president’smessage | Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. 2 president‘s report
Capital campaigns are about the future, and With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph’s University, our most ambitious campaign ever, is no exception. As you’ll read in these pages, with your considerable help, we are laying the foundation for the University we seek to become: one that is more comprehensive; offers students a richer and more robust academic and cocurricular experience; one that provides our strong and growing faculty with the resources they need to produce impactful scholarship, and leavens its focus on rigorous academics with a mindful concern for spiritual growth. Yet as far-sighted and forward-looking as our vision must be, we hold a sacred obligation never to forget our legacy of nearly 160 years. All that we are now grew from those humble beginnings on Willing’s Alley. Each successive era in the University’s history, from Old City to North Philadelphia to City Avenue and now to the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus, has been built upon the achievements and dedication of those who came before. Recalling this is not merely polite but also necessary; our adaptability in the face of changing trends must be matched by a commitment to the core values upon which Saint Joseph’s was founded. Those values inform all that we do and all that we hope to do. We speak often of a Saint Joseph’s University community, and these are not idle words. Five years into my tenure here, they ring truer than ever. Students, faculty, staff, Jesuits and alumni embrace one another in a community of passion, respect, nurturing and discovery. It has always been this way, of course. Campus locations may change, buildings may rise and fall, new lands are added, new programs are launched, but community is at the heart of the Saint Joseph’s experience. I could not be more grateful for your participation in that community. Thanks to your ongoing and commendable generosity, we are poised to welcome future generations. It is not just Saint Joseph’s University that is developing and thriving — it is also the Saint Joseph’s University community. God’s blessings upon you and all of your loved ones. Gratefully, Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. President “ Campus locations may change, buildings may rise and fall, new lands are added, new programs are launched, but community is at the heart of the Saint Joseph’s experience.
