COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATIONS Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) work with USTA districts, sections and the National Office to deliver USTA programs to grow the number of new and frequent recreational and competitive players. CTAs, independent local tennis associations, offer those in their respective communities a variety of programs such as after-school tennis and USTA League Tennis. A CTA is an organized group of dedicated volunteers (parents, players) and professionals (teaching pros, coaches, park & recreation staff, an attorney or key business leaders) who come together to support community tennis programs or projects. As an association, a group of volunteers develop their vision for tennis, based on the needs of the community in which they live. CTAs coordinate and maintain programs and services, acting as advocates, program administrators, promoters and fundraisers. They are not-forprofit entities, and they are key to promoting and developing the growth of tennis in their local communities. These efforts ensure that all people have the opportunity to experience the educational, health and other lifetime benefits of tennis. Alba Grijalva, a middle school student from Kansas City, Mo., smacks the ball during a May 2006 YES clinic. By partnering with groups such as the NCAA (in the case of this clinic), the USTA is dedicated to doing all it can to reach out to minorities. Stay Up To Date! “Go To The Net” –– missourivalley.usta.com Community Tennis JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS Junior Team Tennis offers youth age 6 to 18 the opportunity to play on co-ed teams that emphasize fun, fitness and friends. Leagues are composed of teams of boys and girls with similar abilities and ages that play regularly scheduled matches against other teams. TennisLink, the online software, is available for organizing teams and leagues, collecting fees, and a number of other uses. Local teams have the opportunity to compete in a District Championship that leads to the USTA Missouri Valley Section Championship held in Kansas City, Mo. Winning teams advance to the Junior Team Tennis National Championships. Slammers. JUNIOR NOVICE TOURNAMENTS Junior Novice Tournaments are intended to provide an introduction to tennis tournament play for youths. These are district-level events through which players may qualify to play in the USTA Missouri Valley Junior Novice Section Championships. Traditional brackets, compass draws, pool play, round robins and alternative scoring are among the formats utilized in junior novice events. Please consult the individual district Web sites, and/or the district pages in the Yearbook (pages 53-80) for specific junior novice eligibility rules and schedule of events.
