Edgar Wehmeyer of 2100 West ay,, an outspoken critic of the alley paving program tince it was started more than two yean ago, returned to city hall to find out just wnfn the project will be completed. Wehrneyer demanded to know if the city had pajd 118,000 in withheld funds to Rudolph Meckel and Son of Vlneland, one of two companies contracted to surface the 22 miles of city alleys. Mayor Robert L, Sharp told Wehmeyer the city was still holding and was arranging with another contractor to finish the work started by Meckol. City Engineer Joseph F. Hylaijd said the alley paving program has caused some problems due to substandard work by Meekel, but according to the Engineer, "the city is doing everything possible to get the job completed. Ferry needs new vessels — Sandman In a lengthy report on the problems besetting the financially troubled Cape May Lewes, Del., ferry line, Congressman Charles W, Sindinan, Jr., has announced • that the line c«n be put on a paying basil. Sandman laid the ferry cm pay for itself if the heavy dredging cost of keening Crow Shoal open for the boats can be subsidized or eliminated. "In either event, the saving of the dredging cost cin pay for other capital improvements," Sandman said. The Congressman advocated replacing the present steamships or installing diesel engines in the two remaining steam ships. "The decrease in the cost of mujntenance and operation of the old steamships can pay for either new ships or the dieselizing of the steamships. Presently the New Jersey and Delaware, the two larger vessel.?, are loperated by steam power. Sandman also called for an increase in both the winter and summer schedules to provide an incentive for people to ride the line. He also advocates the construction of a casuuway built out to Crow Shoal, which will cut the craning time to 40 minutes. Sharp and his colleagues said Wedneiday they have had little time to decide what to do to combat the Wetlands Bill before it is signed by Governor William T, Cahill, but said they would Tight it all the way to the end. Sharp said the city s position was made clear in a resolution sent to all state legislators and Cahill "We are opposed to the bill in its present form and will work with my group to fight it.^Sharp said. The Cape May County Republican Organization has notified Governor William T Cahill that it is opposed to the Wetlands bill which passed the Nf* J»r-py Assembly yesterday over the opposition of South Jersey lawmakers Freeholder Director Francis B Townst'nd, of Ocean City, chaintian of the county Republican group, sent a telegram to Cahill slating the organization's position Townsend, in his message to Cahill, said the organization "urgently requests that you meet with the officials of all the affect*d municipalities in the • state . prior to approving" the bill.
