NEWS UPDATE FEBUARY 29,2024 Bahrain: A sponsor now required to convert a visit visa into a work or dependent residence visa Bahrain: Für die Umwandlung eines Besuchsvisums in ein Arbeitsvisum oder ein Visum für einen abhängigen Aufenthalt ist neu ein Sponsor erforderlich The Ministry of Citizenship, Passports and Residence Affairs recently announced that a sponsor is now required to convert a visit visa into a work visa or a dependent stay visa. The conversion fee is BD 250 (approximately USD 660 / EUR 610 / CHF 580) and the sponsor for the work or dependent stay visa must be the same as the sponsor of the visit visa. Previously, individuals could convert their visit visa without a sponsor for a fee of BD 60 (approximately USD 160 / EUR 145 / CHF 140). The increase in fees and the additional requirement to find a sponsor for the work visa or dependent stay visa is in line with the government's initiative to encourage employers to hire employees from the local community. In addition, this new requirement should allow for better oversight and transparency by the government, reducing potential exploitation of workers. NEWS UPDATE FEBUARY 29,2024 Japan: Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa Plans Japan: Japans Pläne für ein Visum für digitale Nomaden The Japanese Immigration Bureau has announced that it will introduce a six-month visa for digital nomads in March 2024. The final conditions, benefits and details of the application process have not yet been finalized, but the following details have already been announced: The visa will be non-renewable seni and the digital nomad will not be able to apply for another digital nomad visa within six months of leaving Japan The visa holders can apply for a work visa while staying in Japan Eligible applicants must work for an employer outside Japan and have an annual income of at least JPY 10 million (approximately USD 66'500 / EUR 61’300 / CHF 58'500). Digital nomads are not considered residents of Japan and therefore cannot open a bank account or rent long-term accommodation. They are not liable for tax in Japan.
