A local sports fisherman has
^received word from
Congressman Charles W,
Sandman thai commercial
fishermen illegally catching
game fish will have their
licenses revoked if they are
caught by inspectors.
In a letter to Alfred Benson,
Jr.. of 1608 Central HV ,
Sandman said he had talked to
John O'Dowd, chief of Fish
and Game in Trenton, and was
told the commercial fishermen
are inspected on a regular basis
for violations,
Benson had written
Sandman complaining that
trawlers were dragging their
nets within 100 feet of the surf
here. Sandman told Benson:
"Each day they receive similar
complaints to yours and each
and every one of them are
investigated. The trawlers from
Virginia are authorized to
catch Menhaden and Menhaden
only. Inspectors cheek their
boats every day to be sure they
aren't catching any of the game
fish. If they find any
irregularities, they are subject
to having their license
revoked."
Benson said hli complaint to
Sandman ftemtned from
incidents that occurred on
August 30 between Great Egg
Hgrbor and Corson's Inlets, He
said the trawler fishing went on
for a week from 4 a,m, to noon
each day, Benson said he
suspected the trawlers were
netting large schools of
weakfish, which frequent the
waters around here at this time
of year,
Benson said he doubted that
the commireia! fishermen were
e»tohing Menhaden. "It's been
years since any sizable catches
of Menhaden have been
reported in this area," he said.
Calling the problem one of
the most important facing this
resort area Benson «aid, "When
a large fleet of "net" fishermen
clean out a large school of
game fish within a few hundred
yards of our shore this presents
a problem just as important as
beach erosion."
Benson urged the
Congressman to contact
representatives in Congress
from the Kilmarnock, Va,,
where most of the trawlers
come from, and advise them of
the feeling of people in this
area.
Sand pumping directed toward 10th st. than anticipated
Winter program revamped
The winter pumping prop-am for the municipal
dredge "Sandpiper" has been altered to enable the
dredgmen to put a protective sand barrier at several
more center city beaches before the winter storms
strike.
Deputy to the Mayor Richard G. Snyder said the sand
pumping will continue in the 21st to 22nd st, area until
that beach is brought up to a level of from seven to
eight feet. Then instead of putting an additional five
feet of sand on beaches from 13th to 22nd sts,, the pipe
will be extended to 10th at.
Snyder said the one block between 9th and 10th sts.
is critical and will require weeks of pumping just to
establish a beach there. Last winter part of a building on
the west side of the boardwaJk collapsed when the
ocean eroded sand from its foundation,
"We aren't sure yet if we can pump to 9th st. from
our present location in the bay at 16th st,." Snyder said.
The Deputy Mayor said the city may rent or purchase a
smaJ! truck-mounted booster pump to push the sand
and water solution to 9th st.
Also scheduled for pumping this fall is the Ilth st.
beach, which has been eroding badly for the past few
yean. Snyder said no dat« has been set for bepnnuig the
pumping at center city beaches. He said plans now call
for laying the pipe to see how far the dredge will pump
sand without thr aid of a booster station. If the flow i
inadequate at the extinrp distances then the hooter
will be acquired Q n\di*T said
