<strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s <strong>University</strong>’s progress<br />
over the last year is nothing short of<br />
remarkable. In virtually every corner<br />
of the campus, physical upgrades are<br />
transforming our facilities in<strong>to</strong> a stateof-the-art<br />
learning environment where<br />
the nurturing of mind, body <strong>and</strong> spirit<br />
is paramount. From Campion Student<br />
Center <strong>to</strong> the Michael J. Hagan ’85<br />
Arena, from the Science Center <strong>to</strong><br />
54th Street, <strong>and</strong> from Finnesey Field <strong>to</strong> the James J. Maguire ’58<br />
Campus, evidence of our momentum is plentiful.<br />
Moreover, the undeniably positive direction of the last year<br />
comprises so much more than new buildings <strong>and</strong> major<br />
renovations. Refinements <strong>to</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s academic offerings <strong>and</strong><br />
the addition of dozens of new faculty members speak <strong>to</strong> a commitment<br />
<strong>to</strong> scholarship. Presentations by world-renowned speakers in a<br />
variety of disciplines <strong>and</strong> continued enhancement of student<br />
programming increase campus vibrancy. Meaningful service–<br />
learning initiatives <strong>and</strong> immersion projects reflect spiritual power.<br />
All of these point <strong>to</strong> a <strong>University</strong> experience more comprehensive<br />
<strong>and</strong> fulfilling than at any time in <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s his<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />
Importantly, that his<strong>to</strong>ry keeps us firmly oriented <strong>to</strong>ward our<br />
mission, even in the midst of these changes. My colleagues on the<br />
Board of Trustees <strong>and</strong> I are unwavering in our commitment <strong>to</strong><br />
improve <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s in ways that extend our beloved <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
legacy. We are determined <strong>to</strong> continue enhancing an institution<br />
whose mission <strong>and</strong> values would be easily recognized by the<br />
pioneering Jesuits who founded it nearly 160 years ago.<br />
Perhaps most significantly, what is happening at <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s<br />
now — these his<strong>to</strong>ric changes, the realization of such potential —<br />
is fully in line with Plan 2010: The Path <strong>to</strong> Preeminence. This<br />
planning document, years in the making <strong>and</strong> the result of the<br />
combined efforts of every <strong>University</strong> constituency, set out several<br />
initiatives meant <strong>to</strong> steer us <strong>to</strong>ward our vision of recognized<br />
preeminence. These initiatives <strong>to</strong>uch every functional area of <strong>Saint</strong><br />
Joseph’s <strong>University</strong>, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s leadership has taken good<br />
care <strong>to</strong> ensure that our strategies <strong>and</strong> tactics reflect their goals.<br />
If the achievements noted on these pages are any indication — <strong>and</strong><br />
I believe they are — we have much <strong>to</strong> be proud of.<br />
More work remains, but I’m confident that the <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s<br />
we are building for the decades <strong>and</strong> generations <strong>to</strong> come will combine<br />
the very best of our his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> mission with thrilling opportunities<br />
we face. Like you, I am honored <strong>to</strong> be a part of this process.<br />
