The site was home to the
Ferrymead Tavern before the
controversial Waters Edge
apartments were built, also by

The two seven-storey

“EVERYONE HAS one hour per
week to spend with a child.”
That’s the motto of Big Brothers
Big Sisters (BBBS) volunteer
Sharon Layton, who has spent
the last nine years giving support
to children and teens in need.
“In 2008 to 2009, almost every
charity was; write a cheque and
give us money. Well, I didn’t
have money. But I had time.”
So, she joined BBBS, where
children and teenagers are
paired up with an adult to spend
an hour together, after school or
on the weekend, for a minimum
of one year.
“The kids get put forward by
a school or a church or similar
because something has happened
in their home life and they’re
falling through the gaps.
“We don’t spend money on
the kids and we don’t interfere.
Anything said doesn’t go back
to their parents, it’s just to be a
stable extra person to trust, talk

Layton’s longest pairing, which
ended last year, was for seven
years and she said her new
pairing of a few months is going
well.
“It’s a great thing if a kid gets
more out of their life. Some
volunteers go to graduations or
21st parties and some kids say
we, BBBS, have saved their lives,”
said Layton.
There have been 2560 matches
of children, teens and adults
within BBBS’ Christchurch
sector across 20 years, with 175
matches in the past year, and 140
current open matches.
Layton is also a part of the
Zonta Club of Christchurch-
Canterbury, which is a global
initiative that works on building
a better world and society for
all girls and women to fully
participate in.
The club is hosting a global
Zonta Rose Day today, which is
a ticketed event, and will have
four guest speakers; Kendall
Flutey, Ella Archer, Cheryl Doig
and Jenny Clark speaking about
gender equality in innovative
and technological industries.
The event starts at 5.30pm at
Richmond Club. Tickets cost

Fresh start for
controversial site

The original plan for a
14-storey apartment building was
scaled back after criticism from
residents because of the low-rise
nature of the neighbourhood.
But the towers were short-lived,
demolished in 2012 after earthquake
damage.
Remediation and other foundational
work is under way on the
site.
WFT Property did not answer
questions from Southern View
as to when the next stage of
construction would start, or
when the development will be
finished.
Called the Tidal View Townhouses,
the approved resource
consent shows four blocks of
three-storey homes.
Two rows of townhouses are
planned, with eight larger units
in front and 12 smaller units
behind.
The resource consent was approved
by the city council in June
last year.
Singh had not been informed of
what was being constructed, but
was pleased about the prospect of
new customers anyway.
The work has caused no issues
for his business, he said.
Owner of nearby Eco Bay
grocery store, Daniil Teplovs, also
hopes the new development will
be good for business.

moving in close by and growing
the community.”

CASHMERE HIGH School
is celebrating their best ever
medal haul at the South Island
secondary schools rowing
competition in Twizel at the
weekend.
The school took home three
gold medals, two silvers and
a bronze, including their first
ever gold medals in the U18 age
bracket.
The girls’ U18 double sculling
pair of Poppy Wyndham and
Abbie Higgins won their event
and joined with Eleri Clare, Thea
Murdie and coxswain Hazel
Bown to win the U18 coxed quad
sculls.
Murdie, Clare, and Bown were
also a part of the team that won
the U16 girls’ coxed quad sculls,
alongside Charlotte Clatworthy
and Reagan Kelly.
The result was a good lead-in
to secondary school rowing’s
premier regatta, the Maadi
Cup which will take place from
March 18-23 at the same venue.
Cashmere rowing coordinator
Adrian Riepen said the success
was down to the progress that
had been made in recent years.
“You can see season after
season, just that general improvement.
“I guess a lot of foundations
have been laid by the coaching
team to get the training
programme right, and then the
buy-in by the rowers.”
He praised the work done by

Cashmere kids can go rowing.”
Cashmere’s rowing programme
is only 10 years old,
and Riepen has been in charge
for the last five of those.
He said they were now at a
level to be competing with private
schools like Rangi Ruru, St
Margaret’s and St Bede’s – historically
rowing powerhouses.
“I think we’re definitely on an
even playing field now, which is
quite humbling considering, you
know, we’re a co-ed school.”
But he said this year’s medal
haul wasn’t unexpected.
“We’ve definitely got a good
depth, and those rowers have
seen success previously.
“Last year’s Maadi (cup) was
the best in school history and we
only had three boys age out.”
