New look at Wetlands Bill
The iontroversial Wetlands Aft of
1970 was passed by the Slot* 1 Assembly
Monday despite the ohjiu-tions of ten
South Jersey assembly men, The bill now
goes to Governor William T C'nhill, why
will sign it into law
Thij bill, passed with Si'tinte
amendments, requires that a permit hv
obtained from the State Oepsirtmenl of
Environmental Protection before any
draining, dumping, dredging, alteration,
pollution or building of any kind can
take place nn the wetlands of the stale,
Another provision nf the Act would
prohibit development of wetlands less
than an elevation of one foot above local
extreme high water. South Jersey
Assemblymen and |oc»l officials iontend
this provision will result m an
unreasonable hardship nn liiiistiii ri'Ki>rt
communities.
They say that the hill when it takes
effect in two years, after maps of the
state's wetlands have hi'en completed,
will seriously effect the wnnomy of such
coastal rce 1 "' 1 " Thpro i« morit in fhiu
argiimpnt
Officiiils of the southern counties
where most of this meadow land is
located say the act is an attempt by
North Jersey politicians to preserve open
spaces at someone elses expense.
The provision that would restrict the
development of wetlands less than an
elevation of one foot above load
extreme high water is unrealistic to say
the least Most of the marsh land on thjs
island and, in fact, parts of the
developed area of the city are less than a
foot above the extreme high watPr mark.
No one, including real estate
speculators and government leaders,
wants tA see all of the state's wetlands
turned into housing developments and
shopping centers. However, the orderly
growth of this community demands that
.some of the present rrnirshlmid give w,iif>
