A walnut eight-day longcase clock
George Burges, London, movement and dial circa 1695,
the case later
The five finned pillar inside countwheel bell striking movement
with 11 inch square brass dial with ringed winding holes,
subsidiary seconds dial and triple-crown decorated engraved
calendar aperture to the matted centre within applied silvered
Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour
markers, Arabic five minutes to the narrow outer track and
signed Geo: Burges, London to lower edge, the angles with
winged cherub head and foliate cast spandrels, now in a case
with shallow domed caddy and gilt ball finials above foliate
pierced fretwork frieze and spiral twist three-quarter pilasters
to hood, convex moulded throat and rectangular book-matched
burr veneered trunk door within a crossbanded surround, the
side veneers divided into two panels by triple ebony and box line
borders, on conforming crossbanded plinth base with bun feet,
207cm (81.5ins) high.
George Burges appears not to be recorded however he was
probably related to one or more of the several makers sharing
the same surname who are listed as working in London during
the latter years of the 17th century. The triple crown decoration
to the matted centre of the current lot is thought to
commemorate the unification of the three Kingdoms of
England, Ireland and Scotland under William III. The case is of
relatively recent construction, however is well made using good
quality veneers and crossgrain mouldings and is of good
proportions.
