INSTITUTE OF CATHOLIC BIOETHICS PREMIERES INTERNET JOURNAL The Institute of Catholic Bioethics (ICB) has launched the Internet Journal of Catholic Bioethics (www.icbbioethics.com), the first such publication by a university in the country. This publication provides information and articles on medical and health issues faced by Catholics and others across the world. “This journal provides an opportunity for Catholic health care institutions to research articles and a forum for the discussion of Catholic bioethics,” said Peter Clark, S.J. ’75 (B.A.), professor of theology and director of the ICB. According to Clark, one of the publication’s goals is to make clear the Catholic Church’s stance on medical issues. “With so many Catholic hospitals, nursing homes and hospices today, it is important for people to understand the Church’s position on issues such as tube feeding, permanent vegetative states and euthanasia,” Clark said. “We hope to clarify these issues so that people can make informed decisions.” ALUMNI ASSOCIATION INTRODUCES THE HAWK T Although there is other apparel adorned with “The Hawk Will Never Die!“ or the emblem of the Hawk flying proud, no T-shirt has come to embody the University better than the inaugural edition of the Hawk T. A partnership between current students and the Alumni Association, the Hawk T represents the unification of students and alumni through their passion for Saint Joseph‘s University. T-shirt sales Back of Hawk T will benefit a different student organization each year, promoting the Ignatian ideal of being men and women for others. The Business Leadership Council of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business had been considering ways to connect students and alumni when National Alumni Board (NAB) President Dennis Sheehan ‘85 (B.S.) and members Mike Hare ‘83 (B.S.) and Marisa Griffin ‘78 (B.S.) came to the University with similar goals. The culmination of their combined efforts was to make a T-shirt every year, designed by a board of students and alumni, that celebrates Saint Joseph‘s traditions. Men‘s Basketball Head Coach Phil Martelli has been a strong supporter of the Hawk T project and sold the initial T-shirt. In one week, the original order of 775 completely sold out, and more than 2,500 Hawk Ts have been sold to date. The inaugural beneficiary of the Hawk T is Saint Joseph‘s nationally recognized Hand-in-Hand program, which has a 30-year history with the University. SJU REVITALIZES ONLINE PRESENCE Saint Joseph’s revitalized its online presence during the year, initiating a comprehensive overhaul of the University Web site in October and debuting MySJU for Alumni in April. The redesigned Web site provides clear navigation and fresh images, while providing additional spotlight on news and events, as well as new online homes for the College of Arts and Sciences and the Haub School of Business. The launch of MySJU for Alumni will help to engage alumni and reinforce their ties to the University community by granting single sign-on access to many of the password-protected functions, services and information currently available to students, faculty and staff. 10 president‘s report Perrotto ‘08 and Hauptman ‘08 BUSINESS STUDENTS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIPS Brian Perrotto ‘08 (B.S.) and Samantha Hauptman ‘08 (B.S.) received Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Scholarships, awarded by Saint Joseph‘s and BGS, the International Business Honor Society, to outstanding members of the Beta Gamma Sigma chapter. Perrotto, BGS‘s Outstanding Chapter Scholarship recipient, received a $1,250 scholarship last spring. Hauptman was the recipient of a $1,000 Collegiate Scholarship. BGS awards scholarships to chapter members all over the world; scholarship winners are recognized as the best in their business class. Because BGS has honored Saint Joseph‘s as a Silver Chapter for demonstrating chapter excellence in years past, the University is one of a select few in the world able to award two annual BGS scholarships. Hauptman and Perrotto were members of the STAR Scholars program, which trains accounting students to use high-level accounting applications, and the Sutula Scholars program, which works to advance the reputation of Saint Joseph‘s accounting program. Perrotto, who was an accounting major, was also on the executive board for Up ‘Til Dawn, a fundraiser for St. Jude Children‘s Research Hospital. Hauptman, who had a double major in accounting and finance, was a member of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and a tutor for the Learning Resource Center. Both accepted jobs at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where they had worked as interns. HSB ESTABLISHES CENTER FOR CONSUMER RESEARCH Internationally recognized marketing expert Michael Solomon, Ph.D., is the founding director of the newly established Center for Consumer Research at Saint Joseph‘s University‘s Erivan K. Haub School of Business. Solomon and his think tank of researchers and executives examine why people buy things to better understand the evolving needs of today‘s consumer. Leveraging the expertise of faculty at the University, the Center plans to study issues including: the dynamics of food; pharmaceutical and apparel marketing and their influence on consumers‘ obesity and body image; the accelerating fusion between food retailing and entertainment marketing; and the trend toward consumer empowerment in choices ranging from health care to the development of packaged and soft goods. The Center will also host conferences and executive education programs for marketers. Solomon and his assistant director, Natalie Wood, Ph.D., have amassed an impressive roster to form the Center‘s Thought Leaders Advisory Panel, which will provide strategic leadership for the program. Comprised of practitioners drawn from diverse industries, the panel includes well-known fashion designers, Kay Unger and Alexander Julian, and senior executives from a range of companies, including Cotton, Inc., Black & Decker, Intel, Taco Bell, Johnson & Johnson, Nickelodeon/MTV, NutriSystem, Subaru and many others.
