Town of Penetanguishene
Penetanguishene is the most urban of three communities that took part in this
workshop, and has by far the smallest geographic area to consider. That
could be both an advantage and a disadvantage as the group discovered
during their mapping exercise. On the one hand, it meant that they had much
shorter distances, usually, between AT destinations. On the other hand, the
population concentration of the town meant that there were possible
destinations everywhere in the community.
Penetanguishene brought a strong team to the workshop, with the Mayor,
CAO, two councillors, Engineer, and Manager of Recreation Services in
attendance.
I was particularly impressed with their candid appraisal of the suitability of
their community for AT. They rated their walkability and bikeability lower than
either of the townships, and were open with acknowledging any deficiencies
they themselves identified. They also used the opportunity to discuss
possible solutions.
Like Tiny Township, Penetanguishene came up with a list of seven action
items when asked for five. Again, like Tiny, their list was quite specific and
appeared, in the most part, entirely achievable within the six month
timeframe.
One item, the goal of an off-road trail link to Awenda Provincial Park is
interesting in that most of this route would actually be outside of the Town of
