- ft Is Ume to end debate on Memorial Park
The various sides on the issue have bem presented
The use of the field bounded by Wesley, Ocean, 5th
and 6th has been hashed out over the past several
years. Most recently, the proposal was advanced by
some private dtizens to relocate Manorial Park to
:the site of the old Wesley Avenue school and use the
;-land for a high school playing Reid.
1 One side of the argument Is that the school district
'badly needs more recreational areas, It seems to us
there are sufficient playing fields. Maybe not the
Ideal amount of space, but then one does have to
consider the ultra-tight quarters we are In here In
tightly-developed Ocean aty.
The other side of the coin is that the ana represents
hallowed ground because of Its dedication to tin
memory of dtems who have given thtir lives far
their country. We don't necessarily support that
view; after all, there are no graves to move, only
memorial granite and bride
What few seem to be mentioning is that elected
and appointed officials — following public debate —
decided a few yean ago that the Memorial Park area
was to be a so-called passive recreational park In
fact! tens of thousands of doUan in state moneys
went into what is there today.
Tht decision then was Out the city needed open
apace, a place tor people to walk and talk without
fear of being hit In tho head by balls or fttobees. We
wanted a park We paid tor a park We have a park
lite issue is behind us. Let us be concentrating our
opinions, talents and moneys on problems teeing us.
Irs Ume to move forward.
