A number of exotic insects made a visit 

to the Hilltop YMCA. On March 19, the 

recreation center welcomed The Ohio 

State University’s mobile bug zoo onto 

its premises as a part of its educational 

outreach programming. Organized by 

youth experience director Latoyia 

Mosley, the BUGmobile provided curious 

children and adults with an up close 

and personal look at a number of live 

insects such as the Arizona blonde 

tarantula, the Blue Death Feigning 

Beetle, the Bold Jumping spider, the 

Giant Hairy Desert scorpion and the 

Madagascar hissing cockroach. Only a 

small handful of these misunderstood 

insects were able to be touched and 

held by the audience, but those who 

dared to allow the cockroaches to crawl 

over their hands came away with a better 

appreciation for the creatures. “This 

is my first time holding a cockroach,” 

said Maddie Graham (pictured here), the 

area child care director at the YMCA of 

Central Ohio, “and I have to say that it 

has been quite a fun experience.” The 

BUGmobile’s outreach and insectary 

health technician said that is the purpose 

of the mobile bug zoo program. 

“We want to open up people’s minds and 

show them that the world is a lot less 

scary when you learn that these insects 

are not out to get you,” said Gina Hill. 

“The world becomes a lot bigger and a 

lot less hostile once you become friends 

with them.”

The Columbus City Council is currently 

preparing its annual capital improvements 

budget and capital improvements plan. 

The process of putting together the massive 

multi-year funding project involves 

engagement with the local area commissions 

to solicit ideas on which infrastructure 

projects the community believes 

should be prioritized by the city. 

In order to assist the city officials during 

the engagement process, the Greater 

Hilltop Area Commission recently 

announced the launch of a survey which 

will allow residents to give input on how 

their neighborhood could benefit from 

investments to the infrastructure. 

“It is incredibly important that we get 

the community involved in this process,” 

said commissioner Dean Smith. “I think a 

budget, any budget, should reflect the community’s 

values and I think the best way to 

capture those values is through community 

input.”

Prairie Township open house 

The Prairie Township Trustees adopted an exterior property 

maintenance code in 2022. This code was geared toward ensuring 

that commercial properties and apartment complexes were being 

property maintained. 

The trustees would like to modify the exterior property maintenance 

code to include all residential properties throughout the 

township. The trustees have been working with the zoning department 

and have held two special meetings to discuss potential 

changes. Now they would like to hear from the community. 

The township will host an open house at 6 p.m. March 27 at the 

Prairie Township Community Center, 5955 West Broad St. to discuss

SWCS superintendent to retire

South-Western City School’s superintendent says 

he is ready to retire after leading the district for nearly 

two decades. 

On March 11, Dr. Bill Wise told the board of education 

he would step down from his position prior to the 

expiration of his current contract, which runs through 

2026. He will remain as superintendent until Aug. 1, 

2024. 

Wise said it has been both “a blessing” and “an 

honor” to have led the district. 

“It has truly been a blessing to be here,” he said. “I 

always like to say that South-Western is one of the 

biggest small places you’ll ever find because it is a family 

in and of itself. We have had so many talented individuals 

come through here that have laid the foundation 

for what this school community is and it has just 

been a real honor to have been able to serve here and 

hopefully, in some small way, have contributed to 

making it a better place.” 

Wise began his career in education in 1990 as a 

mathematics teacher at Tiffin Columbian High School 

in Tiffin, Ohio. Within seven years, he was selected to 

serve as principal of the school. He remained in that 

role until coming to the SWCSD in 2002. 

Initially hired as the assistant superintendent of 

curriculum, he was promoted to deputy superintendent 

in 2006. The following year, he was selected by 

the board to serve as the district superintendent. 

During his tenure, he oversaw a massive and multiphased 

construction project that built 13 new elementary 

schools, four new middle schools, one new high 

school and various other site development projects. He 

also oversaw the implementation of full day kindergarten 

and the creation of the Accelerated Learning 

Center, an in-house college preparatory program for 

high school students to pursue college credit and earn 

associate degrees in two or three year pathways. 

The district experienced its highest graduation rate 

in district history under his tenure and there has been 

no new operating levy on the ballot since 2009. The district 

does not expect there to be a new operating levy 

on the ballot for the foreseeable future due to a strong 

financial forecast. 

Wise said that while he is proud of all of the strides 

the district has made since he has been here, he cannot 

take all of the credit for it. 

“I am very proud and very pleased by what has been 

accomplished at the district since 2007, but I don’t take 

any credit in that,” he said. “I have benefited greatly 

from the talented people in this district and it has just 

been my honor to be a part of that process.” 

Although his retirement is scheduled for Aug. 1 

2024, Wise will not officially leave the district until 

Aug. 31, 2025. At the meeting, the board announced 

that Wise would serve as the special assistant to the 

new superintendent to help with the transition 

process. 

“I wanted to take on this role because I felt it was 

important that they be able to understand the logistics 

of the district and be able to move through those 

spaces as they take the reins of this district,” he said. 

“I want to make sure that I am able to support them, 

and I want to make sure that connections are made 

with various community groups, elected officials, and 

other partners that we have throughout the greater 

Columbus area.” 

The board said they were thankful for his decision 

to stay and assist the new superintendent. 

“We have been so blessed with Bill being here and 

knowing the ins and outs (of the district) and that is 

what is so nice about him staying around so we can 

have that smooth transition,” said board president 

Chris Boso. “That is going to be a great thing for that 

new prospect since he or she might not have that experience.” 

When asked what the board is looking for in a candidate 

for superintendent, Boso said they are looking 

for someone who will represent the community and 

someone who will not be overwhelmed by the size of 

the district, which is the third largest in central Ohio 

and the sixth largest in the state. 

Over the next several days, the district will reach 

out to a variety of organizations that assist school 

boards with the recruitment of superintendents. The 

board said they would like their pool of candidates to 

come from inside and outside of the state.


Recycling event at Westland Area Library 

To celebrate Earth Day, the Westland Area Library 

will host a battery recycling event from 2 to 4 p.m. 

April 21 at 4740 West Broad St. Participants can drop 

off any type of battery except vehicle batteries. This 

includes disposable and rechargeable batteries, cellphone 

batteries, and packs from power tools. The 

Recycling Guy will also be on hand to take items not 

accepted by Rumpke Recycling. The library has a list

The survey went live on the commission’s official 

website and on its social media pages late last month. 

It is a nine question survey that asks residents which 

infrastructure projects should be prioritized in regard 

to public utilities, public service, and amenities at local 

parks and recreation centers. 

So far, only a dozen residents have responded to the 

survey. 

The commission said it will reach out to area businesses 

and organizations for their ideas on funding 

priorities related to infrastructure investments. The 

nine committees of the commission will also offer their 

own feedback on priorities related to infrastructure 

investments. 

Commissioner Joe Argiro, who is the chair of the 

human services and education committee, said their 

members have been conducting virtual scans of the 

infrastructure around the schools. 

“We are looking for places where there might not be

He encouraged residents to do their own survey of 

the neighborhoods, jotting down ways they think it 

could be improved through additional street lighting, 

curb replacements, or other infrastructure investments. 

“They could be little things which could improve the 

whole thing,” said Argiro. 

The survey can be accessed through the commission’s 

website at cbusareacommissions.org/greaterhilltop 

or through its social media pages at Facebook 

and Instagram. The commission has not yet heard 

from the city as to when they would like the results of 

the survey to be submitted. A city official who attended 

the March 5 GHAC meeting said it would likely be in 

April or May.

The South-Western Career Academy 

will receive financial assistance from the 

state as they prepare to expand its programs 

for the next school year. 

Earlier this month, Ohio Governor Mike 

DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted 

announced the recipients of the Career 

Technical Education Equipment Grant 

Program which will help schools purchase 

up-to-date equipment so they can better 

prepare students to be career-ready upon 

graduation. 

“New technologies are transforming the 

economy, and to prepare students for those 

careers, we need to invest in the machinery, 

technologies, and training that educators 

need to prepare students for the growing 

number of careers in the Ohio economy,” 

said Husted. “Through these investments, 

thousands more students will graduate 

high school career-ready — prepared 

for careers without college debt and providing 

Ohio employers with the talent they 

need to compete globally.”

Christine Galvin, the director of career 

technical education, said student interest 

for the program has “been very positive.” 

“At the close of our February SWCA 

application window, student interest in the 

HVAC program has been very positive 

across the four high schools with over 50 

applications submitted by incoming junior 

students,” she said. 

The career academy will begin offering 

the HVAC program at the start of the 2024- 

2025 school year.

The SWCA has offered the Pre-Nursing 

program since its inception, but recently 

made the decision to expand due to student 

demand. 

“From a programming standpoint, our 

traditional Pre-Nursing course has been 

capped at 48 students (24 juniors and 24 

seniors) resulting in prospective applicants 

regrettably being waitlisted to get into the 

program,” said Galvin. “Beyond this student 

interest to drive the need, we know 

our community has a high need for nurses, 

as currently, the top three jobs listed on the 

Ohio Top Jobs list for Central Ohio are 

Home Health Aides, Registered Nurses, 

and Personal and Home Care Aides. When 

we saw a pathway to expand student access 

and training for students to receive their 

STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) credential 

while also meeting the needs of our community, 

a plan was developed to meet those 

needs head on.” 

According to the district, 107 students 

applied for the 2024-2025 Pre-Nursing program. 

The 2024-2025 courses of Pre- 

Nursing enrollees will see 48 juniors and 

24 seniors. The 2025-2026 courses of Pre- 

Nursing enrollees will then expand to 

encompass 48 juniors and 48 seniors, doubling 

the current output in 2024 from 48 

enrollees to 96 enrollees by the fall of 2025. 

Funding for the Career Technical 

Education Equipment Grant Program was 

included in the 2024-2024 state operating 

budget in addition to $200 million for the 

Career Technical Construction Program. 

The state will distribute more than $67.7 

million to the 56 schools that were named 

as the recipients of this year’s Career 

Technical Education Equipment Grant.

Free eclipse 

glasses at CML 

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) 

will offer central Ohioans free eclipse 

glasses beginning March 18 ahead of the 

near total solar eclipse on April 8. 

Glasses will be handed out at all 23 

CML locations while supplies last and will 

be limited to four per person. Those interested 

are encouraged to call ahead at 614- 

645-2275 to check availability. 

Also beginning March 18, all 23 CML 

locations will offer free COSI-supplied 

solar kits, each of which includes a pair of 

eclipse glasses and activities that customers 

can do at home. Due to the items 

included, the kits will only be available to 

adults 18 and older. Limit four per adult, 

while supplies last. 

Central Ohioans are also invited to 

attend a special eclipse watch party on 

Monday, April 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Main 

Library, 96 S. Grant Ave. Representatives 

from COSI will join CML staff on the front 

lawn for science activities before and after 

the eclipse. 

At 3:10 p.m. on April 8, central Ohio 

will experience a near total solar eclipse — 

with totality lasting around 3 to 4 minutes. 

Safe glasses are essential for viewing this 

celestial phenomenon.

Club aims to empower women

A new organization in Grove City is 

working to build a better world for local 

women. 

The Zonta Club of Grove City is part of 

a global organization of experienced professionals 

who provide service and advocacy 

to empower women and girls. 

“Our local Zonta Club of Grove City is 

focused on empowering local women with 

service projects and educational opportunities,” 

said Joyce Combs, who lives in Grove 

City and serves on the Club Creators 

Committee where she works to create new 

clubs in Ohio, West Virginia, and 

Kentucky. 

“I moved to Grove City two years ago 

and was so impressed with the community 

that I thought this would be a great location 

to start a new club,” she said. 

Combs wants women in the Grove City 

area to know that there are resources 

available to them if they’re looking for 

ways to empower other women or need 

help themselves. 

“We are a global organization of experienced 

professionals providing service and 

advocacy to empower women and girls,” 

Combs said. 

The international Zonta organization 

approved the Grove City club to begin 

forming and providing service projects to 

the community last year. The local club 

should have its official charter status in 

the next few weeks, Combs said. 

In just under a year, volunteers with the 

organization have served the Mid-Ohio 

Food Collective, donated Valentine gift 

bags for children staying with their mothers 

at Amethyst, and collaborated with the 

community to collect feminine hygiene 

items, gloves and socks for women and 

girls at the Van Buren Homeless Shelter. 

The organization is also planning a 

“Spring Cleaning Collection” to support 

various organizations that help vulnerable 

women and girls. 

“During the month of April we are asking 

friends and neighbors for various items 

that can be donated to organizations in 

central Ohio such as Sanctuary Night, a 

safe haven for sexually-exploited women; 

Maryhaven, an addiction recovery center 

for women; and Lighthouse, a domestic violence 

shelter,” Combs said. 

Items of need include gently-used clothing 

for women returning to the workforce, 

winter coats, scarves, gloves, bath towels, 

dish towels, and gently-used coffee cups 

and drinking glasses. 

Donations can be dropped off at

Broadway, or the Grove City Visitors 

Center, 3995 Broadway, Suite 100.

“In the local community, we focus on 

three main points - providing service, advocacy 

initiatives and scholarship/educational 

opportunities for women and girls,” 

Combs said. “We also support legislation to 

protect vulnerable women and girls, such 

as from domestic violence or human trafficking.” 

In recent years, Zonta clubs have 

worked with legislators to encourage the 

passage of bills on human trafficking and 

domestic violence. The Grove City club 

invited Laura Lanese, a former State 

Representative and Grove City council 

woman, to speak about Ohio’s Ending 

Child Marriage, an initiative to raise the 

minimum age for marriage in Ohio.

to the Zonta Club of Grove City can email

“Are you someone who wants to build a 

better world for women in Grove City? 

Zonta Club Grove City is an excellent 

opportunity to do just that,” Combs said. 

“Members build long-lasting friendships,

an empowered network.”



Columbus awarded for leadership in cultural diversity 

The city of Columbus has been named 

the winner of the National League of Cities 

(NLC) 2024 City Cultural Diversity 

Awards, which celebrates leadership in 

developing effective programs to improve 

cultural diversity within local communities. 

Specifically, the Columbus Housing 

Strategy was showcased as an example of 

broad collaboration to advance equity and 

affordability, advancing numerous regional 

efforts and initiatives to improve quality of 

life for lower- and middle-income families, 

people of color and older residents who disproportionately 

experience the hardships 

stemming from housing scarcity, and rising 

rental and real estate costs. 

“If you work in central Ohio, you should 

be able to afford to live in central Ohio,” 

said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. 

“We launched the Columbus Housing 

Strategy to not only make our community 

more affordable for more families, but to 

strengthen the diversity and vitality of all 

our neighborhoods. We’re moving with a 

sense of urgency and purpose to get this 

done because we know that our future is 

bright if and only if everyone is a part of it.” 

Submissions for the program were 

grouped by population and evaluated for 

creativity, community impact and program 

scope. Columbus received its award in the 

category for cities with populations greater 

than 500,001. With more than 40 applicants 

in contention for the 2024 awards, 

Columbus was one of only four communities 

selected. 

“Congratulations to the winning municipalities 

of NLC’s Cultural Diversity 

Awards,” said NLC President David 

Sander. “This year’s award holds special 

significance as NLC celebrates 100 years of 

strengthening cities, towns and villages 

across the country.” 

Winners were recognized at NLC’s 2024 

Congressional City Conference in 

Washington, D.C., on March 11.

Ohio governor launches Suicide Prevention Plan 

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced 

the 2024-2026 Suicide Prevention Plan for 

the state, reinforcing a commitment to 

eliminating obstacles for families and individuals 

grappling with suicide. 

“The heartbreak of losing a family member 

to suicide is a pain that cuts deep, leaving 

behind a void that words can’t fully capture,” 

said DeWine. “This plan will bring 

about a system-wide commitment to reduce 

suicides and encourage communities to 

work collectively to foster understanding 

and destigmatize mental health challenges.” 

The plan aims to promote life-saving 

strategies statewide. The governor’s 

RecoveryOhio initiative partnered with the 

Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation to 

spearhead the development of this comprehensive 

document, incorporating input 

from more than 30 private and public 

organizations. 

Key components of the plan include raising 

public awareness, enhancing access to 

timely data, expanding opportunities for 

healthcare access, and providing support 

for families coping with the loss of a loved 

one to suicide. It underscores the importance 

of collaborative efforts with behavioral 

healthcare providers, employers, 

healthcare systems, schools, and community 

organizations to stem the increasing 

rates of suicides. 

According to the Ohio Department of 

Health, there were 1,766 suicides in Ohio 

in 2021, an increase of 8 percent, from the 

previous year. That number is below the 

10-year high in the state of 1,836 deaths in 

2018. 

In November, 2023, the Center for 

Disease Control released a report that the 

United States set a record for the number 

of suicide deaths with nearly 50,000 people 

dying by suicide in 2022. The national 

report indicated that middle aged adults 

account for the most suicides, while suicide 

numbers in pre-teens and teens had 

decreased. 

“We are grateful for Governor DeWine’s 

leadership and focus on improving the lives 

of individuals who are struggling with 

mental health and suicide,” said Tony 

Coder, executive director of the Ohio 

Suicide Prevention Foundation. “We 

believe that suicide prevention is a health 

issue that anyone can be an active participant 

in and we are grateful that this plan 

is a strategy that can help more individuals 

seek care.” 

RecoveryOhio works to provide a full 

continuum of care to all of Ohio. 

RecoveryOhio’s goals include creating a 

system to help those struggling with mental 

illness, and offer direction for the state’s 

prevention and education efforts.

that educates, advocates, and builds connections 

and support for individuals, families, 

and communities to prevent suicide.

Once upon a time, the stories in books 

and movies were filled with meek young 

women, usually a princess or royal of some 

sort, trapped in a bad situation. Sad, alone, 

and defenseless, she would sit atop her 

tower and wait for a strapping man to come 

and save her, whisking her off to a happily 

ever after. 

Nowadays, the stories in books and 

movies are filled with subversions to the 

old fairy tale cliché of the damsel in distress. 

Rather than conveying a message 

that one should sit around and wait to be 

saved, they encourage the bright young 

lasses to pick up a sword (literal or 

metaphorical) and fight to control their 

own destiny. Although these stories have 

become something of a cliché in and of 

themselves, it is never a bad thing to be 

reminded that one can use their wit and 

skill to get out of situations they do not 

want to be in. The latest offering of this 

worthy message comes from Netflix and a 

young star who knows something about 

perseverance. 

In the cheekily titled “Damsel,” Millie 

Bobby Brown plays Elodie, the sweet and 

kind elder daughter of Lord Bayford (Ray 

Winstone). She presides over a community 

in which there is not enough to go around; 

the harsh landscape makes the ground less 

fertile and her subjects often struggle to 

find enough food or heat. To try to make up 

for the lack, she scavenges the forest for 

food and lumber to make sure that her family 

and her people do not starve or freeze to 

death. 

Living in such a barren place can make 

one desperate, which is why her father is so 

willing to turn her over to a suitor from a 

faraway land. “They are offering us food 

and riches beyond our dreams,” Lord 

Bayford tells his daughter. Despite her 

reluctance to marry — she wants nothing 

more than to sail the high seas in search of 

a grand adventure — she is willing to do so 

because of her loyalty to her family and to 

her people. 

Elodie is immediately struck by her new 

home; the air is warm and clean, the land 

is fertile and bountiful, and the homes and 

palaces are wrapped in luxury. The only 

thing more impressive is the fact that her 

suitor, Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) is 

close to her age, handsome, and has a full 

head of lush hair. 

The only thing that truly gives Elodie 

and her stepmother pause is the fierce 

Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) who is regal 

and remote, rebuffing any attempt at 

friendship from either pair. Lady Bayford 

tells Elodie she does not have to go through 

with the marriage, but the young woman 

knows what she must do: wed, start a family, 

and perhaps work toward a happily 

ever after with her handsome but bland 

husband-to-be. 

After the wedding, Elodie is taken to the 

mountainside where a strange ceremony is 

being conducted. The guests are all adored 

with masks a la “Eyes Wide Shut” and her 

mother-in-law stands at the altar with a 

dagger that is to be used to mix the blood of 

the newlyweds. Although Elodie is unsure 

and a little freaked out at this point, she 

goes with the flow, trusting her husband 

and new family to do right by her. But then 

Prince Henry sweeps her off her feet and 

casually throws her into a chasm where a 

fire-breathing dragon with a big grudge 

against the royal family of Aurea awaits. 

Up until this point, this movie was looking 

more like “Damsel: Cinderella” than 

anything else. But when she is thrown into 

the lair it turns into “Damsel: Die Hard” as 

Elodie tries to escape from the exceptionally 

well-designed dragon, played with great 

menace by the smoky voiced Shohreh 

Aghdashloo. At times, it often has the feel 

of a video game where Elodie faces one 

obstacle after another, making some 

progress but not enough. Brown is on her 

own for a long stretch of time, and she is 

quite effective at alternating fear and 

determination, using wit and skill to try to 

survive the dragon lurking around every 

dark corner. 

The one major 

complaint I had 

about this dark fantasy 

written by Dan 

Mazeau and directed 

by Juan Carlos 

Fresnadillo is that it 

does not feel as if there are any stakes at 

play. Although the heroine is being stalked 

and harmed by a dragon, we know that no 

real harm will come to her so it lacks that 

urgency and investment needed to sell a 

fantasy. 

Oftentimes while watching “Damsel,” I 

found myself wishing that it could have 

had a traditional theatrical release, 

because the settings are filled with enticing 

details that bolster some of the weaknesses 

of the screenplay and story. But even on 

the smaller screen, the female-led and 

rage-filled take on the traditional fairy tale 

is ultimately worthy of a watch. 

“Damsel” is now streaming on Netflix.

This photo features the Beverlee Drive In restaurant and Miles’ West Broad Drive-In 

Theater, then located at 4050 West Broad Street near Phillipi Road. The theater 

opened in September 1947 and closed in 1970. The Beverlee provided dine-in, callahead, 

and drive-in service in the 1950s and 1960s where the servers came to a 

patron’s car for his order. Nine Beverlee’s locations graced Columbus at the height 

of their popularity. They featured the “Big Bev,” a 50-cent monster burger, and touted 

themselves as a great place to get a late evening snack after playing bridge. Buckeye 

Raceway, which features indoor electric European karting, is located at the address

My 

Legislative 

Aide 

The Legislature currently is on recess and will return 

just after Easter. I have asked my Legislative Aide, 

Teddy Smith, to introduce himself in this issue’s column 

and let us know what his responsibilities are. 

I am Teddy Smaith, the Legislative Aide for Representative 

Dave Dobos. Although I now work for the 

State of Ohio, I was born in downtown Chicago, Illinois 

in 2001. I spent the first 18 years of my life in 

the city and suburbs of Chicago, before deciding to 

attend The Ohio State University, where I earned a 

bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus 

on American Politics. While at OSU, I fell in love with 

the city of Columbus and knew I wanted to spend 

the beginning of my post-grad career here. So, I applied 

to be a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of 

Representatives. After interviewing with a few Representatives, 

I was offered the position by Representative 

Dobos and accepted without a second 

thought. 

I’ve now been working for Rep. Dobos and the 

House since October 2023, and the position has 

provided me with great experience in my field. My 

responsibilities focus on helping the Representative 

serve his constituents as best he can. Many are clerical 

duties, such as following up on constituent requests, 

setting up and preparing him for meetings, 

communicating event invitations, and keeping track 

of his schedule. I also assist him with the legislative 

process. For example, when working on a new 

piece of legislation, I am typically the main point of 

contact for any organizations or constituents who 

may be advising the Representative on the bill. I 

also keep track of any changes the bill may need before 

it can be sent to the Clerk’s office and placed in 

a committee. In addition to legislative duties, Representative 

Dobos’ position as Vice Chair of the 

House Transportation Committee means I hold the 

title of Vice Clerk. As Vice Clerk, I am responsible for 

taking the minutes at every Transportation Committee 

meeting, keeping a record of every bill and testimony 

that passes through the committee, and 

helping the Clerk (the legislative aide of the committee 

chair) with any committee-related issues that 

may arise. Being the Legislative Aide for Rep. Dobos 

has been a rewarding challenge for me, and I could 

not have asked for a more fulfilling opportunity so 

quickly after graduating. If you ever have any questions,
