NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE OF CANADA (NCIC) PHARMACISTS NETWORK WORKLOAD SURVEY – WHAT DOES PHAR-<br />
MACY DO TO SUPPORT ONCOLOGY CLINICAL TRIALS?<br />

Objective: To ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the work be<strong>in</strong>g done with<strong>in</strong> pharmacy to support oncology cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials with the aim of enhanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
NCIC Pharmacist Network activities and NCIC pharmacy focused cl<strong>in</strong>ical trial fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Design:The Pharmacists Network Steer<strong>in</strong>g Group designed a survey to collect <strong>in</strong>formation regard<strong>in</strong>g the number and experience<br />
of pharmacy staff actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials, the types of activities be<strong>in</strong>g undertaken and the sources of fund<strong>in</strong>g. This on-l<strong>in</strong>e<br />
survey was advertised to pharmacists known to NCIC. The results were then collated and analyzed.<br />
Results: Completed surveys were received from a representative cross section of centres. There was signifi cant variation <strong>in</strong> staffi ng<br />
resources across the country but most centres had one pharmacist responsible for cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials. The <strong>in</strong>volvement of pharmacy technicians<br />
varied greatly. Some centres had no technician <strong>in</strong>volvement. Cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials pharmacy staff usually had at least 3 years of oncology<br />
experience. A number of core activities were identifi ed. Most pharmacies receive some fund<strong>in</strong>g from cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials budgets or pharmacy<br />
levied fees.<br />
Conclusion: The <strong>in</strong>formation collected will be helpful <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for the Pharmacist Network to support oncology<br />
pharmacy cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials practice and can be used by NCIC to identify reasonable per case fund<strong>in</strong>g specifi cally for pharmacy services.<br />
