Rexam’s Responsible
Sourcing Programme Tools
Although we have dedicated HR, H&S and
environmental resources within the group
to look at our own CSR activities, the
responsibility for looking to our supplier’s
activities lies mainly with our Supply Chain
teams. In designing our programme we have
had to be as considerate as possible of the
workload these team members have in the
existing roles and we’ve tried to design the
tools and processes to ‘fit into’ existing
processes rather than add to them, and for
the tools to be as ‘self explanatory’ as possible.
The two main tools we have created are the
Rexam Responsible Sourcing Handbook and
Risk Matrix.
The Rexam Responsible Sourcing
Handbook
The handbook provides comprehensive
guidance to all employees who deal with
suppliers including introductory sections on
‘What is CR?’ and ‘CR at Rexam’. The main
focus, however, is in the third section where
we explain our entire Responsible Sourcing
Program and provide step by step instructions
on how to complete each of the activities
involved. The handbook also includes reference
documents and contacts in case further
support is required.
The Rexam Responsible Sourcing
Risk Matrix
Sitting alongside the Rexam Responsible
Sourcing Handbook, the Risk Matrix is the
core reference point for our Responsible
Sourcing activities. Originally designed as an
information gathering document, the Matrix
responsibility
case study
has now been developed into an online
solution accessible globally by all employees.
It has two search areas (Countries and Products)
where employees simply search for the
product they are procuring and the country
in which the supplier is situated and results
pages are returned. The results detail a list
of any issues associated with the selected
country/product. Each Country page contains
the following information per ‘issue’:
– Overview – What is the issue about
(generally and specific to that country)
– The standards required by Rexam
(relevant to the issue)
– How to evaluate if the supplier meets those
standards
– Actions to take if the standards are not met
The product risks are produced in a simplified
format of the above due to the nature of the
issues generally being less complex.
Having this document in place means all
employees are able to easily access and
understand the issues relevant to their suppliers
and are able to tackle them in a relevant and
constructive way.

into relevant languages)
All tools are explained in the handbook
including instructions on how and when to
use them and what to look for in supplier
responses.
Roll out
RESPONSIBLE SOURCING TOOLS
Creating these tools has been a large task,
but it means our program is now ‘self informing’
for all those involved in procurement. It has
also meant we were able to roll out to
employees around the world without the need
for extensive travel or time taken away from
activities for training workshops. Also,
because the tools are all available through
an internally developed bespoke ‘web
application’, all our employees can access
the information and guidance in a consistent
and user friendly format globally.
