I NTRODUCTION<br />
Welcome back to the third edition <strong>of</strong> Corporate Counsel magazine’s <strong>Directory</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>In</strong>-<strong>House</strong> <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Departments</strong>. This edition covers the top <strong>500</strong> U.S. companies<br />
based on their Fortune ® rank and includes expanded biographical data on their<br />
general counsel. You will also find listings <strong>of</strong> chief in-house counsel in six practice areas, and<br />
the “Go-To” law firms for each <strong>of</strong> those practice areas.<br />
This year the practice areas covered include (1) Corporate Transactions, (2) <strong>In</strong>tellectual<br />
Property, (3) Labor and Employment, (4) Corporate Governance, (5) Litigation, and (6)<br />
European Union Matters. For each company, we also include contact information, Fortune<br />
rank, industry designation, company size and law department size.<br />
To make this <strong>Directory</strong> easy to use, we have listed the companies alphabetically and included<br />
page references for all materials submitted by sponsoring “Go-To” <strong>Law</strong> Firms (see below).<br />
We have also provided extensive indexes to help you locate in-house counsel by name and law<br />
school, as well as a list <strong>of</strong> all companies by Fortune rank and location.<br />
About the “Go-To” <strong>Law</strong> Firms<br />
We asked each <strong>of</strong> the top <strong>500</strong> company GC’s which outside law firms they turned to for<br />
assistance in the six practice areas listed above. (Please see methodology on page 5 for a full<br />
explanation.) We call these firms the “Go-To” <strong>Law</strong> Firms and they are listed within the<br />
<strong>Directory</strong> below each company who responded to our survey.<br />
Thirty-three <strong>of</strong> these “Go-To” <strong>Law</strong> Firms opted to sponsor this <strong>Directory</strong> via the purchase<br />
<strong>of</strong> a <strong>Law</strong> Firm Pr<strong>of</strong>ile, comprised <strong>of</strong> a two-page overview <strong>of</strong> the firm’s structure, strengths and<br />
recent achievements. Some firms also included an advertisement within their pr<strong>of</strong>ile.<br />
While reviewing the <strong>Law</strong> Firm pr<strong>of</strong>iles, you should keep in mind that this isn’t a publication<br />
where a firm can pay to be included. Each firm listed here possesses the fundamental credential<br />
<strong>of</strong> having been named as a “Go-To” <strong>Law</strong> Firm by one or more <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Top</strong> <strong>500</strong> GCs surveyed.<br />
As such, the materials provided by each <strong>of</strong> the sponsoring law firms are worthy <strong>of</strong> your<br />
attention – not because we say so, but because their clients say so.<br />
We hope that this <strong>Directory</strong> will increase the channels <strong>of</strong> communication among in-house<br />
counsel, and between in-house and outside counsel. We will continue to make improvements to<br />
