Sunset over Santa Maria della Salute, Venice Venice is one of the most musical cities in the world and when combined with its other wealth of treasures we have something splendid. From Vivaldi to Verdi our musical programme will include great works of early music to the golden age of opera. Where better to listen to such inspiring works than in the places they were written or performed. Local musicians and our own London Festival Opera will perform in churches and magnificent palaces. In the beautiful Palazzo Zen, London Festival Opera will perform by candlelight allowing us to appreciate a spectacle of the past as hundreds of candles illuminate the dazzling architecture and art. There are of course many splendid hotels in Venice. However, being very much a water city we believe that having our own floating hotel will be a great advantage. The MS Michelangelo is a very comfortable vessel and is perfect for our needs. The mooring site of the vessel in Venice is ideal and only a short walk from St Mark’s Square allowing for after dinner strolls and individual exploration. Using the vessel as our base also allows us to offer such a tour at less than half the cost than if we were based in a good centrally located hotel. Although the vessel accommodates up to 140 passengers, we are limiting numbers for this tour to 120 due to the size of some of the venues we will be visiting. We have purposely planned our trip later in the year to avoid the tourist high season months when the crowds of day trippers descend in their masses. In addition to the music programme we have arranged a number of excursions both in the city and beyond and together with our local guides we can promise you a very special time in the glorious most serene republic. Page 18 • 020-7752 0000 The Music of La Serenissima SIX NIGHTS IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY ON EARTH ABOARD THE MS MICHELANGELO 29th October to 4th November 2013 Antonio Viv aldi The Itinerary Day 1 London Gatwick or Manchester to Venice. Fly by scheduled direct flight from Gatwick or indirect scheduled flight from Manchester. On arrival transfer to the MS Michelangelo moored in the city. Welcome drinks and dinner this evening will be followed by a performance onboard by London Festival Opera. Day 2 La Fenice Opera House, St Mark’s Square & La Pieta Church. This morning we will take a leisurely stroll with our knowledgeable local guide to the famous newly restored grand La Fenice Opera House for an interior visit, where we will have plenty of time here before walking back to the MS Michelangelo. After lunch on board there will be an optional tour to St. Mark’s Square which was the political and religious centre of the city when La Serenissima ruled an empire. Here with your guide you will visit the Doge’s Palace that housed the private residence of the Doge, the seat of government and the Court of Justice. Continue to St. Mark’s Cathedral, a magnificent building built on the plan of a Greek cross. Inside the cathedral you can admire the famous mosaics. Later this afternoon we have arranged for an exclusive private concert of Vivaldi themed music performed by a local Venetian orchestra in Chiesa della Pieta, the church where Vivaldi composed the Four Seasons. Day 3 Hidden Venice & Palazzo Zen. After breakfast we embark on a walking tour to discover the hidden corners of Venice. We will walk through the Arsenale, a colossal shipyard of the Serenissima Republic; the San Giorgio dei Greci church and its secret courtyard; Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of the city’s largest squares and perhaps the most Venetian place in town; and Marco Polo’s House, before we reach the famous Rialto bridge. Here you will have time to stroll around the market square. We return to the ship for lunch and have a free afternoon to relax or explore further independently. After an early dinner on our vessel we will travel by water taxis to Palazzo Zen to enjoy a concert by London Festival Opera. We have hired the atmospheric Palazzo for the evening which will be lit by candlelight and which will be acoustically perfect for the performance. During the evening we will enjoy Venetian canapes and refreshments including of course some Italian Prosecco. Day 4 Verona. Join the full day trip to the mysterious city of Verona, mysterious because its early history still remains largely unknown and is surrounded by many theories. Your knowledgeable local guide will walk you through the city’s streets and highlights include a visit to the famous Roman amphitheatre, completed around 30 A.D. and the third largest in Italy after Rome’s Colosseum. Lunch is at a local restaurant and the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy this medieval city. Enjoy dinner onboard and an evening at leisure. Day 5 Vicenza & Villa Barbaro, Maser. This morning depart by coach for the cosmopolitan city of Vicenza, steeped in a rich history and culture. On a walking tour of this beautiful city you will visit the magnificent Olympic Theatre, built between 1580 and 1585; it is the oldest surviving enclosed theatre in the world. The tour continues into the heart of Vicenza, to the enchanting Piazza dei Signori where the unmistakable Palladian Basilica stands out. You will have free time here before a scenic drive through the charming Treviso countryside to Maser. Enjoy lunch and wine tasting at the restaurant of the Villa Barbaro, one of Andrea Palladio’s masterpieces, still a working home and farm, where wines are produced and exported globally.
After lunch, you will have free time to discover this beautiful villa and its wonderful Renaissance works. On day 4 or 5 we hope to be able to offer you the opportunity to attend an optional evening performance at one of Venice’s theatres. This is dependent on the theatre schedules and availability and more details will be available within 3 months of departure. Day 6 Artisans of Venice & Ca Rezzonico. Today enjoy a full day tour by private motor launch visiting the three most beautiful islands of the lagoon. You will pass many of the 40 picturesque islands that surround the Venetian Lagoon visiting Murano, renowned since 1291 for its glass manufacture; here you will witness masters of this delicate craft at work during a visit to a leading factory. Continue to Burano, a tiny island dotted with brightly painted houses. Its fame is due to traditional lace making, an art still practiced by many of the local women. There will be time to wander and browse the little shops of this cheerful fishing village before heading to Torcello, once the most populated of the early lagoon communities but nowadays the most peaceful. We will stop here for lunch before taking a pleasant stroll to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assumpta, built in the 7th century. This evening we board water taxis to take us to Ca Rezzonico, regarded as one of Venice’s premier museums. Arriving after closing time we have exclusive hire of the museum and on arrival will enjoy a welcome drink, a selection of cheeses, nibbles and canapes. There will be time to explore the rooms before a private concert by London Festival Opera in the beautiful ballroom. Local experts and museum staff will accompany us for the evening and be on hand to discuss the history of the museum. After the concert there will be a farewell cocktail and Italian buffet style meal before we return to the vessel by water taxi. Day 7 Venice to London Gatwick or Manchester. After breakfast on board we will disembark and return to the airport for the scheduled direct flight to London Gatwick or indirect flight to Manchester. She has recently been refurbished and as one of the few vessels on the Venetian waterways, this is a unique and ideal base for our stay. Air conditioned throughout, the vessel is bright and airy, and beautifully furnished. All cabins measure 13 square metres and have en-suite facilities. There is a large window, individually controlled air conditioning, satellite TV, radio, safety deposit box and a hairdryer.
