One of the only major differences in opinion was in the two group‟s appraisal
of Balm Beach Road from Midland to the trail. One group considered it to be
a good route currently, while the other identified it as a dangerous gap area.
In discussion, both groups agreed that it was a well-travelled AT route
currently that urgently needed paved shoulders and signage.
The group evaluating the map of the community began by identifying possible
AT destinations, dabbing each with a dot from a blue marker. Within a very
few moments, their map looked as if it had developed blue measles, and the
group declared that, in fact, there was really no part of the town that was not
a possible destination for Active Transportation.
They moved to the next step, which they also found to not require too much
time, and that was to indicate the existing safe routes for AT. Although there
was some discussion within the group about what might have made a
particular route safe or unsafe, in the end they marked the off-road trail
system, and a few, usually non-main, streets.
In the next step, marking gap areas, they found that the group considered the
majority of the main streets to be unsafe for cycling, and the topography and
steep hills to represent a barrier to walking. Fuller Avenue, Brunelle Side
Road, Champlain Road, much of Robert Street East, and some of Fox Street
were unsuitable because of lack of infrastructure; Don and Yeo streets were
problems because of the steep climb required.
