Chris Unwin completed his degree and a PGCE at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />

and then returned to complete an MEd in Teaching Studies part time while<br />

pursuing his full time career as an English teacher. He enjoyed the<br />

independence and appreciated the support he got while working on his<br />

research project. His research focus was on the barriers to education <strong>of</strong><br />

vulnerable children in Zambia and is hoping to disseminate the results <strong>of</strong> his<br />

research with relevant charities.<br />

Danyal Farsani is a PhD student researching multimodal mathematical<br />

meaning in multilingual classrooms. This interdisciplinary research project<br />

involves looking at the experiences that Farsi/English bilingual learners have<br />

in learning mathematics in different kinds <strong>of</strong> settings. Danyal presented a<br />

paper at the International Mathematics <strong>Education</strong> Conference in Seoul,<br />

Korea in July 2012.<br />

Student Voices<br />

Farhat Mushtaq successfully completed her teacher training in Modern<br />

Languages with the <strong>School</strong> and was awarded the Elaine Hurman Prize for<br />

her excellent work to promote pupils’ use <strong>of</strong> the target language in class.<br />

She has been promoted to Head <strong>of</strong> Department in her school and is about<br />

to start studying for an MEd in Teaching Studies at the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>.<br />

Jess Whiting is in her second year <strong>of</strong> study on the Childhood, Culture and<br />

<strong>Education</strong> programme, which has enabled her to develop arguments,<br />

analytical skills and an interest in education policy. Jess has nearly completed<br />

the Personal Skills Award (Advanced) through being the president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

education society, raising students’ aspirations as an ambassador,<br />

volunteering on a play-scheme for children with disabilities, and in a special<br />

school. She also volunteered at a primary school in Tanzania this summer.<br />

Kate Miles has recently completed her second year on the Childhood, Culture<br />

and <strong>Education</strong> programme, which has allowed her to cover a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />

subjects relating to children and to pursue elements <strong>of</strong> interest for her essays.<br />

Kate is working towards the Personal Skills Award and has undertaken a two<br />

week placement working directly with children. She has also worked as a<br />

student ambassador for the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and been a student<br />

representative for her year <strong>of</strong> study. Kate is looking to undertake a PGCE in<br />

Primary <strong>Education</strong> and has already been <strong>of</strong>fered a place on the Teach First<br />

Leadership Development Programme for 2013.<br />

James Bott was recommended to study to become a physics teacher by a<br />

friend who had recently completed his initial teacher training with the<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong>. He comments: “I contacted the Physics course tutor,<br />

John Kirkman who <strong>of</strong>fered me plenty <strong>of</strong> support and practical advice which<br />

really encouraged me. He also gave me lots <strong>of</strong> ideas to explore prior to<br />

joining the course, which have since proved invaluable.” James is now<br />

employed as a Physics teacher.<br />
