Wrap your tastebuds
around National Lamb
Day – 15 February
• By Isabelle Teresa
New Zealand used to observe a
National Lamb Day but not many kiwis
knew about it, largely because it was on
May 24. Why? Well, in 1882, that’s when
the first shipment of our frozen lamb
arrived in the UK. Its journey on the SS
Dunedin proved that refrigerated meat
could be safely exported over such a long
distance and marked NZ’s debut onto
the world stage of international trade.
Thing is, who feels like a lamb chops
barbie in late autumn?
So this year, the celebration is being
re-booted and observed on a much
better date – 98 days earlier, when that
crucial shipment left New Zealand. This
places the event fair and square at the
golden end of summer – Thursday 15
February, to be precise.
The idea for this simple but genius
switch came from Ag Proud, a farmerled
group that launched in 2019
following a period of bad international
press for NZ farming. Ag Proud
has three core objectives: creating
awareness around mental health and
wellbeing for those in the ag sector
and their families, promoting positive
agricultural practices, and strengthening
the relationship between urban and ag
communities.
The day is being re-launched with
a bang at the South Island’s largest
agricultural event, Southern Fieldays
at Waimumu, February 14 to 16. Ag
Proud will be cranking the barbecue on
the 15th, giving away free lamb chops.
Special guests on the day will include
Olympians!
Everyone will doubtless be wearing the
new T-shirt, created to mark the day. $12
from each Tee goes to charity – order
yours through agproud.co.nz.
The Rock radio station is getting into
the spirit and will be urging its listeners
to enjoy NZ lamb on the day, wherever
they are, nationwide. The relaunch is
also being supported by farmers, meat
processors, retailers and Beef + Lamb
New Zealand.
Lamb prices are currently at their
lowest since 2017. Ag Proud chair
Jon Pemberton points out that,
although this is challenging for
farmers, that makes it even easier
for kiwis to buy quality lamb at a
reduced price to enjoy on National
Lamb Day. ‘’We are looking forward
to seeing national sales go up and
people enjoying lamb a lot more.’’
No need to talk me into it. Pass the
mint sauce!
