SJU RECEIVES PRESIDENT‘S AWARD FOR SERVICE
The Corporation for National and Community
Service has placed Saint Joseph‘s University on the
2007 President‘s Higher Education Community
Service Honor Roll, the highest honor a school
can achieve for its commitment to servicelearning
and civic engagement.
This is the second year the honor roll has
been announced, and SJU has been recognized
both years. Student participation in service
activities, the availability of service-learning
courses, and the scope and innovation of service
projects were all considered when selecting schools
for the honor roll.
Saint Joseph‘s was recognized for its number of service activities designed
to improve the quality of life for residents of the local community and
elsewhere. Grounded in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis — care for
the entire person — the culture at Saint Joseph‘s reflects a rigorous
academic experience with a focus on the common good. The honor roll is
also sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of
Housing and Urban Development, the USA Freedom Corps and the
President‘s Council on Service and Civic Population.
KATRINA RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE
Last January, 12 students and two Campus Ministry staffers participated
in what has become a continuing recovery effort to help rebuild areas
devastated by Hurricane Katrina. They visited St. Gabriel the Archangel
Parish in New Orleans and worked in Bayou La Batre, Ala., with the Bayou
Recovery Project, an organization that has rebuilt more than 225 homes
since Katrina hit.
This was the second time in three years that Saint Joseph‘s has organized
this trip. University officials hope to make it an annual immersion experience.
“It‘s important that the public remember the needs of people who were
affected by Katrina,“ said Matt Fullmer, immersion programs coordinator.
“Support there has been phenomenal, but the work is far from over.“

BRINGS EXPERTS TO CAMPUS
Saint Joseph‘s hosted four prominent members of the University
community over the past year to share their extensive business experience
with students in both the College of Arts and
Sciences and the Erivan K. Haub School
of Business. A newly established initiative,
the Executive-in-Residence program invites
accomplished business professionals to campus,
enabling current students to hear firsthand
about their industry experience.
James J. Nealis III ‘69 (B.S.), former
executive vice president of human resources
for construction materials giant Lafarge
North America, discussed how different
cultures impact business practices in Asia. Nealis ‘69
While at Lafarge, he was responsible for the
direction and management of the selection
and integration of new management teams in
India and China. He and his wife recently
established the Bernadette B. and James J.
Nealis ‘69 Program in Asian Studies with their
gift of $2.5 million (See story on page five).
Peter L. Lynch, president and chief executive
officer of Winn-Dixie Stores, headquartered
in Jacksonville, Fla., and a past member of the
Saint Joseph‘s University Board of Trustees,
was recently ranked No. 17 on the Supermarket
Lynch
News 2007 Power 50 List. Winn-Dixie Stores
is a food and drug retailer operating more
than 500 locations in Alabama, Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. In 2006,
the company recorded sales in excess of
$7 billion and employed 55,000 people.
One of the most connected insiders
in U.S. politics, David Girard-diCarlo, Esq. ‘70
(B.S.), addressed the upcoming presidential
election. A former member of SJU‘s Board
of Trustees and Chairman of Blank Rome LLP,
Girard-diCarlo served as Pennsylvania state

finance chairman for John McCain 2008 and
held similar positions during the Bush-Cheney
campaigns in both 2000 and 2004.
Nicholas L. Teti, Jr. ‘74 (B.A.), ‘96 (M.B.A.),
chief executive officer of Den-Mat Holdings, a
California-based manufacturer of cosmetic
dentistry products, provided insight from his
more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare
industry. Prior to his current position,
he served as CEO and president of Isolagen,
Inc., chairman and CEO of Inamed Corp., and
president and CEO of DuPont Pharmaceuticals.
