Outstanding Professional Staff Support for Undergraduate Studies The School would like to congratulate Dr Magdalena Skrybant for her work as Programme Team Leader on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Education and Social Justice, including the BA Childhood, Culture Government-funded project to boost recruitment of male teachers in primary and early years education The relatively low number of male teachers in primary schools has increasingly become seen by governments across the western world as a cause for real concern, particularly in the area of early years teaching. Recent applications to courses in the UK have seen some increase in the number of male candidates but there is still real concern about retention rates. In a Teaching and Development Agency (TDA) funded research project led by the School of Education’s Dr Christine Szwed, the project team aimed to identify successful strategies in the recruitment, selection and retention of males onto primary and early years initial teacher training programmes. One of the key findings was that individual and targeted support was a crucial factor in retention. The School of Education has initiated several measures in response to this research and both recruitment and retention rates for male trainees are now above national averages. Many male trainees have achieved exceptional results on the programme. Adam Ramli, a recent student has received the Elizabeth Cadbury Award for the best written work on a postgraduate taught programme having achieved a merit for all of his assignments on the PGDip programme. He was also graded as outstanding in his teaching performance by the External Examiner. Adam says of his experiences on the course: “There is a deep appreciation and understanding by all members of the Primary Initial Teaching Education team as to the diversity of student learning needs and the guidance and encouragement that students require not only on an academic level, but also personally.” 14 SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | BRINGING VISION AND VALUES TO LIFE and Education programme. Magda’s dedication, diligence and exemplary work ethic in all that she does are commendable. She always puts the need of the student first, and has contributed greatly to the successes achieved by the School in these areas.
Research Excellence With over 100 lecturing and research staff, the School undertakes projects funded and commissioned by a range of organisations including schools, local authorities, charities, industry, research councils and UK and international government departments. The School has a history of 5 star rated research and in the 2008 Research Excellence Exercise (RAE), 80% of its work was recognised as being of international quality.
