Subscrtbtrt of Samrnetw Communication^ which
means Just about evttyoht with a television to our
area, received a vtry patronlaihg litter wctntly. In
the lecohd paragraph it wai stated Iht company
was inertasmg the number of basic channels mm
21 to 31 "In response to your changing television
needs.
Thirteen paragraphs down In the 16-pamgraph,
small-typt letter, it is stated: In ordir to make
these channel additions possible, the new basic
rate will be $13.95, ifrtetive January 1989. We
hope that you will agree that this new basic mtvice
has more to offer for your entire family..."
We don't agree. Furthermore we restnt the
apparent dupuclty. During the rectnt hearing on
the renewal of its cable TV franchlit, Sarnmons*
regional manager claimed the so-called restructuring
was necessitated by additional costs incurred
over the past two yean since Bammorts took over
the Ocean City lines from Cablentertaliunent.
Wt concui' with those subscrtbirs and city officials
who viiw this 36 peretnt wit hike as a ploy,
who consider the extra channels as not being in
the best Interests of the people and who don't like
the dictatorial process which cable televlson firms
have in setting rates without a formal hearing process.
We call upon the city to stipulate in its renewal
of the Summons* franchise that the basic cable service
remain as it is at the price it was, allowing
those who want more channels to pay tar thtrn
without penalizing all subscribers.
