The most important walkability factors selected by the <strong>Penetanguishene</strong><br />

group (Score: 33) were:<br />

1. Do walking Trails exist?<br />

2. Do walking trails link or connect with one another and other active<br />

transportation infrastructure (sidewalks, etc.)?<br />

3. Does your community have an <strong>of</strong>ficial pedestrian and/or Active<br />

Transportation plan?<br />

4. Are walking trails clearly marked with appropriate signage and<br />

directions?<br />

5. Can streets be easily, safely and conveniently crossed?<br />

<strong>Town</strong>ship <strong>of</strong> <strong>Springwater</strong><br />

The group from the <strong>Town</strong>ship <strong>of</strong> <strong>Springwater</strong> also ranked walkability as their<br />

highest AT component, awarding it a score <strong>of</strong> 48/100. They ranked five<br />

components <strong>of</strong> the community as Excellent, ranking an additional six as Very<br />

Good. Only five factors were ranked Fair, and two <strong>of</strong> these were given a<br />

score <strong>of</strong> “2.5” rather than “2”. At the lower end <strong>of</strong> the scale, two elements<br />

were ranked Poor, while seven received a score <strong>of</strong> zero: Very Poor.<br />

The components <strong>of</strong> the community that the group ranked Excellent, with a<br />

score <strong>of</strong> four, were:<br />

� Are sightlines sufficient to see and be seen by cars?<br />

� Do drivers „respect‟ walkers?<br />

� Do printed trail guides and maps exist and are they easily accessible?<br />

� Are there active transportation community based organizations such<br />

as walking/hiking clubs, etc?<br />

The factors that ranked Very Poor, with a score <strong>of</strong> zero, were:<br />

� Where sidewalks do not exist are pedestrians given consideration<br />

through reduced speed limits and/or traffic calming measures?<br />

� Are there separations between pedestrians and fast traffic (greater<br />

than 60km/h)?<br />
