Dear Friends,
Saint Joseph’s University’s progress
over the last year is nothing short of
remarkable. In virtually every corner
of the campus, physical upgrades are
transforming our facilities into a stateof-the-art
learning environment where
the nurturing of mind, body and spirit
is paramount. From Campion Student
Center to the Michael J. Hagan ’85
Arena, from the Science Center to
54th Street, and from Finnesey Field to the James J. Maguire ’58
Campus, evidence of our momentum is plentiful.
Moreover, the undeniably positive direction of the last year
comprises so much more than new buildings and major
renovations. Refinements to Saint Joseph’s academic offerings and
the addition of dozens of new faculty members speak to a commitment
to scholarship. Presentations by world-renowned speakers in a
variety of disciplines and continued enhancement of student
programming increase campus vibrancy. Meaningful service–
learning initiatives and immersion projects reflect spiritual power.
All of these point to a University experience more comprehensive
and fulfilling than at any time in Saint Joseph’s history.
Importantly, that history keeps us firmly oriented toward our
mission, even in the midst of these changes. My colleagues on the
Board of Trustees and I are unwavering in our commitment to
improve Saint Joseph’s in ways that extend our beloved University’s
legacy. We are determined to continue enhancing an institution
whose mission and values would be easily recognized by the
pioneering Jesuits who founded it nearly 160 years ago.
Perhaps most significantly, what is happening at Saint Joseph’s
now — these historic changes, the realization of such potential —
is fully in line with Plan 2010: The Path to Preeminence. This
planning document, years in the making and the result of the
combined efforts of every University constituency, set out several
initiatives meant to steer us toward our vision of recognized
preeminence. These initiatives touch every functional area of Saint
Joseph’s University, and the University’s leadership has taken good
care to ensure that our strategies and tactics reflect their goals.
If the achievements noted on these pages are any indication — and
I believe they are — we have much to be proud of.
More work remains, but I’m confident that the Saint Joseph’s
we are building for the decades and generations to come will combine
the very best of our history and mission with thrilling opportunities
we face. Like you, I am honored to be a part of this process.
