Principals Message:
We continue to work very hard on behalf of all the students at Bertrun E. Glavin.
October has been a busy month, students and staff have been very busy engaged in
so many wonderful teaching and learning opportunities.
Our Remembrance Day Assembly is quickly approaching on Friday, November 9 th at
10:40am. All parents, guardians and family members are welcome to attend.
Student report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, November 20 th . Student involved
conferences will be held on Thursday, November 22 nd in the evening from 4:00 - 8:00
pm, as well as Friday, November 23 rd from 9:00 - 11:30am. We are certainly looking
forward to meeting each of you and to celebrate your child(s) learning.
I would encourage all parents/guardians to visit the following website so you can
view the New Provincial Report Card that every student within River East Transcona
School Division will be receiving. The new report card can be viewed at:
http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/assess/report_cards/docs/pb_1-8.pdf
If you have any questions about the new report card, please contact me at the
school.
Staff have been working hard to set direction as it pertains to setting up the criteria
for our School Wide Theme of being Socially Responsible. At B.E. Glavin we are
committed to being SAFE, RESPECTFUL, AND RESPONSIBLE. A specific focus of our
teaching and learning will be determining and celebrating what it means to be a
“GATOR”, with regards to the values, beliefs and virtues that are commonly held and
shared here at Bertrun E. Glavin School.
We are working to provide an opportunity for all students and staff to purchase
School Clothing (GATOR WEAR). In the very near future, we are looking at selling
T-shirts (short and long sleeved), and hoodies, all with our exciting new logo. More
information will be sent out shortly, we are planning to have all clothing orders arrive
before Christmas.
Our next Parent Advisory Council Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 7 th
from 6:45 - 7:30pm in the library. Any parent/guardian interested in attending is
welcome. We continue to work on inviting parent volunteers into our school and
classroom to support the amazing teaching and learning that occurs each day. We
will also be looking to attract the help of volunteers who may have some time to give
towards creating props or costumes for our upcoming Christmas Concert.
Thank-you for your continued support, it has been a great start to the year!
Sincerely,
Mr. B. Locken

Call Back System Reminder
We have a “call back system” in place to help ensure the safety of our students.
The success of this program rests very much upon the co-operation of parents.
Please notify the school office (before 9am) each time a child is going to be absent or late.
The school office has an answering service so you can call at any time and leave a message.
Please keep your phone numbers up to date with the office to help us contact you easily.
NOTE:
Forgetting 3 times to notify the school that your child is going
to be absent or late will result in cancellation of your access
to the call back program.
The office number is 204-669-1277.
Thank you for helping us keep your children safe!
ALLERGY ALERT - Our School is Nut Free
There are students/ teachers with life threatening allergies in the school. We would like to ask all
families to consider the following in the interest of safety for these students:
Nuts are the most common allergen in the school (especially peanuts).
Check the labels on food products that are sent to school (avoid nut products).
Because nuts can cause Severe, Life-Threatening reactions in some people, we ask that you adopt
the following food guidelines
1. When packing your child’s lunch/snacks:
DO NOT send food items that contain nuts or prepared in peanut oils.
DO NOT send peanut butter/ Nutella sandwiches to school.
2. WASH YOUR HANDS if you eat nuts or nut products before coming/returning to school.
3. Store bought goods MUST BE pre-packaged with a clearly marked manufacturer’s
ingredient list indicating that it does not contain nuts.
4. Home-baked goods SHOULD NOT contain nuts and should not
be prepared where nuts/nut products are stored or chopped.
Safety Over Convenience is the Key
Recently we have had concerns expressed about people parking or stopping in illegal zones at and near the
school. Traffic control signs are posted in the following areas:
Ø Parking Lot - Do Not Enter
The parking lot is designated for staff and school buses only.
Please DO NOT enter the parking lot or use the parking lot entrance
to turn around on Antrim.
Ø South Side of Antrim Road (in front of the school) - School Bus Loading Zone - No Parking
Vehicles are not allowed to stop/park AT ALL in this zone.
No Parking/ Stopping from 7:30am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday, September - June.
Ø South Side of Antrim Road (East side of parking lot driveway) – No Parking – Loading Zone
Indicating that you can only stop briefly to drop off/ pick up children. DO NOT park.
Ø North Side of Antrim Road - No Parking - From 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday, Sept. - June.
Dropping off your children on this side means they have to cross a busy street in the middle
of the block without the benefits of patrols. This is not a safe!
Please drop off/ pick up only on the south side of Antrim or
at an intersection where your child can cross with patrols.
Ø We ask all families for their support and cooperation in keeping our children safe.
Please keep the above in mind for all future events at the school.
The school has been advised by community neighbours that they will call tow trucks if
people are incorrectly parked.
Safety Reminder
It is not safe for students to be on school grounds before 8:45am and 12:35pm, as
there is no supervision before these times.
Please arrange for your children to arrive at school between 8:45-8:55am and between
12:35-12:45pm. Teachers and staff are on duty outside to supervise the playground at
8:45am and 12:35pm.
It is also very important that children are picked up after school at 3:25pm as there will be no supervision on
the school grounds after that time.
Lost & Found
Every year we have unmarked clothing and supplies that find their way to our Lost & Found.
All items brought/ worn to school need to be clearly labeled in order to be returned to their rightful owner.
Our Lost & Found box is located in the hallway be-side the Library. Parents are encouraged to check the box
regularly. Items of value, such as jewellery, glasses, etc. are kept in the
office.

Mr. Locken’s Lemonade Party!
Students will continue to work towards earning
invitations to bi-monthly Lemonade Parties this
year!
Students at Bertrun E. Glavin have been making
the selection process to the Lemonade Parties
very difficult for the teachers. Students can earn
an invitation to sit with Mr. Locken on Friday and
enjoy a cool glass of lemonade and conversation
with students from each of the classrooms from
every grade level. The criteria for selection is
very simple, students can be recognized for any special effort, accomplishment or act of
kindness that stands out in their teachers mind.
Keep working hard and maybe it will be you at the next Lemonade Party!
Remembrance Day Assembly
We will hold our annual Remembrance Day Service on Thursday,
November 9 th at 10:40am. Students will reflect on the meaning of
Remembrance Day, honouring and thanking the many soldiers who
fought for human rights.
Kindergarten AM Love their Reading Buddies
The morning Kindergarten class and the grade 4 students enjoy each others company and
reading skills during our monthly Buddy reading. The younger students are always very
excited to spend time with a grade 4 buddy.

Flag Football Tournament
Congratulations to all of the grade four and five students that participated in this year's
Divisional Flag Football Tournament.
Our students had the opportunity to learn a new game, demonstrate fair play and team
work, and most of all have FUN!!
Our athletes braved the cool temperatures for over 5 hours as they participated in a total
of six games against other schools in our division.
Our students were safe, respectful & responsible!
Way to be Great Gators! We are proud of you!

Patrol of the Month!
Our patrols have been hard at work during the first part of the
school year. As part of our patrol program this year we are
selecting patrols of the month. These patrols are selected by
the adult patrol supervisors and the patrol captains.
We would like to congratulate the following patrols of the month for September:
Nickalas, Abby, Christofour and Aiden.
Thank you for your hard work and leadership. Keep up the good work patrols.
2012-2013 Bertrun E. Glavin School Safety Patrols
The students of Bertrun E. Glavin want to give the patrols a great big THANK YOU! They
appreciate the patrols for their patience and politeness. They like how patrols always watch
for cars and only let them cross when it is safe and they like that the patrols are always
there on time. The Kindergartens would also love to thank the Kindergarten Patrols for all
of their support and guidance! Keep up the fantastic work!
As the cold weather approaches, patrols are reminded to dress warmly by wearing a hat,
mitts, boots and ski pants. Patrols need to listen each day for the weather and follow the
Inclement Weather Guidelines.
-27 °C to –34 °C
It is recommended that the time on post not exceed 10 minutes. Warm clothing is essential.
Facial protection is recommended.
-34 °C to –42 °C
Anti-bullying at BEG
On October 25, 2012 the Winnipeg Police Association,
supported by corporate sponsors, presented the Cool 2
Be Kind program to our grades 1 – 3 students. The
anti-bullying message focuses on being kind to others.
Remembrance Day Service
Music Notes!
Our annual Remembrance Day Service will be held on Friday, November 9 th , at 10:40 a.m. in
the Gym. “Garfield and Friends,” our Gr. 3/4T and 4A Choir, will be singing the song, “Heart
to Heart” and “Snoopy’s Gang,” our Gr. 4/5S and 5A Choir, will perform “One World.”
Parents, relatives and friends are welcome to attend.
Grade 1’s Keep the Beat!
One of the first concepts/skills that our Grade 1 students practise in Grade 1 Music is finding
the beat of a song and keeping a steady beat in a variety of ways. Pictured below, you see
some of our 1A students from Mrs. Hlady’s classroom playing the rhythm sticks on the beat
while the class is singing along with a recording of a Reggae piece entitled “Back to School.”
4A Canadian Studies
This year in our grade 4 social studies class we are learning about the geographic regions in
Canada. There are six regions the Cordillera, The Appalachian, The Interior Plains, Canadian
Shield, The Arctic and St. Lawrence Lowlands. We have watched a movie and read about
the regions. We have learned many interesting facts. Did you know that Mount Logan is
the tallest mountain in Canada? The Arctic is so cold that it is impossible for tress to grow in
that region, but some plants have adapted to the weather. We live in the Interior Plains,
which has good farm land. We are learning so much and hope to share our learning with
others.
