CONGRESSMEN PRESENT FUNDS FOR SCIENCE CENTER<br />

RENOVATIONS<br />

U.S. Congressmen Robert A. Brady (D-Pa.) <strong>and</strong> Jim Gerlach (R-Pa.)<br />

visited campus in March <strong>and</strong> presented a check for $800,000 from the U.S.<br />

Department of Energy <strong>to</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph‘s President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J.,<br />

<strong>to</strong> help fund the purchase of energy-efficient HVAC equipment <strong>and</strong> roofing<br />

for the <strong>University</strong>‘s Science Center.<br />

Brady <strong>and</strong> Gerlach were instrumental in securing the funding for the<br />

Science Center, home <strong>to</strong> the <strong>University</strong>‘s academic programs in chemistry,<br />

biology <strong>and</strong> physics, <strong>and</strong> designed <strong>to</strong> promote advanced <strong>and</strong> interdisciplinary<br />

learning <strong>and</strong> research for undergraduate <strong>and</strong> graduate students.<br />

“<strong>Saint</strong> Joseph‘s <strong>University</strong> has a proud tradition of providing a superb<br />

education <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>morrow‘s doc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> scientists,“ said Gerlach. “This<br />

funding will allow them <strong>to</strong> continue their great work at the Science Center,<br />

<strong>and</strong> ensure that they have the necessary facilities <strong>and</strong> resources <strong>to</strong> help<br />

<strong>to</strong>day‘s students become <strong>to</strong>morrow‘s leaders.“<br />

In accepting the check, Fr. Lannon said, “This grant will allow us <strong>to</strong> maximize<br />

the valuable space in this building for teaching <strong>and</strong> research. We are<br />

grateful <strong>to</strong> Congressman Brady <strong>and</strong> Congressman Gerlach for their efforts<br />

in securing the financial support for this very important initiative. They have<br />

been champions for the people of Pennsylvania <strong>and</strong> <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph‘s <strong>University</strong>.“<br />

MEN‘S BASKETBALL TEAM EARNS NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH<br />

<strong>With</strong> an experienced lineup that featured four returning starters,<br />

the <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph‘s men‘s basketball team made<br />

the final season at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse<br />

memorable. Head Coach Phil Martelli‘s squad<br />

reached the Atlantic 10 Conference title<br />

game for the third time in the past four<br />

years <strong>and</strong> garnered the program‘s<br />

19th NCAA Tournament berth, its first<br />

since 2004.<br />

Individual miles<strong>to</strong>nes were achieved<br />

as Martelli earned his 250th career win,<br />

while Pat Calathes ’08, Rob Ferguson<br />

’08 (B.A.) <strong>and</strong> Ahmad Nivins ’09<br />

(Jersey City, N.J.) each joined the 1,000point<br />

club <strong>and</strong> received All-Big 5 honors.<br />

Calathes also captured All-A-10 first team<br />

recognition, while Nivins was a third-team<br />

choice. The Crimson <strong>and</strong> Gray concluded<br />

the year with a record of 21-13.<br />

UNIVERSITY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES GAINS NEW LEADERSHIP<br />

In May, <strong>Saint</strong> Joseph’s <strong>University</strong>’s Board of Trustees elected four new<br />

members <strong>to</strong> four-year terms. The new trustees, which include A. Bruce<br />

Crawley ’67 (B.S.), Chris Furman ’81 (B.S.), Thomas P. Nerney, ’96 (M.B.A.)<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sen. Dominic Pileggi, Esq. ’79 (B.A.), began their terms in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber of 2008.<br />

Crawley is the president <strong>and</strong> principal<br />

owner of Millennium 3 Management, Inc., a<br />

full-service public relations, advertising <strong>and</strong><br />

corporate consulting firm based in Philadelphia.<br />

He previously spent 17 years as president<br />

of Crawley Haskins Sloan PR & Advertising.<br />

Crawley also founded Philadelphia’s African-<br />

American Chamber of Commerce, serving as its<br />

chairman for 13 years, <strong>and</strong> is politically involved<br />

providing media consulting <strong>to</strong> numerous<br />

elected officials. He holds a bachelor’s degree<br />

in marketing from SJU <strong>and</strong> a master’s degree Crawley ‘67<br />

in journalism from Temple <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Furman is president of PepsiCo Foodservice,<br />

a division that integrates the relevant units of<br />

Pepsi-Cola North America <strong>and</strong> Fri<strong>to</strong>-Lay North<br />

America <strong>to</strong>gether with Quaker, Tropicana <strong>and</strong><br />

Ga<strong>to</strong>rade in the United States. <strong>With</strong> 21 years<br />

of experience at PepsiCo, his diverse range of<br />

skills <strong>and</strong> expertise include <strong>to</strong>p-notch credentials<br />

in sales, marketing <strong>and</strong> general management.<br />

Furman resides in Rancho Margarita, Calif.,<br />

with his family.<br />

Nerney is chairman, president <strong>and</strong> chief Furman ‘81<br />

executive officer of United States Liability<br />

Insurance Group. He previously served as<br />

president <strong>and</strong> chief operating officer for<br />

Philadelphia Insurance Companies, where he<br />

was a part of senior management for 18<br />

years. As an active member of the Philadelphia<br />

community, Nerney has co-founded three<br />

local non-profit organizations. A graduate of<br />

Cabrini College, where he earned a bachelor’s<br />

degree in social science <strong>and</strong> philosophy, he<br />

received his M.B.A. from SJU in 1996.<br />

Pileggi is majority leader of the Pennsylvania Nerney ‘96<br />

Senate from the Ninth Sena<strong>to</strong>rial District,<br />

which includes parts of Chester <strong>and</strong> Delaware<br />

counties. He is responsible for coordinating<br />

the legislative agenda for the Senate, managing<br />

the legislative calendar on the Senate floor,<br />

<strong>and</strong> playing key roles in floor debates. Prior<br />

<strong>to</strong> his election <strong>to</strong> the Senate, Pileggi served as<br />

Mayor of the City of Chester from 1998 <strong>to</strong><br />

2002 <strong>and</strong> as Chester City councilman from<br />

1994 <strong>to</strong> 1998. Recognized by the community<br />

for his outst<strong>and</strong>ing leadership, Pileggi has<br />

received numerous honors <strong>and</strong> awards.<br />
