EDITORIAL
Dear Readers,
Business results have been notably mixed
this year so far, but this has provided us with
an excellent opportunity to see if the business
model under which we operate is robust.
In a way, it has been similar to the stress
tests which governments apply to the banking
sector, and I am pleased to say that, overall,
our system is working well.
Everyone who works at and with UnitCargo
knows that our company is built on stable
values because we live and communicate
them every day.
One of our core values is diversity, which we
explore in more detail in this issue. We define
diversity not only in terms of the internationality
of our employees, but also in terms
of the diversity of our customers and drivers.
We don‘t want one customer to dominate our
business and make us dependent, which ultimately
would not be good for us or the customer.
That said, we evaluate this aspect regularly
and take action when necessary. So,
while business has suffered globally, we have
been able to have a productive year. What
have we learned from this?
If you live your values authentically, you will
achieve sustainable success in your business.
with orange regards,
Marketing and Project Management
In the dynamic world of road transportation,
establishing and maintaining
strong customer relationships is
vital. Approaching our 20th anniversary, UnitCargo
has reached a moment in its development that
demands strategic planning for the next growing
phase. In early 2023, we made a commitment to
strengthen our existing customer relationships
while actively pursuing new customers through
international networking events. Our goal was to
use face-to-face meeting platforms for establishing
quality connections and partnerships.
Like in other industries, transport-related events
came to a halt when the Covid-19 pandemic began
in March 2020. The sector quickly came up
with ways to work around the lockdowns and travel
restrictions by moving meetings to the virtual
world. However, the lack of big industry events
such as fairs and conferences had an impact on
the logistics business.
New partnerships require good starting places,
and industry fairs are excellent for deal-making,
direct marketing, and showcasing new products.
It is difficult for virtual gatherings to replicate many
of the benefits that have made live events so popular.
While digital communication has its merits,
face-to-face interactions remain invaluable. That
is why UnitCargo strives to build a personal, longterm
relationship with its customers, not just be an
anonymous supplier with an Excel spreadsheet.
Industry fairs
UnitCargo Team on fair transport logistic in Munich
In spring, we were part of the International Transport
& Logistic Fair in Munich, Germany (9-12 May,
2023), an event that gathered over 2,400 companies
representing 120 countries across the globe.
It was great to see old friends and was the perfect
place to promote our intermodal service to a
wide variety of producers. Over 200 partners and
potential customers attended UnitCargo‘s stand
throughout the four days of the event.
This autumn, UnitCargo was present at Trans-
Logistica Fair in Bucharest, Romania (19-21 September,
2023). Romania presents an exciting
growth prospect for the logistics industry. Our 10
years of expertise and excellent reputation in the
Romanian market positioned us as a trusted advisor
for local producers seeking to ensure their
flows within European markets.
This event also brought valuable insights into the
Black Sea market dynamics.
in Warsaw (7-9 November, 2023).
The event welcomes more than 300 logistic companies
and 9,000 visitors. UnitCargo will have a
new platform to increase its visibility and recognition
in the Polish market, where we are looking to
Diversity Mean
for UnitCargo?
Ines Schoberwalter
Head of Quality Management
Odeta Diendorfer
Marketing and Project Management
Having a diverse customer base is essential for
UnitCargo’s business growth, adaptability, and resilience.
It requires the ability to offer tailored solutions
and continuously manage the challenges
coming from the unique needs of each customer.
Diversity is a central value to live by here at Unit-
Cargo, and it is deeply integrated into our corporate
strategy, thus contributing to each of our decisions.
Having a diversity of customers in logistics refers to
serving a wide range of clients with varying needs,
industries, and requirements within the supply
chain management. This diversity can encompass
different business sizes, industries, geographical
locations, and types of cargo.
6 7

UNITCARGO BUSINESS
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
Business Sizes
A diverse customer base includes
clients from small startups
to large multinational corporations.
Each size category
brings its own set of logistical
challenges and requirements.
Small businesses might need
cost-effective solutions, while
larger enterprises may require
complex supply chain management.
UnitCargo’s portfolio
contains both small-sized
companies and multinational
corporations.
Industries
We serve clients across various
industries, such as manufacturing,
packaging, agriculture,
chemicals, building materials,
automotive, and more. Each
industry has specific transportation
and distribution needs,
regulatory considerations, and
unique challenges that must
be addressed.
Geographical Locations
A diverse customer base spans
different geographic regions.
This variation introduces complexities
related to customs
regulations, cross-border shipping,
transportation modes,
and regional market trends.
Types of Cargo
Different customers require
transportation services for various
types of cargo, ranging
from perishable goods and hazardous
materials to oversized
equipment. Handling diverse
cargo types demands specialized
expertise and equipment.
Different Services
A diverse customer base may
necessitate an offer of a variety
of services to cater to different
needs. This could include
intermodal, road forwarding,
warehousing, and more.
Customization
With a diverse customer base,
customization becomes crucial.
UnitCargo tailors the solutions
to meet the unique
demands of each customer,
ensuring the most efficient and
cost-effective service.
Risk Distribution
Relying on a variety of customers
can help mitigate risk.
If one industry experiences a
downturn, the impact on Unit-
Cargo’ business is reduced
because it is not overly dependent
on a single sector. We
have seen that during the CO-
VID-19 pandemic, the diverse
customer base enhanced Unit-
Cargo’s resilience. We are less
susceptible to disruptions caused
by changes in the market
fluctuations affecting specific
industries.
Diversity in employees
Diversity at UnitCargo is also
reflected in the background of
employees in the UnitCargo
Group. More than 20 different
languages are currently spoken
in our offices, and our employees
come from more than 40
different countries.
In addition, various measures
have been taken internally on
the subject of different working
models, such as Home Office
options and various working
time models, like flexitime or
part-time models. This shows
that the topic of diversity is not
just a word for us but is lived
out in our daily business.
Finally, for us, diversity means,
among other things, women as
essential part of UnitCargo’s
workforce, and women in management
positions. The overall
female quota for the entire
UnitCargo Group is presently
55% and 75% of our top management
is currently women.
2 out of 5 branch managers of
UnitCargo are also women.
Unitcargo Slovakia was established in
2006 in Nové Zámky, a city of 38,000
inhabitants that covers an area of 73
square kilometres. It is the largest city of the Danubian
Lowland and a cultural centre of the regions of
Dolné Ponitrie and Central Pannonia.
Its surroundings are unique because all five of
Slovakia’s rivers flow through the district: Danube,
Hron, Nitra, Ipeľ and, peripherally, the river Váh.
It was originally established in the 16th centu-
ry as a fortress of the river Nitra to defend
against Turkish invaders on the orders of
archbishop Pavel Várdai based in Esztergom,
a city which today stands just across the river
Danube in Hungary. Though initially made of
wood, it was soon converted into a massive
stone fortification known as Novum Castellum
or Castellum Novum. When the builder
Fridrich Žerotín handed over the new
castle on the 2nd of October 1580 to the
first commander, it was the most modern
renaissance fortress at the time.
UNITCARGO BUSINESS
Hana‘s
Handicrafts
Hana Hola
Head of Accounting, Slovakia
For those of you who don’t know me,
my name is Hana, and I’m Head of
Accounting in Slovakia, based in Nové
Zámky. I have been a part of the UC family since
2016. First, I was a ferry manager, then worked my
way up to accounting, where I found my purpose
and the opportunity to further explore my potential.
“My first creations were
necklaces and earrings for
my dolls, which I made out
of colourful wires, which I
collected on the street after
electricity cables were
replaced in our village”.
Now, I have a team of great coworkers
supporting me in my
growth. We learn from each
other and that makes us better
and stronger. Apart from my
work, I have one true passion:
handicrafts.
Jewellery making
Ever since I was a little girl, I was obsessed
with everything that sparkles. I
was introduced to the world of jewellery
making when I was about 7 years old. My
first creations were necklaces and earrings for my
dolls, which I made out of colourful wires, which
I collected on the street after electricity cables
were replaced in our village. My passion grew
even more while I was on maternity leave and had
more time to be creative. I wanted to explore new
techniques and materials. Luckily, we live in the internet
era and have endless sources of inspiration.
I fell in love with bead embroidery, tiny little beads
and stone cabochons, which, when combined,
can create something truly beautiful. The size of
the beads starts at 1mm, and some pieces may
take dozens of hours to be sewn together. It takes
a lot of time to create them, a lot of passion and
patience, but real art pieces are created in the end.
As I was exploring new materials and techniques,
I moved on from jewellery to making wreaths and,
since Christmas is my favourite time of year, seasonal
decorations for the holiday period. When I
create something new, I’m really happy. I like things
that aren’t ordinary and have a soul, so I don’t rely
on commercial products offered in shops. I prefer
to make my own unique accessories.
I still have a head full of new ideas waiting to be
brought to life.
Sustainability at UnitCargo:
CO2 Calculator
Ines Schoberwalter
Head of Quality Management
UnitCargo’s long-term goal is to become
the first CO2-neutral spedition
company, which is underlined by
our strategy: “We believe in a fossil-free logistics
world”. UnitCargo’s sustainability approach is based
on our solid environmental management
system, certified according to ISO 14001 and our
Ecovadis Assessment. By extending our services
with intermodal solutions in 2022 through the use
of EUR 5 and EUR 6 class trucks and the optimization
of our transportation flows, we can ensure the
reduction of our CO2 footprint.
In the past couple of years, the demand for standardized
reporting of CO2 footprints has grown
stronger. Therefore, UnitCargo has decided to
take matters in its own hand and create, in cooperation
with two Universities, a CO2 footprint
calculator, which fits exactly to our needs and our
customers’ demands. This now enables us to calculate
our CO2 emissions in a more standardized
way than before, enabling us to report Scope 1
and Scope 2 emissions. Scope 1 emissions include
all direct CO2 emissions which we are generating
(e.g., through the use of our company cars,
business trips, how our employees get to work,
and energy consumption), with Scope 2 including
all CO2 emissions from our subcontractors / CO2
emissions created.
Our long-term goal
S U S TA
CORE VALUE
I N A B
Our long-term goal is to reduce our CO2 impact
mainly by increasing our share of intermodal flows.
Over the next couple of years, the target is to cover
min. 20% of our transportation flows via intermodal
solutions. In addition, we are going to emphasize,
research, and focus on alternative fuel solutions,
such as Biodiesel or LNG, and devise systems
which can enable them to be included as part of
sustainable logistic solutions. Sustainability, sustainable
solutions, and sustainable procurement
are part of UnitCargo’s DNA and deeply rooted in
our company values.
