In recent weeks we discussed
the wines of Italy, dwelling
specially on sauternes and
j chiuitii. One of the most
: popular of all Italian wines
: (next to chiinti) is Orvieto
that comes from ihe province
of Umbria, bordering on the
Mediterranean, The white .
wines of Orvieto are both dry
(seceo) and semi-dry
(abboceato). Both have a fresh
fryitiness, with a bitter
undertone. They are light
straw-colored Since Italy has been called "The Vineyard of
the World" it would be impossible, to review all thr
delightful vintages that come from ner productive slopes
Lesser known wines include Moscaleilo, a fruity and cieuanl
wine that comes from the region of Lakp BoUcna thi.
nectar-like Moscato di Salerno of Apulia, the many Sicilian
wines including Final, Corvo and Marsala. As a gPni>rnl rule
the wjnes of northern Italy will be better than those from
the south. Many do not travel well, thus are not exported
to ourshores. Your next trip to Italy could be an sidvoruurf
in wine discovery
QUICKIE QUIZ
Q. Are the longert igtd wines the best?
A,There is no necessary connection between
the age of wine ind its quality. Some wines
reach their peak of maturity within
monthi after fermentation and cannot be
further aged without losing quality. Other
wine* do not reach their maturity for two,
three, five years ... up to half a century or
more.
Ihe balance of payments is a
prime example of huw an
aiilin'sMvi' assertion of
ilTnorancc can be of great help.
I speak feelingly on this subject
because my own fund cif
ignorance on it is so large.
Furthermore, I am proud cif
the fact that I came by my
ignorance the hard
way through long study which
revealed that most of what I
knew about the balance of
payment* wasn't so. An
agMressive assertion of
ignorance tin the "balance of
payments problem" (whatever
that may be) would have led to
better national policy decisions
in that area than we have in
fact had
One logical reaction of
economists to my emphasis on
ignorance may be to advocate
more and bigfjer programs of
research to fill ~jn the
knowledge gaps. I don't mean
to argue against this approach
but I do have reservations
about its fruilfulness. Much of
whnt we would like to know is,
I think, not only unknown in
practice but unknowable in
principle
The r.'HMin I say this is that
tiicrc seems to me to be an
inherent contradiction in the
belief that we ever can know
eerlain ihinfis For example, if
we ever b«ame able to predict
Ihe large and sudden changes in
Ihe inventory situation thai are
occasionally recorded, they
would cease to happen
Perhaps what is needed is
economics is an equivalent of
the Heisj.nberg principle of
uncertainty in physics. This
kind of precise definition of
what we can know and can't
know would, I believe, be a
most notable contribution to
our science and a most helpful
pjide to practitioners cif our
art
Ail this shouldn't be too
shocking and il may even be
Ifitp If economists really knew
what they are supposed (by
others and sometimes by
themselves) to know, there
would be a good ease for a
centrally planned economy We
can save society from that fate
by asserting our ignorance
aggressively.
