. His oeuvre comprises drawing, painting, objects, photography, sculpture, and
installation, moving restlessly from one form of expression to another.
The book reviews 40 years of Mozzini’s career and explores various aspects of
his humorous and poetic art. The impressive body of his paintings and graphic works
is closely linked to the sculptures and installations that remain Aldo Mozzini’s preferred
media.
In Wirklichkeit funktionieren
verbreiten.
Time set in stone: Hans Pieler’s
fascinating photographs
of observatories and temple
buildings
Hans Pieler
Architectures of Time
For thousands of years, people have built so-called calendar buildings: structures that
served as sundials for measuring time or were used for astronomical calculations. The
most famous examples include the Pyramids of Giza, the Megalithic Temples of Malta,
the Solarium Augusti on Rome’s Campus Martius, as well as ancient observatories in
Korea, Baghdad, Cairo, or Samarkand. The oldest known archeo-astronomical device
dates back to around 6000 BCE and was only discovered some twenty years ago at
Nabta Playa in Egypt.
The German photographer Hans Pieler (1951–2012) dedicated himself and his
work of many years to these calendar buildings. In a wide-ranging photographic project
spanning fifteen years, Pieler travelled the world in search of such sites, studied
them, and recorded many of them in striking photographs. His interest was focused
both on the architecture and its particular coding through the respective culture as
well as on the theory of photography as an allegorical image of time.
Pieler’s premature passing in 2012 led to the fascinating project remaining unfinished
and unpublished. This book now for the first time features a selection of some
100 of the best images from the artist’s estate. Supplemented by illuminating essays,
they form a unique photographic study of these architectures and their meaning and
purpose as a reflection of time set in stone.
Hubertus von Amelunxen is an art historian, editor, curator, photography
critic, and professor for the philosophy of photography and cultural studies.
He served as president of Braunschweig University of Art and of the European
Graduate School, based in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Valletta, Malta.
Ali Ghandtschi is a Berlin-based photographer and keeper of the estate
Family Letters
Alberto Giacometti (1901–66) maintained close ties to his
family throughout his life. At least once a week he wrote to
his parents to keep them up to date on anything that was
important to him. For the first time ever, excerpts from this
correspondence are published in this book, revealing insights
into this close-knit family and the core concerns of Giacometti’s
Ernst Scheidegger
Photographer
Ernst Scheidegger (1923–2016) ranks among Switzerland’s most distinguished
photographers of the 20th century. His portraits of artists made his name
internationally. Scheidegger’s photographs of Alberto Giacometti at his Paris
studio or in his native Val Bregaglia in Switzerland continue to shape the
public image of this celebrated artist today.
Ernst Scheidegger: Photographer offers a fresh and contemporary look
at his multi-faceted body of work. In particular, it enables an encounter with
Scheidegger’s hitherto little-published early work and thus undertakes a reassessment
of his entire oeuvre. The images are supplemented by essays that trace
his career and self-concept as a photographer and bring his personality to life.
Alpine Passes of Switzerland
Journey to Modernity
For centuries, the Alps were an almost insurmountable barrier
on the way from Europe’s north to the south, and vice versa.
Today, highways and high-capacity railroad lines serve as indispensable
transit routes. Richard von Tscharner’s striking photographs
demonstrate the boldness of Switzerland’s modern
Alpine crossings and their beautiful landscapes. Supplementary
essays trace their history, explain their military importance,
and describe the vision that resulted in the construction of new
base tunnels for train lines opened in 2007 and 2016.
Verbal Doodling. 30 Years, Questions, Answers.
Alfredo Häberli is one of the world’s most widely acclaimed
product designers. Major international brands such as BMW,
Camper, Georg Jensen, Iittala, or Vitra can be found among
his clients. In the first of these two volumes, Häberli looks back
at the people, places, and objects that have influenced him and
shaped his ideas and creative process. For the second volume,
he has invited 30 personalities from his circle to ask him one
question each, which he answers frankly and in good humor.
Hannah Höch
Assembled Worlds
In the 1920s, Hannah Höch (1889–1978) broke with the traditions of representation
and vision. Her works dissected a world marked by the catastrophe
of the Great War and an intense consumer culture, and reassembled it in
revolutionary, poetic, and often ironic ways. Höch kept to her artistic means
and her poetic-radical imagination, oscillating between social observation
and a dream world, even in the post-WWII period. Scissors and glue were the
weapons of her art of montage, of which she was a co-inventor.
Richly illustrated and expertly annotated, Hannah Höch: Assembled
Worlds for the first time explores this extraordinary artist’s fascination with
film and the visual culture of the modern industrial age. The book demonstrates
how the technique of montage evolved in the interplay between artistic
experimentation, commercial exploitation, and political appropriation.
