Since 2007 Pierre Grothmann has been keeping this studbook managed at species level. In the same year a subspecies investigation was launched. Pictures from the heads of different specimens of over a dozen institutions show some variations, still having a lot in common with the standard S. l. labiatus. All imported founders with known origin come from Bolivia. Both of the above facts let us assume that there is a majority of S. l. labiatus within the population. Nevertheless there is still a possibility of hybrids yet. Within 2007 and 2008 42.24.24 Red-bellied tamarins were born and 24.27.2 individuals died. On the 31st of December 2008 117.105.13 Red-bellied tamarins lived in 52 institutions (28 EAZA members, 21 European Non-EAZA members, 1 Arabian zoo, 1 South-East Asian zoo, 1 African zoo). 31. Dec.
