PHARMACIST NETWORK COMMITTEE<br />

Introduction: The National Cancer Institute of Canada Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Trials Group (NCIC CTG) is a cooperative oncology group which<br />

carries out cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials <strong>in</strong> cancer therapy, supportive care and prevention across Canada and <strong>in</strong>ternationally. It is one of the national<br />

programs and networks of the NCIC, and is supported by the NCIC with funds raised by the Canadian Cancer Society.<br />

History of the Pharmacists Network: In 1986, pharmacists affi liated with the NCIC CTG organized an education symposium held<br />

<strong>in</strong> conjunction with the annual spr<strong>in</strong>g meet<strong>in</strong>g, which became the fi rst National <strong>Oncology</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> Symposium (NOPS). In 1988,<br />

a pharmacist consultant was hired by the NCIC CTG to assist <strong>in</strong> the development and monitor<strong>in</strong>g of drug handl<strong>in</strong>g procedures for<br />

symptom control studies. As well, pharmacists were <strong>in</strong>vited to study workshops and start-up meet<strong>in</strong>gs with <strong>in</strong>vestigators and cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

research associates.<br />

Twenty-fi ve people attended the <strong>in</strong>augural meet<strong>in</strong>g of the Pharmacists Network, held <strong>in</strong> Montreal on November 29, 1992. There was a<br />

unanimous decision to form a Pharmacists Network by establish<strong>in</strong>g a Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group and develop<strong>in</strong>g a formal proposal.<br />

The Pharmacists Network Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group holds two meet<strong>in</strong>gs a year <strong>in</strong> conjunction with the Spr<strong>in</strong>g and Fall NCIC CTG meet<strong>in</strong>gs; as<br />

well as teleconferences throughout the year as required. A page for the Pharmacists Network is a part of the NCIC CTG website. The<br />

Pharmacists Network Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group has recently revised the <strong>Pharmacy</strong> Manual and provided a number of templates to assist pharmacists<br />

at participat<strong>in</strong>g centres. Examples of some available templates are illustrated on this display.<br />

Pharmacists Network Mission Statements:<br />

1. To promote the optimum utilization and standardization of oncology pharmacy services <strong>in</strong> the development and conduct of cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

trials.<br />

2. To improve communication and shar<strong>in</strong>g expertise <strong>in</strong> oncology issues and <strong>in</strong>formation between members, the central offi ce and<br />

other professional groups with<strong>in</strong> the NCIC CTG for the ultimate benefi t of the cancer patient.<br />
