HAZARDOUS DRUG SPILL: IN-SERVICE DEVELOPMENT FOR COMMUNITY HOSPITAL PHARMACY STAFF<br />

Objective: To describe the development of a hazardous drug (HD) spill <strong>in</strong>-service by the British Columbia Cancer Agency (BCCA)<br />

<strong>Pharmacy</strong> Communities <strong>Oncology</strong> Network (CON) Educators.<br />

Design: The <strong>Pharmacy</strong> CON Educators developed the HD Spill In-Service based on the HD Spill Control <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong>, BCCA <strong>Pharmacy</strong><br />

Directive VI-10. The directive <strong>in</strong>corporates recommendations from the NIOSH “Prevent<strong>in</strong>g Occupational Exposures to Ant<strong>in</strong>eoplastic<br />

and Other Hazardous Drugs <strong>in</strong> Health Care Sett<strong>in</strong>gs” (Sept.2004) and ASHP Guidel<strong>in</strong>es on Handl<strong>in</strong>g Hazardous Drugs<br />

(Jan.2006).<br />

Materials and Method: The directive was divided <strong>in</strong>to key learn<strong>in</strong>g objectives. Photographs were taken of mock spills. A power po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

presentation was developed us<strong>in</strong>g the objectives and photographs.<br />

Results: Six learn<strong>in</strong>g objectives were identifi ed:<br />

Spill-kit contents<br />

Procedures for personnel contam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

Procedures for donn<strong>in</strong>g Personal Protective Equipment<br />

Locations of spills<br />

Types of spills<br />

Procedures for clean<strong>in</strong>g based on location and type of spill<br />

Conclusions: The <strong>Pharmacy</strong> CON Educators currently use the <strong>in</strong>-service to educate CON hospital pharmacy staff <strong>in</strong> HD spill control.<br />
