School <strong>of</strong> Music, Faculty <strong>of</strong> the VCA <strong>and</strong> Music<br />
For the 2010 intake, the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music<br />
Performance will be <strong>of</strong>fered for students<br />
wishing to specialise in Improvisation.<br />
Entry to the degree requires an audition<br />
on your main instrument, <strong>and</strong> an interview.<br />
Applicants are required to prepare two<br />
contrasting works which demonstrate their<br />
skills as performers <strong>and</strong> improvisers.<br />
Applicants are also required to submit<br />
a 100-word statement outlining <strong>music</strong>al<br />
goals, undergo a Performance Related<br />
Studies test (viva voce format) <strong>and</strong> are<br />
asked to sight-read a short melodic piece<br />
as well as a rhythmical piece.<br />
Auditions <strong>and</strong> interviews are conducted in<br />
November.<br />

On 6 April 2009, the Faculty <strong>of</strong> the VCA <strong>and</strong> Music was established from the former Faculty <strong>of</strong> Music <strong>and</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> the Victorian<br />
College <strong>of</strong> the Arts. The integration <strong>of</strong> these two faculties resulted in the creation <strong>of</strong> a single School <strong>of</strong> Music at The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Melbourne</strong>. The strengths <strong>of</strong> two nationally prominent <strong>music</strong> schools have now joined to form the largest university School <strong>of</strong> Music in<br />
Australia.<br />
The School <strong>of</strong> Music <strong>of</strong>fers outst<strong>and</strong>ing nationally <strong>and</strong> internationally recognised programs <strong>of</strong> the highest quality in performance,<br />
improvisation, composition, <strong>music</strong>ology, ethno<strong>music</strong>ology, <strong>music</strong> education <strong>and</strong> <strong>music</strong> therapy.<br />
The School also provides a variety <strong>of</strong> pathways into pr<strong>of</strong>essional graduate coursework programs, <strong>and</strong> strengthens interaction with the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>and</strong> with research <strong>and</strong> research higher degree education, locally, nationally <strong>and</strong> internationally.<br />
