My
Legislative
Aide
The Legislature currently is on recess and will return
just after Easter. I have asked my Legislative Aide,
Teddy Smith, to introduce himself in this issue’s column
and let us know what his responsibilities are.
I am Teddy Smaith, the Legislative Aide for Representative
Dave Dobos. Although I now work for the
State of Ohio, I was born in downtown Chicago, Illinois
in 2001. I spent the first 18 years of my life in
the city and suburbs of Chicago, before deciding to
attend The Ohio State University, where I earned a
bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus
on American Politics. While at OSU, I fell in love with
the city of Columbus and knew I wanted to spend
the beginning of my post-grad career here. So, I applied
to be a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of
Representatives. After interviewing with a few Representatives,
I was offered the position by Representative
Dobos and accepted without a second
thought.
I’ve now been working for Rep. Dobos and the
House since October 2023, and the position has
provided me with great experience in my field. My
responsibilities focus on helping the Representative
serve his constituents as best he can. Many are clerical
duties, such as following up on constituent requests,
setting up and preparing him for meetings,
communicating event invitations, and keeping track
of his schedule. I also assist him with the legislative
process. For example, when working on a new
piece of legislation, I am typically the main point of
contact for any organizations or constituents who
may be advising the Representative on the bill. I
also keep track of any changes the bill may need before
it can be sent to the Clerk’s office and placed in
a committee. In addition to legislative duties, Representative
Dobos’ position as Vice Chair of the
House Transportation Committee means I hold the
title of Vice Clerk. As Vice Clerk, I am responsible for
taking the minutes at every Transportation Committee
meeting, keeping a record of every bill and testimony
that passes through the committee, and
helping the Clerk (the legislative aide of the committee
chair) with any committee-related issues that
may arise. Being the Legislative Aide for Rep. Dobos
has been a rewarding challenge for me, and I could
not have asked for a more fulfilling opportunity so
quickly after graduating. If you ever have any questions,

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML)
has partnered with Dawes Arboretum to
make a select number of tickets available
for library customers to check out for free.
Ten Dawes Arboretum Culture Passes
are now available at each of CML’s 23 locations.
Each pass admits up to six individuals
of any age to visit the arboretum within
two weeks.
CML has also recently partnered with
ProMusica to make a select number of tickets
available for library customers to check
out for free.
Two ProMusica Culture Passes are now
available at each of CML’s locations. Each
pass admits two individuals of any age to
attend a performance of ProMusica’s 2024
season. Once obtained, the pass can be
redeemed by calling 614-464-0066 ext. 101
in advance, or at the theater box office up
to one hour before each scheduled performance.
CML offers its cardholders free admission
to select central Ohio cultural institutions.
The Culture Pass program enables
CML customers to borrow passes just as
they would a book: using their library card.
This onetime pass, which must be checked
out in person, grants customers limited
free access to institutions that would otherwise
charge admission fees.
CML piloted the program in 2018, offering
Culture Passes to Franklin Park
Conservatory and the Wexner Center for
the Arts. Since then, CML has worked to
expand the number of participating organizations.
