Jack Neali talks about Lou Holtz; polish with fire and brimstop
Most of you reading this have heart of Lou Holtz, You
know, head coach at Notre Dame, 1988 Coaeh of the
Year, The guy who will lead hu team out againit West
Virginia next Monday in the Resta Bowl for the national
championship.
" But one Ocean City resident knows Lou Holla better
thaft the rest of us because 0 was there at the beginning,
Jadt Neall was a sophomore at The College of William
i Mary in 1969 when Holtz assumed his first head
coaching job there. Holt? had previously been an
assistant at Iowa, William fc Mary, Connecticut, South
Carolina and Ohio State,
*He wai polished," remembered Nenll, "but he was a
Rr»«nd>brunstone type of coach who wouldn't hesitate
to grab your fa« mask on the practice field to make a
point.*
Neall was an All-South Jersey player at Ocean City
High School who went on to become an AU-Arnerican
linebacker at William & Mary,
In his three years in WilUanwburg, Va,, Helta's teams
were 13-20, including a visit to toe Tangerine Bowl in
1970.
"W» played a tough schedule for a school our slie,"
Hid Neall. "We played against Miami, North Carolina,
fulane and other major coUtge programs. 11
In fact, during Neall's senior year, William & Mary
had the lead In tht fourth quarter of every gaaw, but
still managed to lose six times.
"I remember one game when a guy named Danny
Buggs brought 1 kick back to our 10-yard line in the

After the thwe years at WlUlam & Mary, Holt! spent
four years at North Carolina State where his Hams were
in the Top 20 three times and In a bowl all four years.
Prom nn thwugh 1983 he coached at Arkansas, guiding
the Raiorbacks to six bowl appearances and a Wo of
Tbp-10 BiUshes.
Then It was two years at Minnesota before moving to
Now Dame in 1986. His three Irish teams are 24-10
with one game to go.
Hold's biggest failure was a 3-10 record AS head coach
of the New York Juts in 1976. He lift the MM with one
game left in the season.

appearance against Clemson, He left because he had
already signed a contract to coaeh at Notre Dame.
He hag gained some attention for his discipline.
Againit Southern Cat this year, Holts tint some players
home because they were late for a team breakfast.
He had also suspended three of his finest offensive
players at Arkansas before the 1977 Orange Bowl.
•He always was pretty strict about rules and schedules,
1 * said Neall. "He was especially concerned with
punctuality. 1 remember him waving hit* American
Express card at us and reminding us that he'd buy a
ticket and fly us home If we were late.
