Wednesday February 7 2024 Selwyn Times Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz LETTERS 15 If Selwyn residents contribute to Te Kaha, it should be at a lesser rate SOME Christchurch City Councillors and their mayor think Selwyn residents and ratepayers should help fund their stadium. Do they not believe in “no taxation without representation”? Will there be a board with regional representation for the stadium? Who will benefit most from the stadium? It will be Christchurch businesses, particularly those in hospitality and accommodation. If Christchurch city wants more income to fund their stadium let them levy the businesses which will benefit most and keep their sticky fingers out of the wallets of Selwyn residents. I have an alternate proposal. Let there be a regional facilities rate, like the Canterbury Museum rate, based on population. Waimakariri and Selwyn districts have many facilities Christchurch residents use for free or at no more charge than locals. Let there be a regional facilities rate that helps fund the construction and operation of regional facilities, not just Christchurch’s stadium. Let Christchurch residents help fund the facilities they also use, this would be fair and equitable. Somehow I don’t think all Christchurch city councillors and their mayor are interested in fairness and being reasonable. -Mark Alexander While Selwyn residents will benefit from having Te Kaha built in Christchurch in terms of the sports matches and concerts that it brings to the wider Canterbury region, Selwyn needs to be careful when assessing its economic value to the district. If anything, the stadium will bring an economic loss for Selwyn because when residents of Selwyn go into Christchurch to attend an event at Te Kaha, they will likely dine out at a Christchurch restaurant before, and drink at a Christchurch pub afterwards, and then catch a Christchurch-based taxi home from the city. All that economic activity stimulates business activity in Christchurch when residents otherwise, if it weren’t for the stadium, might be dining and/ or drinking at Selwyn establishments. I What believe it is reasonable for Where When What What Contact Where Where When When Contact Contact What are we doing? Selwyn District ratepayers to contribute, but the amount needs to be very modest per ratepayer compared to those of Christchurch city. -Kane David, Rolleston Chlorination/stadium I grew up with the best water without chlorine all my life. Now for some reason the council wants to make it permanent. Instead of finding a scapegoat for their overspending on things that don’t concern Selwyn, maybe they need to take responsibility and provide the basic living essentials that we need as a top priority. We seem to be compensating to please somebody else, whether it’s to pay for the Christchurch stadium or not. I don’t care for the stadium and how it will benefit people from overseas, etc. I just need the basics – water, and to see the rate we already pay is being used to supply us water. For other things like the Selwyn stadium I don’t care for that either, I don’t play rugby. If they want a club or stadium raise funds instead of raising rates to cover the overspending. -Liz Goslin We’re working in your area Shands Road Intersections and Trents Road Upgrade We’ll be installing a temporary traffic management layout.
