Creating a world <strong>of</strong> career<br />

opportunities<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Production<br />

have a tradition <strong>of</strong> high employment<br />

success.<br />

Graduates demonstrate capacities<br />

for artistic imagination, creativity,<br />

transformation <strong>and</strong> interpretation. They<br />

work at various levels, both as an individual<br />

<strong>and</strong> as a team member, in a wide variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>visual</strong>/<strong>performing</strong> <strong>arts</strong> environments<br />

including large-scale events such as the<br />

Olympic Games <strong>and</strong> Commonwealth<br />

Games opening ceremonies, major<br />

festivals, subsidised theatre, dance <strong>and</strong><br />

opera companies, <strong>and</strong> commercial theatre.<br />

Students are encouraged to make links<br />

with other students both within Production<br />

as well as in other artistic disciplines,<br />

which <strong>of</strong>ten lead to long-term collaborative<br />

partnerships. Most graduates become<br />

employed in the industry on a freelance<br />

basis, <strong>of</strong>ten initially in an assistant capacity,<br />

in their field <strong>of</strong> specialisation.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> international<br />

degree recognition<br />

Courses at the Faculty <strong>of</strong> the VCA <strong>and</strong><br />

Music enjoy wide recognition among the<br />

international <strong>arts</strong> community. The Faculty<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> the European League <strong>of</strong><br />

Institutes <strong>of</strong> the Arts (ELIA), the International<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts Deans (ICFAD), <strong>and</strong> is<br />

an international affiliate <strong>of</strong> the Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Independent Colleges <strong>of</strong> Art <strong>and</strong> Design.<br />

Honours<br />

The one-year Honours program is available<br />

following the successful completion <strong>of</strong><br />

the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Production or equivalent.<br />

The Honours year is designed to highachieving<br />

students the opportunity to further<br />

develop their artistic practice as well as their<br />

analytical, critical <strong>and</strong> research skills. As an<br />

Honours student, you will further develop<br />

your ability to participate effectively <strong>and</strong><br />

collaboratively on a production. The course<br />

is also designed to produce students who<br />

are able to work creatively at a senior level in<br />

a production team, either as a designer or in<br />

the technical crafts.<br />

The Honours program (Production<br />

Placement) builds on knowledge,<br />

experience <strong>and</strong> skills developed in the<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Production in the student’s field<br />

<strong>of</strong> specialisation (set, costume, lighting <strong>and</strong><br />

sound design, or the allied crafts). Each<br />

student will be assigned at least two major<br />

productions drawn from the production<br />

schedule. They will be assigned in senior<br />

roles as either part <strong>of</strong> the creative team, or<br />

as leaders in the technical <strong>and</strong> craft areas.<br />

Each student will also complete an Honours<br />

Research Thesis in an area <strong>of</strong> enquiry<br />

pertaining to their chosen field <strong>of</strong> study. In<br />

consultation with their supervisor; through<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> research methods classes, the<br />

student will develop a research question or<br />

hypothesis, conduct a literature review in<br />

relation to this question <strong>and</strong> then research<br />

<strong>and</strong> submit a paper interrogating this<br />

hypothesis.<br />

Graduate study opportunities<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Production<br />

have the opportunity to extend their study<br />

through graduate, Masters (research or<br />

coursework) <strong>and</strong> PhD programs. Graduate<br />

study is available in various roles <strong>of</strong><br />

performance production including set,<br />

costume, lighting <strong>and</strong> sound design, stage<br />

<strong>and</strong> production management.<br />

Production students also have access to<br />

highly regarded international <strong>arts</strong> institutions<br />

around the world for the purposes <strong>of</strong><br />

academic exchange, artistic practice <strong>and</strong><br />

research collaboration.<br />

Production graduates are well placed<br />

to apply for graduate pr<strong>of</strong>essional entry<br />

programs at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> in<br />

a range <strong>of</strong> areas including law, teaching <strong>and</strong><br />
