Beyond
tax rates
there has been a lot in the news lately about that
new group In town and what they're supposedly
up to. We re referring to FIT, the taxpayers watchdog
group which formed earlier this year and
now culms a membership of several thousand.
The leaders of the Fairness in Taxes group have
said all along that they formed primarily to keep
taxes Ln hand, given the city's history of annual
tax rate increases. In the face of what some perceive
as a threat to their lifestyle, at least one other
group lias farmed, claiming that if MT gets its
way, city services will be in jiopardy.
We continue to believe that taxes can be kept
down without any serious Infringement upon
municipal services. After all* we have over $1 Billion
worth of ratabies in this resort,
Still, we would like to see PIT take on the other
entitles which add to the cost of living in Ocean
City, For instance» the water company and the
cable TV firm are both readying increased rates
for their services, Specifically, we would like to
know what kind of wages and salaries the water
utility Is paying — information that has been
denied us.
While taxes per se are not Involved here, w§
would still like to see the taxpayers* watchdog
group take on the utilities, We would gladly
report the results.
And if FIT Is successful there, then perhaps
authorities and commissions like the MUA, Garden
State Parkway and county Bridge Commieston
should be next,
