The men who made these arrests have vocally criticized Dungan and Young for keeping the facts from the newspapers The detectives and uniformed officers who worked hard on Lnveitiptiong of drug users and pushers deserve recognition in the press for their efforts. City Hal! should recognize the value of publicizing a hard line approach to the drag problem. Young people who make money selling drugs will be less likely to peddle their wares in a town that is known for Healing severely with the drug pushers. The Police Department's four man detective division spent the greater part of the summer working on drug cases. No one is willing to say anymore that a drug problem does not exist here In addition to the regular police officers a highly capable summer officer ww assigned to infiltrate drug parties in the resort's hippie community. He passed on to police officials much valuable information, other officers said, but nothing was done with it. The Sentinel ledger learned early in the season of the identity of the undercover man and the areas in which he was working. The secret was well kept by this paper, but still Chief Dungan did not think it important enough to brief the local prpss on Ocean City's drug problems. The value of evaluation A report on city operations prepared by the State Department of Community Affairs has been turned, over to the city commissioners for review. The 89 page report contains tables, copies of ordinances and resolutions, as well as suggestions on how the city commissioners can improve operations of the municipal government. The field work for the survey was done between April 22 and June 2, A state investigator talked with department heads, a few selected employees, and toured city owned buildings. Critics of the study claim the Sharp administration waited until a friendly Republican Administration fookôver in Trenton before having the study made. They point out that the present administration has been in city hall for three yeari and had ample time before now to caU for such a study. The voluminous report appears to be fairly nonpolitical, but its actual worth Mems to be questionable. While it calls for reorganization of several departments, no mention is made of saving the taxpayers any money. In fact, the report urges the hiring of additional help in some areas. Any report on the efficiency of operations of the city by a state agency is simply one bureaucracy telling another bureaucracy what it is doing wrong. The city commissioners could just as easily go to Trenton and do an efficiency study on the Department of Community Affairs, What the Sharp Administration will do with these recommendations in the six months before election is pure and simple speculation. Any changes now could be interpretated by their opposition as a pandstand election play. If the three incumbents have real intentions of gaining re-election they would do well to put aside this elaborate State report and work out meaningful measures of their own to reduce the soaring tax rate. Rollback interest rates There is growing sentiment in Gonjp-ess and elsewhere for a rollback of the high Interest rates which have plagued the money market in the last few years. Following a call for a federally-imposed maximum rate of six percent by AFL-CIO leader George Meany, Congressman Wright Patman has also called for a rollback to the six percent level in a letter to David Rockefeller, chairman of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, Patman is chairman of the House Banking Committee, Patman believes the nation's big banks are guilty of too much profittaking and that recent high interest rates have depressed the housing market and increased unemployment, among other things, In the opinion of a growing number of legislators and concerned citizens, government action would be justified to bring interest rates down to a more reasonable level in the field of home financing. Interest rates as high as eight percent force the average citizen to pay thousands of additional dollars in purchasing a home with a mortgage. An example of the heavy cost of high interest rates, the difference between a 4'4 and 8 percent rate on a $20,000 mortgage is $700 for the first year alone. Remember when , . . ONE ? The beach will be there with or without your house. I don't wigh to give the impression that the world would be better without Ocean City. I love Ocean City, I use it's services. Do We really envy north Jersey's expansion and so-called economic progress? Yes, the cash registers here might ring more frantically for a while. But we would be squandering our future as a resort area if we destroyed the marshlands by permitting development to go unchecked. You state that "no one, including real estate speculators and government leaders, wants to see all of the state 1 * wetlands turned into housing developments and shopping centers". Agreed, But who will blow the whistle and shout "Stop!" at the proper time? Surely the Commissioner of Environmental Protection could do this much more Impartially and fairly than any set of local politicians (no matter how pure their motives) since the latter are usually personally Acquainted and involved with the developers. Moreover, the mapping of the wetlands is a prerequisite for intelligent management of them, and this is precisely what the Wetlands Bill provides for. So let's stop quibbling about the wording of the bill and get on with the protection of our wetlands! Marburger has advised members of local Boards of Education, and County Superintendents of Schooli, in asking that each school curriculum be geared to the future, "If air and water pollution are to be eliminated, if our race problem is to be solved, if the population and knowledge explosions are to be controlled, if problems not yet imagined are to be contended with, can we saddle tomorrow's citizen with yesterday's content and process?" Commissioner Marburger iskg. "Relevance is the contemporary password of our students and can we deny the relevence of their plea? They are not asking for sanctuary, for escape, for n cop-out. They are asking for an education which will be more effective in helping them face their problems, their reality, and their future. Student activism, in short, is more likely to become a significant and eonitructlve force on behalf of improved education if we can all remember that schools are for children, that we teach what we Iiv«, and tomorrow is the world of youth." Dr. Marburger emphasized that "one day we must leave all that we possess to our children" and therefore parents and teadheM should spend as much time as possible teaching them techniques that will aid their future lives, "Most of our time, you and mine, is related to yesterday, quite limply because that is where we have spent most of our lives," continued Dr. Marburger. Not too long ago we 1 described in some detail an adventure in moving when we helped a young lady we know move a "few items" to her new apartment. We still carry the battle srars, a cruihed toe and cut leg, from that episode. More recently we got involved in an adventure in sailing on a sailfish off the Morningside Road beach. We never realiied there was so much to sailing a 12 foot boat and even with the help of three Ocean City Yacht Club trained sailors the boat capsized at least two dozen times. In addition we were washed off the craft twice by waves coming ver the bow. Our adventure in sailing became an adventure in swimming. We learned some interesting sailing terms spiced up with some talk that would make a sailor blush as our skipper narrowly missed running over the North St, jetty. We have learned from f ^st experience that the end of a jetty is not the place to be with or without a boat. We jumped overboard when a collision appeared imminent. Finally the boat and two of its four occupants reached the beach amid the applause and giggles of a growing crowd. We, along with another sailor who abandoned ship, swam to the beach quietly avoiding as much of th> limelight as possible We then parked our weary body on a nearby blanket and thanked heavens that our adventure in sailing, like the adventure in moving, WHS over, * * • AN ADVENTURE IN FISHWG. For four summers we penned the "Hook . . . Line . . . Sinker" fishing column in this newspaper. During those years we acquired a wealth of knowledge about fish living in this area. However, we didn't learn how to catch fish. In recent weeks we have been listening to fish tales from Bob Davenport and Art Ford over the 9th st, and Asbury av. lunch table, We have no reason to question the veracity of these two sportsmen. They are both known for their prowess in the world of fish. The Wcoocnfflfi Ford and Davenport have reported that bluefish and waakfigh are especially plentiful in ocean waters this September. We will have to take their word for it. We have enough trouble trying to stay on a sailboat, let alone fish from it. We remember vividly our last fish. It was a white Martin caught in July of 1966, We haven't caught a fish since. Why bother, anything elje would be a let down, * * # PROGRESS REPORT. The Editorin-Chief of this 1 weekly newspaper, Vincent T. Michelette, entered Shore Memorial Hospital two weeks ago for an operation, Mr. Michelette ha* come along remarkably well and by the time this column appears in print our Editor should be home polishing his golf clubs. We visited Vjnce in his hospital room late last week and took him a copy of the Sentinel that was edited mainly by our hands and those of veteran reporter Steve Jones, We figured if showing Vince the Sentinel didn't bring on a relapje nothing would. Vince took the more obvious errors in stride and told us we did a good job. We are a little more confident this week and if everything goes well we should pretty well know what we are doing by the time our Editor returns from a period of extended convalescence on the golf course. Vince claims he needs up to eight weeks to fully recover. If that's teue we wiU more than likely be the Sentinel's next hoipital case. * • • MR. STEVE. Working with us while Editor Michelette is in the hospital and on vacation is veteran Atlantic City Press reporter Steve Jones, Steve is a highly capable and experienced reporter and has been a big help to us since Vince left. Monday afternoon Steve came back from lunch to find a box on his desk. The box contained a bright red rose and an enclosed card was from "An Admirer", Now, we have been covering the Ocean City scene for four years and have never received any bouquets. We have had more than our share of brickbats hurled at us. Steve was naturally flattered, but couldn't figure out who could possibly have sent the flower. Then he thought Vince might have done it out of gratitude for not having to put up with us for the next few weeks. He called up the hospital, but Vince said he knew nothing about the flower. So the case of the mysterious rose continues. Will the real rose peddler please stand up? ' * * * A PASSmO NOTE. The first day of Fall arrived yesterday morning at 5:59 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, Actually that's 6:59 a.m., daylight Saving Time, In the next few weeks the leaves on the few trees we have around here, wUl start to change color, A chill is already m the early morning air, so we think we didn't bother getting up at 8:59 a.m. to welcome in the new season. After all these years we figured Pall could arrive without us. We securely pulled the covers up over our head just as the first chill air of autumn blasted through the open window. There is no mistaking it now. Summer is over for another year, * * * WE STAND CORRECTED, Last week we did a piece about the Miss America Pageant and other beauty pageants in this area. We stated that the first Miss Ocean' City Pageant was in 1907. The other day we received a letter from Bill MawWnney of 1561 Bay av, Mr, Mawhjnney pointed out that the original Miss Ocean City Pageant was sponsored by the Exchange Club In 1960 and I9S1. We were also told that the Exchange Club sponsored the Miss New Jersey Pageant at the Ftahdtfi Hotel ppols in 1962. This is something we did not know. Our memory does not go back that far con- corning such matters. We woe somewhat disappointed when we i saw our mother dressed in a pants wit with ball bottom design. Motherhood is always the last bastion of continuity with the past in an ever changing world. And now our mother, hai toppled from her pedistal, thrown her skirts away and adopted the unisex look. Worse than that she claims she is making more of these outfits. All of this made-us stop and think when we last saw a female in a dress that made her look like she was supposed to look and not like a man. We couldn't remember when. American womanhood, with the exception of a brave few, has forsaken the mini skirt because in Women's Lib terms, "it putt women on display". We would like to go on the record as endorsing the mini skirt and any dress that is neatly tailored. He started this home for pre delinquent boys with two who needed help and now has a total of 20 from all ports of the state and ranging in agps from 12 to 15 He went on to explain that a staff of 30 dedicated adults operate the ranch.
