Teaching Excellence<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> has a long tradition <strong>of</strong> delivering teacher education though primary and secondary<br />
courses. <strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s PGCE courses have now been renamed Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary<br />
<strong>Education</strong> (Qualified Teacher Status) and Postgraduate Diploma in Primary <strong>Education</strong> (PGCE<br />
Advanced) to reflect the higher level <strong>of</strong> credit awarded for these programmes. With over 2,500<br />
students studying at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> annually on its courses, the <strong>School</strong>’s teaching and<br />
research programmes are characterised by their diversity and include:<br />

OFSTED recognises the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>’s<br />
outstanding teacher training<br />
OFSTED has given a glowing<br />
recommendation to the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s primary and secondary<br />
school teacher training after a<br />
recent inspection <strong>of</strong> provision.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
primary and secondary teacher<br />
education to more than 350 students<br />
and is renowned as a major<br />
innovative centre for teacher training<br />
and development located within one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the UK’s top research Universities.<br />
In the most recent inspection report,<br />
an outstanding grade was awarded<br />
10 SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | BRINGING VISION AND VALUES TO LIFE<br />
across all areas <strong>of</strong> provision, one <strong>of</strong><br />
the few Universities in the country to<br />
receive this highest accolade. Praise<br />
was given to the ‘exceptionally high<br />
level <strong>of</strong> consistency that exists across<br />
the training programmes ensuring<br />
outstanding equality <strong>of</strong> opportunity’<br />
for students.<br />
Dr Stephanie Prestage, who led the<br />
team during the inspection<br />
commented: “At the <strong>University</strong> we<br />
work hard to sustain an outstanding<br />
teacher training programme<br />
developed in partnership with local<br />
schools that combines practical<br />
experience with a strong research<br />
component. We are able to draw<br />
on the outstanding research<br />
expertise within the department<br />
to ensure our courses are cutting<br />
edge.”
