From 2011, undergraduate studies in<br />

<strong>music</strong>, <strong>visual</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>performing</strong> <strong>arts</strong> will be<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered as <strong>Melbourne</strong> Model degrees.<br />

Undergraduate studies in Music will<br />

be combined into a single Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />

Music, <strong>of</strong>fering specialisations in Music<br />

Performance, Improvisation, Composition<br />

English language<br />

requirements<br />

All applicants must satisfy the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

English language requirements in order to<br />

be eligible to be <strong>of</strong>fered a place.<br />

All applicants who use an Australian Year<br />

12, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma<br />

or the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> NCEA for the purposes<br />

<strong>of</strong> entry must have completed Year 12, IB<br />

Diploma or NCEA Level 3 English studies<br />

to a specified level to be considered for<br />

entry to any course. This applies regardless<br />

<strong>of</strong> whether or not English is a compulsory<br />

subject within the qualification.<br />

Access <strong>Melbourne</strong> – special<br />

entry scheme<br />

Enhance your opportunity for selection <strong>and</strong><br />

a scholarship by applying for the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong>’s combined special entry <strong>and</strong><br />

access scholarships scheme.<br />

In 2010, 20 per cent <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s new<br />

undergraduate Commonwealth supported<br />

places will be <strong>of</strong>fered to students who<br />

have applied through Access <strong>Melbourne</strong>.<br />

In addition, many <strong>of</strong> these students will be<br />

awarded a <strong>Melbourne</strong> Access Scholarship.<br />

There are a number <strong>of</strong> categories under<br />

which Access <strong>Melbourne</strong> applicants may<br />

apply:<br />

> non-English speaking background<br />

> recognition as an Indigenous Australian<br />

> difficult family circumstances<br />

> disadvantaged socioeconomic<br />

background<br />

> rural or isolated<br />

> under-represented school<br />

<strong>and</strong> Musicology/Ethno<strong>music</strong>ology.<br />

Undergraduate studies in Visual <strong>and</strong><br />

Performing Arts will be <strong>of</strong>fered within the<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts Q , with major areas<br />

<strong>of</strong> study in Art, Dance, Film <strong>and</strong> Television,<br />

Production <strong>and</strong> Theatre.<br />

Under the <strong>Melbourne</strong> Model, the emphasis<br />

is on in-depth studies in a chosen discipline<br />

as well as breadth studies, so that<br />

> personal disability or long-term medical<br />

condition<br />

> refugee status<br />

> mature-age consideration (non-school<br />

leaver entry pathway).<br />

You must complete the relevant application<br />

forms in VTAC’s Special Entry Access<br />

Schemes (SEAS) Access <strong>and</strong> Equity<br />

process. SEAS information booklets are<br />

Non-school leaver applicants<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> is committed<br />

to significantly increasing the participation<br />

<strong>of</strong> students from diverse backgrounds<br />

<strong>and</strong> welcomes applications from nonschool<br />

leavers. Applicants who don’t<br />

meet the st<strong>and</strong>ard entry requirements for<br />

undergraduate courses may be eligible<br />

for entry using the non-school leaver entry<br />

pathway.<br />

To be eligible for this pathway, applicants<br />

must: be 23 years or older; be an Australian<br />

or New Zeal<strong>and</strong> citizen or Australian<br />

permanent resident or holder <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Permanent Humanitarian Visa; <strong>and</strong> have<br />

no qualifications from the past seven years<br />

which could be used as a basis for selection.<br />

Applicants for this pathway will need to:<br />

> meet course prerequisites;<br />

> meet any other extra course<br />

requirements; <strong>and</strong><br />

> complete a general aptitude test or<br />

complete Community Access Program<br />

(CAP) subjects.<br />

graduates have the broad knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

practical experience required to become<br />

creative practitioners <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />

The curriculum <strong>of</strong> these two courses<br />

is currently under development. When<br />

Q Pending approval by Academic Board<br />

All applicants under the non-school leaver<br />

entry pathway are required to:<br />

> achieve competitive results in the Special<br />

Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (both<br />

sections); or<br />

> achieve competitive results in the<br />

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) (all<br />

sections); or<br />

> achieve competitive results in 50 points<br />

(typically four subjects) <strong>of</strong> study in<br />

assessed mode through CAP.<br />

Deferral<br />

Applications to defer the <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> a place<br />

in <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> <strong>music</strong>, <strong>visual</strong><br />

or <strong>performing</strong> <strong>arts</strong> courses will not be<br />

accepted in 2010. Information about the<br />

Transferring<br />

To apply to transfer from another tertiary<br />

institution you need to submit an application<br />

through VTAC. To be eligible to transfer,<br />

you must meet the course prerequisites.<br />

It is important to check in advance the<br />

requirements for transferring from one<br />

course to another to get a realistic idea <strong>of</strong><br />

the chances <strong>of</strong> success <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the level<br />

<strong>of</strong> academic achievement required. Your<br />

application will be assessed based on your<br />

entire academic record.<br />
