Early settlement
In1889 and 1890 G.O. Buchanan and brothers
George and David Kane came to Kaslo
to stake timber claims. When silver mining
activity was reported in the area, the Kane
brothers subdivided their lease into town lots.
Back then the nascent community, which was
more like a muddy space carved out of the
forest, was known as Kane’s Landing.
In only a few short years, newcomers transformed
the rough settlement on the delta.
The stumps of the huge fir, cedar and cottonwoods
were pulled and burned; the streets
were laid out grid-fashion in lower town and
the first proper houses with glass windows
and porches were built.
Kaslo was incorporated as a city in 1893, after
which the population soon grew to 3,000
people, most of them intent on seeking their
fortunes in the newly discovered mines.
Disaster struck in 1894 as fire, flood and gale
force winds came in succession. In February,
half of the town’s commercial district was destroyed,
as well as 60-70 houses, two hotels, the
jail and several other two storey buildings.
But Kaslo citizens were resourceful and determined
to rebuild. By 1897 Kaslo had all the services
of a progressive mining supply centre: a
cigar factory, brewery, dry goods stores, several
saloons, hotels and brothels and its own newspaper
economy was created that was varied
enough to withstand the changes of time.
Take a stroll around Kaslo’s streets and try to
guess which buildings date to the silver mining
boom. Kaslo has nine structures catalogued
in the Canadian
Register of Historic
Places and is home to
one Municipal Heritage
Site, the Kemball
Memorial Building;
and two National
Historic Sites: the SS
Moyie and the Village
Hall.
Kaslo City Hall The
Village Hall was built
in 1898 – the same
year the SS Moyie
made her maiden
voyage on Kootenay
Lake and 5 years after
the founding of
the “City of Kaslo”.
(Think about the
soaring optimism
of 128 years ago implied
by the word
‘city’.) This graceful
wooden building
on the corner of 4th
Street and B Avenue
is the oldest municipal
hall still standing
in mainland BC.
When the municipal offices
are open, you can take a
self-guided tour of the
building. Read more about
Kaslo’s history by taking a
stroll through the pocket
park right next to the Hall.
St Andrew’s Church, kitty-corner
from the Village
Hall and built in 1893, still
holds occasional services
but in recent years has become
an important concert
venue, community hall and
sustainable Food Hub. This
past year, when social gatherings
were not possible, its
interior has been beautifully
restored.
SS Moyie When she was
launched on October 22,
1898, there were no roads,
no trains, and only foot, horse
or mule travel into these
hidden mountain valleys.
You could not overstate this ship’s value, or
the affection the people in the many isolated
communities on Kootenay Lake felt for her
during her 60 years of faithful service. Now
125 years old, and dry-docked at the lower
end of Front Street, the ship is still a welcoming
sight. The SS Moyie is both Kaslo’s Visitor
Centre and a captivating museum. Beautifully
designed 13 month 125th calendars are available
at the Village Municipal office, Figments
and the Legion in Kaslo, JB Fletcher Store
in Ainsworth, or email archives@klhs.bc.ca
All purchases support the ongoing upkeep of
the SS Moyie.
St Mark’s Anglican Church 601 5th Street
was built in 1895 and still has Sunday services.
There is a labyrinth hidden from the street on
the church grounds, just the thing for a contemplative
walk.
1896 Building The primary appeal of this
historic place lies in its architecture and construction
materials. It is an example of a classical
two-story brick building in Kaslo, with
a tie-bar, bullnose detailing and brick arched
windows. This was one of the first buildings
to be made of brick from the Kaslo-based Millington
Brothers Brick and Tile Yard, which
demonstrates the early citizens' commitment to
make a living on Kootenay Lake. Built in 1896
for Riedel and Kuester, Bakers and Grocers, this
historic place exemplifies an important stage in
our economic development and evokes an era.
Having housed a church as well as various commercial
uses over the years, the 1896 Building
continues in its role of economic and spiritual
development within the community.
Coworking, Tech & Creativity
Technology and connectivity
is so very important
in this day and age.
Luckily, Kaslo has access
to a fibre network that is as
good as it gets. The Kaslo infoNet Society (KiN) is
a Kaslo-based nonprofit Internet Service Provider
(ISP) that is unique in Canada. Despite challenging
terrain each subscribing home or business is connected
to the Internet with high speed fibre cable,
at costs below
that charged by
the major telecom
companies.
Expansion of
the system continues
each year,
replacing existing
wireless service
with much
higher capacity
fibre and serving
homes that
wireless Internet
can’t reach.
New residents
of the area are
finding they can
have well-paid
urban-based employment
while
enjoying life in a clean and picturesque environment.
Our high-speed internet makes working
from home possible.
As Internet has become an essential service, KiN
has been working continuously to improve reliability
of its system, even during power outages.
With the installation of a large generator, the Kemball
building offices enjoy power during outages.
In addition to high speed and reliable internet,
subscribers have access to the Voice-over-Internet
telephone service at a fraction of the cost charged
by telephone companies, and video conferencing
running on a local server. Monitoring of essential
services such as water systems and security equipment
are recently added features of KiN’s fibre
network.
(KLIC) The Kootenay Lake Innovation Centre
has a work-sharing space in the Kemball. The notfor-profit
society designs and implements programs
that serve the community, both here and
worldwide online, like last year's impressive live
music series organized in conjunction with the
Langham Cultural Society.
Mt Buchanan
Recreation
Area aka Bucky.
In Upper Kaslo
head up Victoria
St past the
cemeteries, then
follow Zwicky
Road to the
Trailhead parking
area. Once on the
multi-use K&S
Wagon Road Trail
you have access
to a number of
hiking, biking,
horseback riding
and quadding
trails in the Mt
Buchanan Recreation
Area.
Wardner Trail
or the “Viewpoint”:
a narrow
switchbacking
trail that leads to a ridge overlooking
Kaslo and Kootenay
Lake. The gain in elevation is
about 100 metres. If you’re really
fit and want a challenge, you
can make it up to the viewpoint
in 15 to 18 minutes. Or if not so
much, give yourself an hour for
both up and down.
Brake Check/Branch 7
FSR – North
Just north of the Kaslo village
limits, you can jump onto the
Jimi Crack Corn single track that
will get you to the Brake Check
trail head of the Access trail. A
little further on Hwy 31 watch
for the Branch 7 Forest service
road – it takes off on the left,
leading to a variety of trails.
This is an active logging area, so
weekend use is best.
recreation areas
Kaslo River Trail System
Accessible from the Village, on
foot. This lovely riverside stroll
is bracketed by two beet-red
covered bridges. The Unity
Bridge is at the lower end of 5th
Street and the Trailblazer Bridge
at the western end of the loop.
Located between the two is
the Kaslo Family Mountain Bike
Park. It’s really fun for kids, novice
and even expert mountain
bikers to swoop along.
True Blue Trail System
Above the airport. There is a lot
of variety on the multi-purpose
trails above the airport in the
True Blue Recreation Area, with
about nine trails of varying
difficulty. Spanish Moss (trail 9)
is one of our favourites to walk
or mountain bike!
North End of Kootenay Lake
The Lardeau Valley Forty
kms (25 miles) north of Kaslo
is the beautiful Lardeau Valley
which embraces the communities
of Lardeau, Cooper Creek, Meadow
Creek, Howser, Argenta and
Johnsons Landing.
The region includes five biogeoclimatic
zones, from low-lying wet
valleys with towering cedar and
cottonwoods to the scree on the
peaks dribbling down into spectacular
alpine meadows. Wildlife
includes deer, moose, elk, black and
grizzly bears, mountain caribou,
wolverine, wolves and mountain
goats. The streams home cutthroat
and rainbow Dolly Varden (bull
trout) and mountain whitefish.
The rich valley farmland is the result
of the ebb and flow over thousands
of years by the Duncan and
Lardeau Rivers through the marshy
flats at the head of the lake.
The valley was first settled at the
turn of the last century when a
flood of prospectors invaded the
area. In 1912, the first of several
homesteading families arrived to
eke out a living by farming and
logging on the bench land.
Duncan Dam
Kootenay Lake was dammed in
1967. The Duncan Dam, a 40 metre
earthfill dam with no power generation
facilities, was the first of the
three Columbia River Treaty dams
to be built in the Canadian section
of the Columbia River Basin. It
controls the flow of
the Duncan River,
the tributary that
provides about 13%
of the water flowing
into Kootenay Lake.
Lardeau Valley
Museum
Just past the Lardeau
Valley Community
Hall is a
small museum in
the historic Gerrard
Fishery building.
Operated by the
Lardeau Valley Historical
Society, it
showases a variety of local historic
artifacts which highlight a rich
history of mining, logging, agriculture,
homesteading, and the 1st
Nations history of the region.
There are many displays outside
on the grounds including a steam
donkey (an engine which was used
back in the day to winch logs to
the landing) and a new display of
heritage tractors and farming tools.
Visit on weekends, mid-June to
mid-September, 10am-3pm. or
by appointment, email museum.
The Meadow Creek
Spawning Channel
From late August to early October,
the flashing bright red of
thousands of spawning kokanee
is a sight to behold. The channel
Welcome to ‘downtown’ Meadow Creek
Argenta Flats Viewpoint.
was constructed in 1967 with
BC Hydro funds and was the
world’s largest at the time. The
spawning channel is open to the
public unless there is unusually
high bear activity. There are
walkways and an interpretive
site for visitors. It is located 4
km north of Meadow Creek off
Hwy 31.
Gerrard Rainbow
For local folks, a trip upriver to picnic
and view the spawning Gerrard
Flats at the head of the lake.
Photo Beatrice Massara
is a popular Mother’s Day tradition.
The road from Meadow Creek to
Gerrard is gravel, but wide. From
the bridge, the huge fish can easily
be mistaken for logs in the river.
reliably good through March
in most years.
Commercial heli and snowcat
skiing operations were
born here. On offer is a
boutique-style custom snow
Ainsworth & Woodbury
Ainsworth Hot Springs
In this small community, there are several
places to spend a quiet comfortable night.
Check in at the comfortable Ainsworth Motel
or at one of the campgrounds, B&B’s or guest
houses nearby.
Wander down to the lakeshore. There is a public
wharf where you can launch your boat, and
washrooms too. Head back up to JB Fletcher's
store for a walk back in time and interesting
gifts and souvenirs. They are building a new
museum in the basement this year!
At Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, the Pool and
Cave are open for public entry by reservation
only, Wednesday - Sunday , 10am - 7:30pm and
Monday 10am - 2pm. Registered hotel guests
have complimentary access to the hot springs,
between the hours of 8am and 9pm during
their stay in the resort. To reserve visit: www.
ainsworthhotsprings.com/our-water/
The source of the springs lies in the mountains
above the resort, in the Cody Caves
area. The water works its way down through
porous calcareous rock to the pools below, renewing
the water naturally approximately six
times a day.
Since time immemorial, the Ktunaxa
people (pronounced K-too-nah-ha) have
valued the springs as a place for healing.
Today, the site of the ancient hot springs is
home to the Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort.
In a pleasing circularity, the resort is now
owned and operated by the Lower Kootenay
First Nations Band.
The steaming open-air pool and horseshoe-shaped
cave, dimly lit and humid, the
walls and ceiling sculpted by the mineral rich
water flow, offer an exhilarating experience.
AINSWORTH MOTEL
Woodbury
Woodbury is home to a
thriving resort and marina
and the well known
Jones Boys Boats, a family
firm that offers boat and
ATV rentals, sales and
service.
The resort, open year
round, is a natural playground
right on the
shore of Kootenay Lake.
Woodbury Resort has
everything: boat rentals, camping, a restaurant
and pub, a convenience store with fishing tackle,
chalet rentals, a recreation hall and an outdoor
swimming pool. Twice a year, Terry Jones and
his staff host popular fishing derbies. Many a fish
story has become a Kootenay legend over a pint
or two in the pub.
Woodbury is also a
gateway to Kokanee
Glacier Provincial
Park and the Silver
Spray Cabin. In summer,
you can access
the park by driving
up Woodbury Creek
Forestry Road for 13
km to the trailhead.
In the winter, it’s a
deep snow paradise,
perfect for sledding all day. You’ll have no problem
negotiating and parking even the biggest of
truck and trailer rigs at Woodbury Resort.
Cody Cave Tours
Your Adventure Tour begins by exploring the
spectacular entrance chambers then rappel
down the 40ft Cody Falls downward to the terminal
sump. We ascend Cody Falls by ladder
and continue upstream observing the geology
and glacial effects on the cave environment. At
of calcite cementation on the once loose
boulder pile. From here you will continue
Coffee Creek
There is no highway
sign, but if you're driving
from Kaslo to Nelson,
you will have plenty
of warning that you are
approaching this Kootenay
Lake Provincial
Park. If you're slowing
down to 50 km per hour
and hugging a rock bluff
on your right side, with
Kootenay Lake straight
down from the cliff on
your left side, you’re
almost there. Pull in at
the Hydro substation
and park. It might take
a minute or two to spot
the trail leading down to
where Coffee Creek empties into Kootenay Lake.
Your reward is a secluded beach with great views
and good fishing.
Fishing
Kootenay Lake has some of the best fishing in
Canada. You can fish by boat, kayak or canoe
with bucktail streamers on the surface or plugs
down deep. Or cast from shore with spoons and
jigs. There are three different types of rainbows
in Kootenay Lake: Mykiss, Kamlooper and the
world renowned Gerrard rainbow with sizes
ranging from 1 to 20 lbs! Not to be outdone
is the bull trout or what the locals call dollies.
They are great to eat or smoke up for later and
range from 1 to 15 lbs.
In Kaslo, you can buy fishing tackle at Kane's
Landing Corner Store, A Avenue and Washington
Street in Upper Kaslo. Woodbury Resort can
also help you get set up, from a boat to tackle to
advice. Jones Boys Boats rents boats as well, and
you can rent canoes or kayaks at the Adventure
Centre on Front Street in Kaslo.
