Fieldhouse Expansion and Renovation
Tom Wynne ’63 (B.S.) knows what it means to lead by example.
A two-sport standout at SJU, his leadership during a sterling four-year career under legendary
men’s basketball coach Dr. Jack Ramsay and an equally accomplished stint on the diamond – along
with a years-long commitment to supporting the school’s various sports programs – landed Wynne
in Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
It’s not surprising, then, that when plans were announced to transform the Fieldhouse into the
more modern and upscale, yet still intimate, Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena, Wynne once again led
the way. He was the first former SJU athlete to make a leadership gift to the current Campaign,
and the Hagan Arena’s new Hall of Fame Room will be named for him.
Wynne (pictured below wearing number 34) credits his lengthy and successful career in
telecommunications to the life skills he learned playing ball at Saint Joseph’s.
“There’s a confidence factor in anything you do,” he says. “If you’re president of a company,
chairman of the board or just out there working, there’s a
confidence factor we all have to have in terms of how we
live our lives. Confidence is built on success. Success in
basketball helped me feel I was the kind of person that
could succeed later in life. I had confidence in what I was
able to do and what I had done at Saint Joseph’s.”
University officials have long desired a basketball
facility to match the passion Wynne and so many fans share for SJU hoops. In the Hagan Arena, he believes,
Saint Joseph’s will enjoy such a place, a venue that will enhance not only the program but also the entire campus.
“
why i give
“It was a good thing for me to do ... I felt that I owed
the University something for the education and my
success in business as well as athletics.
