‘MARCH’ing Forth!
HISTORY
The name of March comes from Martius, the first month of the
earliest Roman calendar. It was named after Mars, the Roman god of war, and an
ancestor of the Roman people through his sons Romulus and Remus. His month
Martius was the beginning of the season for warfare and the festivals held in his
honour during the month were mirrored by others in October, when the season
for these activities came to a close. Martius remained the first month of the Roman
calendar year perhaps as late as 153 BC and several religious observances in
the first half of the month were originally new year’s celebrations. Even in late antiquity,
Roman mosaics picturing the months sometimes still placed March first.
“stay active, feel
young.” ~ Karma Halleran
D65: Are you a Kootenay Kid?
RA: Yes, pretty much. My parents discovered
the West Kootenay and fell in
love with it, moving here from the coast
when I was one. I have been here ever
since baring time away for school and
work in my early career. I grew up in
Castlegar and have a strong connection
to all the West Kootenay communities.
I am so thankful they discovered
this region. It was and is a wonderful
place to be a kid, and was just as wonderful
to raise my own children here.
D65: Did you play sports as a kid?
RA: I love many sports... I was the kind
of kid if you bounced the ball I would
chase it... all my friends were like that.
My parents were active and supported
me in the organized sports I joined. And
though all my friends played at least
one organized sport, we spent many
more hours after school and entire
weekends playing all the time - road
hockey, baseball, softball - rounders,
500 up, basketball - 21, one on one,
football, yards. It didn’t really matter
what we played, we just needed a ball,
a field or road and the kids from the
neighbourhood.
D65: What is your favourite sport?
RA: Hockey is one of them. I love soccer
too and many other sports and recreation
activities. If hiking in the forest
and mountains counts as a sport then
that would be my favourite.
D65: What did your hockey career
look like?
RA: It’s a stretch to say I have or had
a hockey career and my hockey pals
would agree. :) Like so many local kids
I played for fun and loved to get on the
ice and chase the puck and I still do.
Whether organized, playing shinny
on a pond, or road hockey, my friends
and I loved playing the game. Coaching
the game with friends as our kids
grew up through the system was very
rewarding as well. I just loved getting to
know the kids, teaching them a sport,
and being part of their team. It was a
blast. We still share stories of the fun
we shared with the kids and parents.
Hockey has allowed me to meet some
great people.
D65: What was/is your career?
RA: I studied Forestry and worked in
the industry for a short while. I was
lucky to have been employed by Selkirk
College to teach forestry and take on
different administrative roles for them.
It allowed me and my family to stay in
this community I love so much.
D65: Are you retired?
RA: I retired from Selkirk in 2022 and
now I am finding time for other things,
I still seem to be really busy.
D65: Registration for the
55+Games opens March 1st - are
you participating again this year?
RA: This will be my third year – I’ve
participated in two games - 2022
and 2023 playing hockey.
D65: What is that experience like?
RA: It is a great experience – meeting
new players from around the region.
As a team game the camaraderie is
the highlight for me. The Kootenay
Glacier Kings (the team name for our
region, of which there are different age
teams, currently a 55+, 60+ and we are
trying to ice a 65+ for the Salmon Arm
Games). The Kootenay Glacier Kings
have been representing the region at
the games for a long time and there are
guys on our teams that have competed
at the games for many years. We do go
through some effort to organize practice
games (often between the two age
divisions). We take it seriously... participating
with the intention of winning,
which we have done occasionally,
bringing home Gold and Silver once or
twice and qualifying for the Nationals.
Most of the GKG guys still play some
type of organized or drop in hockey.
I have to say there is something pretty
special about hitting the road with
your team. Anticipating the battle
of competing against other teams
representing their zones for the
top prize. I think it keeps ones spirit
young, and helps us focus on staying
active and in comfortable shape for
the sport we are playing.
We never know what the competition
will be like, the games are short
so we have to come ready to play.
Everyone seems to enjoy themselves.
If anyone is considering signing up
for any of these games... I say do it.
You won’t regret it. For those thinking
about the games in the sports
they love I’d say why not give it a
whirl! Stay active, feel young.

Cannabis Corner
As spring begins
to unfold, you
may find yourself
outside seeking
Terese Bowors ways to embrace
vitality and movement
through walking, hiking or
biking. These adventures are a great
opportunity to turn our attention to
a topic of joint health. Let’s delve into
how Cannabis, often underestimated
in its therapeutic potential, can play
a role in promoting joint health, offering
seniors a pathway to ease and
improved mobility.
As we age, joint issues can become
a prevalent concern, impacting
mobility and overall well-being. Conditions
such as arthritis or general
wear and tear can lead to discomfort
and reduced flexibility, hindering the
pursuit of an active and fulfilling life.
Cannabis and Joint Health for Seniors
Central to the potential support
Cannabis offers for joint health are its
anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabinoids,
notably CBD (cannabidiol),
have been studied for their ability to
interact with the Endocannabinoid
System, which plays a crucial role in
regulating inflammatory responses
in the body. By modulating these responses,
Cannabis may help alleviate
inflammation in joints, providing relief
to those experiencing discomfort.
The Endocannabinoid System, a
complex network of receptors in the
body, is involved in regulating various
physiological processes, including
inflammation. CBD, in particular,
has been recognized for its interaction
with these receptors, particularly
CB2 receptors found in immune cells,
potentially influencing the inflammatory
pathways and offering a natural
approach to managing joint discomfort.
Exploring the various methods
of Cannabis intake opens up a
spectrum of possibilities. Topical
applications, such as CBD-infused
creams and balms, offer localized
relief directly to the affected areas,
making them particularly effective
for joint pain. Additionally, infused
CBD oils provide a versatile option,
allowing seniors to incorporate CBD
into their daily routines. Whether
applied directly or ingested, these
methods provide tailored approaches
to address joint health, catering to
individual preferences and needs.
Crafting a Cannabis routine tailored
to individual needs is essential.
Seniors interested in exploring the
potential benefits for joint health
should start with low doses, gradually
adjusting based on their unique responses.
St. Patrick’s Day
Sunday, March 17, 2024
St. Patrick’s Day commemorates the life and deeds of St.
Patrick, who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland
in the 5th century. Contrary to popular belief, St.
Patrick was not born in Ireland but was actually born in
Roman Britain. At the age of sixteen, he was captured by
Irish raiders and enslaved in Ireland for six years. During
his captivity, he found solace in religion and eventually escaped
back to Britain. After becoming a cleric, he returned
to Ireland as a missionary, where he played a significant
role in spreading Christianity and establishing churches,
monasteries, and schools.
Traditions and Symbols:
St. Patrick’s Day is associated with various traditions and
symbols, many of which have evolved over centuries.
Some of the most notable include:
Wearing of Green: Green is the predominant colour
associated with St. Patrick’s Day. It is believed to symbolize
Ireland’s lush green landscape and is worn as a form of
national pride. People around the world don green clothing,
accessories, and shamrock pins to participate in the
festivities.
Shamrock: The shamrock, a three-leaf clover, is closely
associated with St. Patrick and is said to have been used
by him to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit) to the Irish people. Today, the shamrock
is a ubiquitous symbol of St. Patrick’s Day and is worn
as a badge or incorporated into decorations.
Parades: St. Patrick’s Day parades are a highlight of the
celebration, especially in cities with large Irish populations
such as Dublin, New York City, Boston, and Chicago. These
parades feature colorful floats, marching bands, cultural
performances, and displays of Irish heritage.
Traditional Irish Food and Drink: St. Patrick’s Day is often
celebrated with traditional Irish dishes such as corned
beef and cabbage, Irish stew, soda bread, and potato dishes.
Irish pubs and bars also serve a variety of beverages,
including Guinness stout, Irish whiskey, and Irish coffee.
Music and Dance: Traditional Irish music and dance
play a central role in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. From
lively jigs and reels to haunting ballads, Irish music sets
the mood for festivities. Many celebrations feature performances
by Irish musicians and dancers, including step
dancing and céilí dances.
A point of perfect balance on the journey
through the Wheel of the Year. Night
and day are of equal length and in perfect
equilibrium - dark and light, masculine
and feminine, inner and outer, in balance.
But the year is now waxing and at
this moment light defeats the dark. The
natural world is coming alive, the Sun is
gaining in strength and the days are becoming
longer and warmer. The gentle
whispered promise of Imbolc is fulfilled
in the evident and abundant fertility of
the Earth at Ostara. It is time for the hopes
of Imbolc to become action. The energy
is expansive and exuberant. It is the first
day of Spring! Ostara takes its name after
the Germanic goddess, Eostre/Ostara,
who was traditionally honoured in the
month of April with festivals to celebrate
fertility, renewal and re-birth. It was from
Eostre that the Christian celebration of
Easter evolved, and indeed the naming
of the hormone Eostrogen, essential to
women’s fertility.
Grampa’s Joke
A female CNN journalist heard
about a very old Jewish man who
had been going to the Western
Wall to pray, twice a day, every day,
for a long, long time. So she went
to check it out. She went to the
Western Wall and there he was,
walking slowly up to the holy site.
She watched him pray and after
about 45 minutes, when he turned
to leave, using a cane and moving
very slowly, she approached him
for an interview.
”Pardon me, sir, I’m Rebecca Smith
from CNN. What’s your name?*
”Morris Feinberg,” he replied.
”Sir, how long have you been
coming to the Western Wall and
praying?”
”For about 60 years.”
”60 years! That’s amazing! What do
you pray for?”
”I pray for peace between the
Christians, Jews and the Muslims.”
”I pray for all the wars and all the
hatred to stop.”
”I pray for all our children to grow
up safely as responsible adults and
to love their fellow man.”
”I pray that politicians tell us the
truth and put the interests of the
people ahead of their own interests.”
So the woman asked, “And how
do you feel after doing this for 60
years?”
”Like I’m talking to a f$@%ing wall.”
Roadblocks with your
Ideal Retirement?
Are you facing roadblocks with your ideal retirement?
Are you worried that you won’t have
enough money? Are you ill or you have to provide
care for a special someone. Why are you
putting it off? A friend of mine asked me the
other day how old are you? I said 67, they said
no way you look so young. I commented I like to
keep busy. Running a business keeps your mind
active and your body moving.
What things have been calling you? What gives
you energy? Then do it. Start thinking about
what you want from retirement. Keep a journal
of your goals, aspirations and to do list. That
means visualizing your ideal day. Where are you
living? What are you doing? Are you gardening,
playing pickleball, volunteering 2 days a week.
What is your schedule? Who are you spending
your time with? Your wife, partner, friends? Let
me know I would love to hear your comments.
The older we
get, the more
life experiences we will have had,
and the more things stored in our
brains. One thing you cannot store
in that cranium of yours is all the
things you have to consider when
starting a new venture later in life.
Many times in my years of teaching
entrepreneurship I have heard
(always from men) “It’s all up here”,
while tapping the side of
their heads. Yeah right!
Even a simple business
your goals, any market research
you have done to
your competition and
competitive advantage,
all the laws and regulations
and licenses required
for your idea, legal
structure, insurances, tax
requirements, how much
you need to pay yourself,
pricing structure including
costs of doing business,
start-up expenses
and projected cash flow,
when/how you might
get any money required
to get going, and possibly
more. Without this,
all that stuff in your head
gets jumbled, forgotten,
glossed over, or ignored!
Lost Book of Remedies
By Mary Newman
Pain & Inflammation Relief
Regardless of your reason, fear or a
desire to stay away from pharmaceuticals,
you will be happy to know
there are several options for relieving
pain and inflammation…all natural,
found and discovered from around
the world.
General Pain
There are all types of pain, located in
various parts of our bodies such as
a headache, a backache, or a toothache.
Willow Bark
As a great option for treating inflammation,
willow bark has been used
for centuries. It has gone back as
far as the 5th century BC, with Hippocrates
writing about the benefits.
With willow trees found around the
world, it has been widely accepted
as a natural treatment for pain and
inflammation.
At first, people often simply chewed
on the bark to help relieve pain and
even fevers. As time and technology
progressed, it took on the form of
a dried herb that was steeped like
a tea, and now a liquid or capsule
form.
However, it is thought to be risky for
children to consume.
Turmeric
A popular Middle Eastern spice, turmeric
not only helps to protect our
bodies from free radical molecules
that can damage tissue and cells but
also has been attributed to combat
inflammation and pain.
It can be digested, as well as used
externally as a topical application
for arthritic joints or wounds. Make a
paste by mixing 2 tablespoons with
water to apply topically. Other ways
to use it include digesting up to 1.5
teaspoons of the dried root powder
each day, take a 250 mg supplement,
or use it often in seasoning
your food.
It has also been reported by many
people to help with other conditions
such as indigestion, psoriasis, and ulcers.
Wasabi
Even though it might hurt going
down, some hot spices are helpful
in relieving painful joints. If you can
tolerate intense spicy foods, such as
wasabi, can mimic pain killers. Wasabi
is a plant naturally growing in Japan,
along the streams and rivers.
It has been cultivated into cuisine
since historical times but experienced
a surge in popularity in the
1990’s.
Fortunately, spicy foods and snacks
are trending now, including wasabi
flavored items. So, you should be
able to find wasabi just about anywhere.
Although, you should make
sure you can tolerate it in small doses
first.
Powerful Oils to Reduce Pain
Oils are being used for more than
just cooking now, from aromatherapy
to even pain relief. There are
several that have been used for centuries
around the world, tested early
on by our forefathers, such as:
• Evening Primrose Oil – Women
around the world have been using
evening primrose oil to help with
painful menstrual cycles. It is rich in
the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic
and is known around the world
as helpful in balancing hormones.
Supplements make it easy to take
during the menstrual cycle, typically
starting on the first day, and through
ovulation.
• Arnica Oil – Arnica oil was developed
from the arnica plant, most
commonly found in Siberia and Europe.
Used as a topical treatment, it
aides in healing bruises and reducing
inflammation and pain by applying
to painful joints twice a day.
Many carpal tunnel patients are finding
enough relief to avoid surgery.
• Lavender and Peppermint Oil –
Teamed together, these 2 oils have
been known to help with ailments
such as myofascial pain, headaches,
and fibromyalgia. Lavender works to
release muscle tension, while peppermint
can improve circulation. Mix
a couple drops and massage into the
temples for a headache, or in other
painful areas. Lavender can also help
in relaxing simply by the aroma itself.
Essential oils can be found just about
anywhere and in a wide price range.
The purer it is, the more benefits you
will get from them.
Headaches
At times, a headache can be debilitating,
to the point of not being able
to get out of bed for hours, or days.
There are plenty of over the counter
medicines and prescriptions that
you can get. But, if you want to use
a natural remedy, there is also help.
Potato Slices
For migraines or headaches, try applying
2 or 3 raw potato slices to
your forehead. You can keep them in
place with a scarf or headband and
leave them on for a couple hours.
If a headache is lingering for a longer
period, try drinking a ¼ cup of warm
potato water, 3 times a day until it
goes away. Simply grate a raw potato,
then squeeze the natural juice
Golden Milk: An Ayurvedic Recipe
Golden milk is another name for haldi ka doodh, which translates as “turmeric milk”. Curcumin, turmeric’s most significant
compound, has medicinal properties and is used to reduce joint pain, arthritis, inflammation and even treat depression.
Ingredients
1-1/2 cups light coconut milk
1-1/2 cups unsweetened plain almond milk
1-1/2 tsp ground turmeric
Large pinch of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom powder
1 tbsp coconut oil
Small pinch of saffron
Pinch of ground pepper
(optional but highly recommended)
Sweetener of choice (honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar to taste)
Method
• Warm milk in a small pan over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally.
• Once warm, slowly add the oil and spices while continuing to stir. Mix
until there are no chunks and the powder has fully absorbed into the milk.
If you have a hand blender, this works perfectly well and it also creates a
yummy frothy texture.
• Remove from heat and let cool to a drinkable temperature. Once the
temp has cooled to about 110 degrees, add a spoonful of honey to the
desired sweetness. Top off with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
• Sit, sip and enjoy!
out, and drink up. Potatoes have
anti-hemorrhagic and anti-anemic
properties, as well as vitamin C, A, K,
and sulfur, which all contribute to relieving
headaches.
Toothaches
Whether it’s a bad tooth, an infection,
or something stuck between
your teeth, a toothache can be quite
aggravating. If the toothache is persistent,
seek treatment from a dentist,
because it could lead to more serious
health concerns, such as heart
disease.
Truth be told though, nothing can
be more distracting and debilitating
to the average day than a throbbing
toothache. Fortunately, there are
several natural remedies for treating
a toothache. And, most of these options
have ingredients that can be
easily found or already on hand.
• Garlic – As a natural anesthetic, garlic
can quickly help relieve a toothache
by pressing a clove into the
problem tooth. If you get frequent
toothaches, chew a small amount of
raw garlic each day.
• Onion – Similar to garlic, onion also
has the same effect on toothaches.
Chew on raw onion, multiple times a
day, if needed.
• Clove oil – Generations have been
using clove oil for tooth pain for
years. Soak a cotton ball in the clove
oil, then press it into the tender area.
• Lemon – If you get frequent toothaches
and discomfort, rinse your
mouth each morning upon waking
with lemon juice. It works to remove
plaque and bacteria build up, creating
a healthier environment in your
mouth. This is great also for cleaning
the teeth and freshening the breath.
• Salt – A tried and true remedy for
toothaches and sores in the mouth,
is to gargle and rinse with warm salt
water. Do this a few times a day until
the pain or sores are gone.
Of course, these options are not to
replace a major problem within your
mouth. If none of these work, you
probably should get in to see a dentist
to permanently fix the problem.
An unhealthy mouth can lead to a
more serious health crisis, such as
heart disease.
Be careful though. All the above-mentioned
remedies for pain are not to
substitute good sound advice from a
trained professional, especially if the
pain persists. If the pain does not go
away, you should speak with a physician,
because there could be a more
serious health issue brewing.
Return of the Light! seasonal affective disorder
If your mood was as cold and dark
as mine these last few months, well
then we’re not alone! You know the
feeling: You’re more tired these days,
maybe anxious or moody. Cocooning,
it’s harder to get out of bed. That’s the
problem: The gloom caused by Mother
Nature each winter in much of the
country is biologically felt to some degree
by an estimated one in four of us
-- usually starting around November
and then magically ending by April
with spring’s thaw. For most people,
it manifests as winter doldrums, the
“I-can’t-wait-for-winter-to-end” feeling
that produce mild but manageable
sluggishness and food cravings.
But some of us have a more severe
form of winter depression seasonal affective
disorder, the aptly acronymed
SAD that is typically diagnosed after
at least two consecutive years of more
intense symptoms. Either way, it stems
from the same cause: Sensitivity to the
lack of sunlight that results from winter’s
“shorter” days and disrupts our circadian
rhythm, or internal body clock.
The degree of this sensitivity, and
resulting winter depression severity,
largely stems from some combination
of other factors - your geography, genetics,
and individual brain chemistry.
With SAD, the lack of sunlight causes
the brain to work overtime producing
melatonin, the hormone that regulates
your body clock and sleep patterns
and a hormone that has been
linked to depression. In addition to
sunlight -- or more specifically, the
lack of it -- the cold temperatures of
this mean season may also play a role.
So we’re at the end! I can see the light
at the end of the tunnel! Exposing
yourself to natural light will help boost
serotonin production and your overall
mood.
Tips for next year:
Go to sleep and wake up at the same
time every day to help normalize your
circadian rhythms.
Structure your eating patterns by
eating three meals a day, around the
same time every day.
Avoid the common urge in the winter
to overindulge in simple carbohydrates,
such as starchy or sweet foods;
eat a balanced diet of proteins, fruits
and vegetables,
and whole grains
(e.g., brown rice,
quinoa).
Make (and keep)
plans with friends
and families to
help you stay connected
to your
loved ones. Get
outside! Take time
for yourself and
engage in activities
you enjoy.
Sudoku
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve
a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill
each row, column and box. Each number
can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
The more numbers you name, the easier it
gets to solve!
