Jack Neali talks about Lou Holtz; polish with fire and brimstop<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> you reading this have heart <strong>of</strong> Lou Holtz, You<br />

know, head coach at Notre Dame, <strong>1988</strong> Coaeh <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Year, The guy who will lead hu team out againit West<br />

Virginia next Monday in the Resta Bowl for the national<br />

championship.<br />

" But one <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>City</strong> resident knows Lou Holla better<br />

thaft the rest <strong>of</strong> us because 0 was there at the beginning,<br />

Jadt Neall was a sophomore at The College <strong>of</strong> William<br />

i Mary in 1969 when Holtz assumed his first head<br />

coaching job there. Holt? had previously been an<br />

assistant at Iowa, William fc Mary, Connecticut, South<br />

Carolina and Ohio State,<br />

*He wai polished," remembered Nenll, "but he was a<br />

to grab your fa« mask on the practice field to make a<br />

Neall was an All-South Jersey player at <strong>Ocean</strong> <strong>City</strong><br />

High School who went on to become an AU-Arnerican<br />

linebacker at William & Mary,<br />

In his three years in WilUanwburg, Va,, Helta's teams<br />

were 13-20, including a visit to toe Tangerine Bowl in<br />

1970.<br />

"W» played a tough schedule for a school our slie,"<br />

Hid Neall. "We played against Miami, North Carolina,<br />

fulane and other major coUtge programs. 11<br />

In fact, during Neall's senior year, William & Mary<br />

had the lead In tht fourth quarter <strong>of</strong> every gaaw, but<br />

still managed to lose six times.<br />

"I remember one game when a guy named Danny<br />

Buggs brought 1 kick back to our 10-yard line in the<br />

four years at North Carolina State where his Hams were<br />

in the Top 20 three times and In a bowl all four years.<br />

Prom nn thwugh 1983 he coached at Arkansas, guiding<br />

the Raiorbacks to six bowl appearances and a Wo <strong>of</strong><br />

Tbp-10 BiUshes.<br />

Then It was two years at Minnesota before moving to<br />

Now Dame in 1986. His three Irish teams are 24-10<br />

with one game to go.<br />

Hold's biggest failure was a 3-10 record AS head coach<br />

<strong>of</strong> the New York Juts in 1976. He lift the MM with one<br />

game left in the season.<br />

Minnesota before a "scheduled Independence Bowl<br />

appearance against Clemson, He left because he had<br />

already signed a contract to coaeh at Notre Dame.<br />

He hag gained some attention for his discipline.<br />

Againit Southern Cat this year, Holts tint some players<br />

home because they were late for a team breakfast.<br />

He had also suspended three <strong>of</strong> his finest <strong>of</strong>fensive<br />

players at Arkansas before the 1977 Orange Bowl.<br />

•He always was pretty strict about rules and schedules,<br />

1 * said Neall. "He was especially concerned with<br />

punctuality. 1 remember him waving hit* American<br />

Express card at us and reminding us that he'd buy a<br />

ticket and fly us home If we were late.<br />
