A Message From The Desk Of Library Services Director
About a decade ago, the Friends of the Burbank
Public Library provided the initial funding for
the Library to move into the eBook age. Today, that
collection has expanded greatly, received permanent
City Council funding, and grown to 100,000 annual
checkouts.
In a survey conducted in fall 2022, Library patrons
expressed the desire for improvements to the
eCollection, which includes eBooks, eAudiobooks,
eMagazines, streaming video, and streaming music.
The Burbank City Council responded by providing
extra one-time funding in the 2023-24 fiscal year to
build up resources in that collection. As a result, if you
are an eBook reader, you should notice significantly
decreased wait times for items, more selection, and
better ways to recommend titles to us for addition
to the eCollection.
The Library’s eCollection is available day or night via
the Library website, www.burbanklibrary.org, and is
made up primarily of three services:
• Libby, from OverDrive, has eBooks and
eAudiobooks for all ages, including a Spanishlanguage
collection.
• hoopla has eBooks and eAudiobooks, plus
comics, music, and movies for all ages. Items
in hoopla can be checked out by multiple users
at once, so it’s a great option if you are looking
for a book club selection or a title for a reading
assignment.
Schedule an appointment to have your income taxes prepared on a first come, first served basis. From now through April 15, call
818-736-5039 for an appointment. Leave a message clearly identifying yourself, spell your first and last names, and leave your area
code and phone number. Your call will be returned promptly.
Appointments will be seen at the Buena Vista Branch Library, Monday through Thursday, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. The starting fee for
this service is $25.00. The total fee charged will depend on the type of return prepared. Fliers with full information on this service is
available at all Burbank libraries.
Call 818-736-5039 between 9:00am – 12:00pm to make an appointment
Elizabeth Goldman
• Kanopy is a streaming
video service with film
and TV shows, notably the
Criterion Collection, many BBC titles, and a kids
channel.
Haven’t tried a Library eBook? There is no time
like the present to explore the more than 1
million titles available. If you need a Library card,
you can register for one via the Library website
for immediate access to the eCollection. Staff are
available to provide assistance with registration
or using any of the services.
A Friends of the Burbank Public Library Fundraiser

A Message From The President...
Dear Friends,
National Library Week is coming April 7-13, 2024. This annual observance of libraries across America
focuses on the contributions and promotion of the nation’s libraries and librarians.
We know you LOVE YOUR LIBRARY. What better way to celebrate than by stopping by the Burbank
Public Library, either in person or online, and explore all the great services and programs available
to you. FREE. We invite you to join the Friends in promoting library use and support during National
Library Week and all year round.
If I might offer a reading recommendation for April, I encourage you
to pick up Susan Orlean’s superb The Library Book. Award-winning
journalist Susan Orlean has fashioned an exquisite tribute to libraries
and the people who love them. The book recounts the terrible morning
of April 29, 1986 when a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public
Library. What followed was one of the most catastrophic events to
impact both library staff and patrons for years to come. The Library
Book is a compelling read that ties together Los Angeles history, colorful
characters, and the love of books.
“The library is the beating heart that keeps the pulse of a community
alive and thriving.” – Susan Orlean, The Library Book (2018)
“The publicness of the public library is an increasingly rare commodity. It becomes harder all the time to
think of places that welcome everyone and don’t charge any money for that warm embrace.”
– Susan Orlean, The Library Book (2018)
Did you receive books as gifts over the holidays? Do you need to move them out and make
room for more books? Consider donating them to the Friends of the Burbank Public Library.
The Friends operate two used bookstores and schedule two or more Pop-Up book sales a
year. At his time, we are looking for recent fiction books, either hard cover or paperback, to
stock our bookstores. We also accept non-fiction, children’s books, and current magazines.
We cannot accept books that are underlined, written in, or damaged.
Until further notice, the Friends of the Library are unable to accept donations of CDs and
DVDs due to storage concerns. We will announce if and when we resume media donations.
Your generosity in donating gently used materials is always greatly appreciated. Our bookstores
rely on donations by individuals and groups in our community. For more information,
check the library’s website for donation requirements.
