SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS AUTUMN-WINTER 2024 WAiMAte 9
Waimate an enchanting place to stop over
Waimate is synonymous
with beautiful landscapes,
Edwardian architecture, and
wild wallabies.
The rural centre of Waimate
sits between Timaru and
Oamaru. For centuries the
area was a seasonal hunting
camp for Maori; when
European settlers arrived, Waimate
became a saw-milling town. The
majority of the town’s original Edwardian
buildings are still standing, given it a
charmingly historic atmosphere.
These days Waimate is a centre for
livestock farming, berry growing and
Waimate’s tame wallabies
While visiting Waimate, you must visit
the town’s famous Tame Wallaby Park
Sanctuary.
Gwen, the “Wallaby Lady” has
dedicated 46 years to hand raising
and caring for orphan baby wallabies
through to adulthood, mostly brought
to her by hunters.
This requires much commitment as
they need constant warmth and food.
Gwen loves them all as much today as
she did when she got her first one all
those years ago. As visitors meander
among tame wallabies at their own
pace, hand feeding them special
pellets, they are fascinated by the
animal’s gentle nature, thus allowing
you hassle-free time to feel at one with
nature.
The park is located off Highway 82 - 71
Bathgates Road Waimate. Watch out for
the Wallaby Park sign and don’t forget
forestry. It also has
a microclimate that
produces excellent
pinot noir; visit one
of the local boutique
wineries for a taste.
The Waimate is a
place to stop on your
travels and enjoy
food, drink, and views.
This district is memorable for its
population of wild wallabies, which were
originally brought over from Australia
in the 1870s. The wallabies occupy the
Hunters Hills and can be seen up close
at their animal park.
lake ohau lodge – like no other
Nestled like a hidden gem in the wide
open Mackenzie Country is beautiful
Lake Ōhau. As you turn at the big sign
off State Highway 8 and onto the Lake
Ōhau Road, you are presented with
a panorama of peaks straight ahead
and a dramatic “sense of arrival”. After
a 15km drive through golden tussock
lands winding through farms and gentle
hills, the turquoise-blue lake is a total
surprise - so large and unspoiled.
Lake Ōhau Lodge is another 10km drive
around the rugged edge of the lake and
when you arrive at the majestic treelined
driveway, it’s beautiful
and welcoming.
Checking in at the Lodge reception
area, you enter through the rear of
the building and it is not until you go
through to the restaurant to the bar
or to your rooms that the magnificent
vista opens up for you to fully
appreciate.
Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Glen Mary
glacier dominate the expansive
mountain view and on the opposite
side of the lake, the striations, formed
thousands of years ago by the glacier,
are striking. The landscape is intrinsic
to the history of this place, before and
after the first people came here.
Lake Ōhau Lodge opened in the 1950s.
Check out the accommodation and
food packages and select which one
suits your holiday plans. The chefs
are top class and create beautifully
presented meals, catered to your
Cromwell Heritage Precinct
Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked
away on the shores of Lake Dunstan,
at the confluence of the Kawarau and
Clutha arms of the lake.
The schist stone cottages and shops
are tenanted by a range of stores
including an arts collective, printmaker,
goldsmith and a plant expert and maker
of herbal creams and perfumes as well
as unique gift outlets, cafes, fresh fruit
ice cream shop and a cocktail bar as
well as a bike rental store. The precinct
is the official start of the Lake Dunstan
Trail, which runs along the true right
bank of Lake Dunstan down to Clyde
where it links up with the Central Otago
Rail Trail. Every day cyclists from
around New Zealand and the rest of the
world set off on the journey to Clyde,
down the picturesque Cromwell Gorge.
For those setting off from Clyde, the
precinct is the welcome end to their
journey and many take advantage of
the cafes in the precinct for a welcome
rest at the end of their 51km journey.
Displays tell the story of the incredible
1860s gold rush, when sparsely
populated Central Otago was suddenly
inundated with thousands of hopeful
prospectors. Children love the talking
‘locals’ who tell the yarns, life-size
horses and secret alleyways, fairy doors
as well as the ducks, fishing wharf and
picnic areas.
Maniototo Adventure Park
Amongst discerning mountain bikers
throughout the country, Naseby has
long been known for its seemingly
endless, single-track mountain biking
trails through the now forested
goldfields of the late 1800s.
An increasingly compelling drawcard
to the town is the Maniototo Adventure
Park which offers a growing range of
unique experiences for the
whole family.
In the only dedicated indoor curling
rink in the Southern Hemisphere, you
can curl year-round.
The relocation of the Gold Rush luge
(formerly known as Cresta Run, from
Coronet Peak in the 80s and 90s) has
added an exciting dimension to the
park with a gravity-fed ride through the
forest, for speed-seekers of all ages.
For winter thrill-seekers, there is New
Zealand’s only Ice Luge which provides
an exhilarating mix of speed and G
forces as riders rapidly descend the
winding icy track though the forest.
Those seeking a more tranquil activity,
and glide over our outdoor ice rink in a
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS AUTUMN-WINTER 2024 MoerAKi - HAMPden 23
Mouthwatering crayfish
As you’re traveling State Highway 1, you
will not want to miss a stop at the world
famous town of Moeraki. Known for the
Moeraki Boulders, picturesque walks
along the beach and the best seafood
in the country, Moeraki is worth the five
minute detour.
As you drive along the picturesque
viewpoints, you will near the wharf
where the traveller’s favourite food
stop, the FishWife is located. Owned by
fifth generation local John and his wife
Nicky, their food celebrate the variety
of fish John and his fishermen catch
and bring to shore five days a week.
What makes his fish so different
to other fishermen’s and food
establishments? Their difference they
tell us is that no fresh water goes near
their fish. Zero, absolutely zero. Salt
water only, and they have salt water in
the shop, so you won’t taste fish like
this anywhere else as people comment
all the time. The crayfish come straight
off the boat into a circulating tank
where they are all steamed.
A piece of paradise
Just 50m from the beach, Moeraki
Village Holiday Park enjoys an idyllic
setting close to the famous Moeraki
Boulders and colonies of penguins
and seals. Hosts Kristina and Robbie
of accommodation to cater for all
budgets.
As well as 6 self-contained motels, 3
The Scottish history surrounding
Dunedin is worth the time for you to
explore. No matter if you have hours
or days to spend in this historically
enchanting environment, here is a list
of places and attractions you don’t
want to miss in the city centre
of Dunedin.
The Octagon sets the city centre of
Dunedin apart. It is an eight-sided plaza
with a circular one-way carriageway,
bisected by the city’s main street,
and is also the central terminus of
two other main thoroughfares. The
Octagon is predominantly a pedestrian
reserve, with grass and paved features,
and is surmounted by a statue of the
Scottish poet Robert Burns. Several
of Dunedin’s significant buildings and
institutions adjoin the plaza, which is
also a major hub for public transport in
Dunedin, primarily taxi services.
First laid out in 1846, the site was
largely derelict for many years until
the two major early parts of the
city’s settlement (to the north and
south of the Octagon) were linked by
the excavation of Bell Hill. From the
1890s on it rose to prominence as the
city’s central area. The Octagon was
substantially renovated during the
1980s, and is now a centre of the city’s
cafe culture, with many al fresco
dining areas.
The Chinese Gardens is a visitor
favourite or one of the historic buildings
which line the streets and offer a
specific destination, such as the train
station, the Settler’s Museum, or
jail house.
Never short of shopping
establishments you will have your pick
of eateries and so much more, set in
nature’s finest green grass, trees,
and ocean.
Only a matter of blocks from the city
centre is Baldwin Street, which holds
the title of the steepest street in the
world. A visitor favourite.
An exciting fusion of Scottish,
Irish and Welsh gifts.
Now in a new location just 2 minutes walk from the Octagon
towards the iconic Dunedin Railway Station
world of larnach
Castle in Dunedin
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS AUTUMN-WINTER 2024
Larnach Castle is undoubtedly one
of New Zealand’s finest historic
homes and in 2017 this property was
endorsed by Heritage New Zealand as
a ‘Landmark Property’. Not only is this
title a testament to the wealth of its
builder, but to the current owners who
have restored and revitalised it for the
benefit of visitors from around
the world.
William Larnach was a merchant,
Baron, and politician when he built the
castle in 1871 for his wife Eliza. The
finest materials were imported to befit
the opulent grandeur he envisaged. The
3000 square foot ballroom is still used
for weddings and balls and the castle
boasts the only Georgian hanging
staircase in the Southern Hemisphere.
Part of the romance and intrigue of
the castle today is the tragic history of
its owner. Larnach shot himself after
a scandal involving his wife and the
building was subsequently used as a
mental hospital and later to
billet troops.
Larnach Castle is a privately funded
restoration project; years of neglect
finally came to an end when the Barker
family purchased it in 1967.
The restoration continues; made
possible with the entrance fees that are
paid by the guests that visit.
Currently the castle has a ‘Kids go
Free’ offer during the school holidays.
The castle also runs a quiz that can be
completed with the help of parents and
is suitable for all ages.
Accommodation is available at the
castle. There are three styles; Camp
Estate - positioned 500 metres from
the front gate of the castle, offering
luxurious decor and total privacy;
Larnach Lodge, in the grounds of the
castle, has 12 bedrooms with private
facilities, while the Stable Stay is the
perfect choice for budget conscience
travellers.
All house guests may dine in the
restored dining or music room of the
only genuine castle in New Zealand.
Superbly located on the Otago
Peninsula, Larnach Castle captures
the romance and history of the past.
Explore the beautiful gardens, enjoy the
Ballroom café, a game of Pétanque, and
ensure you allow time to explore the
Where nature & history meet
The Royal Albatross Centre, nestled
at the tip of the Otago Peninsula at
Taiaroa Head, Ōtepoti Dunedin is
home to the only mainland colony of
Northern Royal Albatross. It provides
guided tours to the observatory in the
nature reserve, overlooking part of the
nesting area. During the tour, there
is the chance to see adult albatross
incubating eggs or sitting with young
chicks at the nest. The three metre
wingspan is magnificently viewed while
the albatross fly and socialise. Later
in the season, chicks actively practice
using those giant wings.
Hidden beneath the albatross is Fort
Taiaroa, established in the 1880s to
counter the perceived Russian threat.
As part of the Unique Tour, your guide
will walk you through the original
underground tunnels to see the
Armstrong Disappearing Gun and
learn about the human history of
the headland.
The centre includes galleries, giftshop,
café and viewing platforms for all
to enjoy.
SOUTHERN HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS AUTUMN-WINTER 2024
Help us save the
yellow-eyed penguin
The time is very short, and the choice is
very clear, either we take action to save
the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) or face
our children when they ask us where
we were, and what we were doing on
the day the species went extinct. Only
an estimated 1,500 hoiho remain on
the planet, with less than 500 living on
the mainland of New Zealand, making
them the most endangered penguins
in the world. Thankfully, organisations
such as The OPERA – Otago Peninsula
Eco Restoration Alliance – a private eco
reserve located outside Dunedin, are
working to save this treasured species.
Since 1985, The OPERA (formerly
called Penguin Place) has been creating
safe spaces for the hoiho and helping
the species fight back from the brink
of extension. Each year, more than half
the mainland population of hoiho pass
through their rehabilitation centre,
recuperating from malnutrition, injury,
or illness. The organisation’s hard work
is resulting in a 98% success rate at
returning penguins in their care to
the wild.
In addition to hoiho, The OPERA is
also home to kororā (little penguins),
fur seals, sea lions, and numerous
shore and forest birds. These native
animals are monitored by the staff
and available for viewing by guests
participating in one of the many guided
tour options. The proceeds of which
fund the conservation, rehabilitation,
restoration, and education work being
accomplished by the organisation.
Beyond their work to preserve the
native flora and fauna already within
their reserve, The OPERA is developing
a 100-year plan to oversee the
restoration of more than 200 hectares
of previously cleared farmland back
to a lush forest teeming with native
New Zealand wildlife. They are also
dedicated to regenerative business
practises such as removing single use
plastics from the property and working
to repurpose waste into reusable
products, such as crushing glass into
sand. The OPERA is also transitioning
traditional power to solar and windgenerated
energy.
You are invited to join the fight to save
the hoiho and regenerate the Otago
Peninsula. Take a guided tour at The
OPERA, make a cash donation, or
volunteer for our planting and habitat
restoration initiatives.
