B. The Walkabout:<br />

Following the introductory presentations, a number <strong>of</strong> workshop participants<br />

headed outside onto the streets <strong>of</strong> Elmvale to examine the local walking and<br />

cycling infrastructure, and compare what they were seeing on the ground with<br />

what had been presented in the previous sessions. The session facilitator,<br />

Michael Haynes, pointed out various examples <strong>of</strong> Active Transportation<br />

infrastructure, while encouraging participants to discuss whether they found<br />

what they were observing to be adequate or to require some improvement.<br />

The Walkabout began in the parking lot <strong>of</strong> the Elmvale Community Arena.<br />

Here participants examined the pedestrian pad at the front entrance, the bike<br />

racks to the northwest <strong>of</strong> the main doors, and the wheelchair access ramp.<br />

They also reviewed pedestrian access and the crosswalk situation at the<br />

main entrance on George Street.<br />

From here, the group proceeded on George Street to Yonge Street North. En<br />

route, the condition <strong>of</strong> sidewalk snow removal was discussed, in particular the<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> drainage on sidewalks. At the intersection <strong>of</strong> George and Yonge, there<br />

was discussion <strong>of</strong> the parking area for the Foodland store, and <strong>of</strong> the lack <strong>of</strong><br />

designated crossings on Yonge Street. Comment was made how busy this<br />

section <strong>of</strong> the street was for pedestrians and how the construction <strong>of</strong> new<br />
