brass portable equinoctial sundial<br />

The square plate finely pieced and<br />

engraved with rococo scrolls and<br />

centred with glazed compass with<br />

silvered dial centred with a hatched<br />

windrose and the four Cardinal points<br />

annotated in German, beneath hinged<br />

cartouche ring centred with a folding<br />

plummet opposing a conforming hinged<br />

sight, the circular underside of the<br />

compass engraved with the latitudes of<br />

various Central European cities and<br />

signed J.N. Holderich, Augsburg within a<br />

herringbone border (latitude arm<br />

lacking), 8.5cm wide; with original<br />

printed paper instruction sheet in<br />

German and French incorporating a<br />

table annotated with the latitudes of<br />

approximately 150 towns and cities.<br />

The 12 inch circular plate fitted with a<br />

solid angled gnomen and centred with a<br />

sixteen point foliate engraved and<br />

hatched compass rose with annotations<br />

to the innermost track for the relevant<br />

subdivisions of the cardinal points,<br />

within a concentric table annotated for<br />

the equation of time interrupted by an<br />

oval signature cartouche W. Harris & Co.,<br />

50 Holborn, London, at twelve o’clock, the<br />

outer track engraved with a Roman<br />

numeral chapter ring annotated IIII-XII-<br />

VIII and with armorial crest to the vacant<br />

section (the gnomen probably a<br />

replacement).<br />

Down Bros., London, early 20th century<br />

With seven stainless steel scalpels, three clamps, a hook and two other items<br />

supported within two nickel finish lift-out trays in a box inset with ivorine maker’s<br />

labels DOWN BROS. MAKERS, OPPOSITE GUY’S HOSPITAL to front rail, the exterior<br />

with two inset brass straps flanking a shield shaped vacant cartouche, (some<br />

implements lacking), the box 24.5cm wide.<br />
