The LanDUnGS-<br />

BrÜCKEn, or<br />

wharves, were<br />

built at the beginning of the twentieth century as a<br />

waterfront station for passenger ships. Today, the<br />

Landungsbrücken are the centre of tourist attention in<br />

the harbour. All the Elbe ferry liners, numerous harbour<br />

tours and barge excursions depart from Landungsbrücken,<br />

whose maritime flair and popular souvenir shops,<br />

the bustle of the incoming and outgoing boats and<br />

ships, the smell of fish rolls and atmosphere of faraway<br />

places fill the air and attract residents and tourists<br />

alike. The beach clubs which have become established<br />

institutions along this part of the Elbe in recent years<br />

offer beach atmosphere, hip music and exotic cocktails.<br />

The old ST PaULi ELBE TUnnEL, a masterpiece of<br />

engineering built almost one hundred years ago, consists<br />

of two 400-metre long tunnels open to pedestrians,<br />
